Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on May 4, 2017 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon Crosby. The show titled “Synesthesia” which means to see sound in color, is an exploration of art as a representation of musical expression.
Each vibrant painting in the collection was inspired by a piece of music and captures the feelings emoted by that particular song. Using techniques incorporating watercolor, gradients, and multiple stylings Crosby created colorful emotions that spur the imagination. To allow the viewer to appreciate the symbiosis of the artwork paired with song, QR codes and headphones will be available the evening of the opening allowing participants to experience the musical inspiration of each painting using just their cell phone and QR scanner.
The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of May.
Leon, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone, was born in Toledo Ohio and started his journey in art at a young age. His biggest inspirations come from Japanese art, American Graffiti, and comic book graphics. He has received both formal and informal instruction from the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo and regularly displays and sells his art throughout the Muncie community. In addition to teaching at Cornerstone, Leon has volunteered his time at Sutton Elementary and has several private lesson students. His passion for art and teaching encourages him to inspire his students to make the world a more beautiful place.

The Fickle Peach will feature an exhibition by Lohren Deeg titled "Urban Plein Air: Urban Sketches and Travels.” The exhibition a series of matted digital prints from Deeg’s travel and design sketchbooks collected over the last decade. These sketches and watercolors depict urban and landscape scenes with a variety of ink and watercolor media, and in each case, were drawn or painted in-situ. Deeg explores the ability for field sketches to create a dialogue between the experience of place and design thinking, as well as engage local residents and fellow travelers.
Deeg is an Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, where he has taught beginning design and visual communication courses since 2001. Mr. Deeg collaborates with a small design and planning firm in downtown Muncie, Indiana, and maintains a small independent illustration practice as a member of the American Society of Architectural Illustrators (ASAI). He recently won three awards from ASAI in their 2017 and 2018 competitions.Forever Young Children’s Boutique

Local artist Debra Gindhart will have a reception for her show “I Reconstruct,” featuring aerosol, acrylic, and assemblage wall art. From the artist: “Altered thrift store art allows for my creative palette to redirect the paint. Looking past the obvious, close observation and engagement of the subject is my process. The challenge is to see beyond the distraction of the conspicuous to capture its unique self. Some of my subjects are quite beautiful, others less so. My goal is to inspire those who see my work to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places.”Come meet the artist in her 2nd floor Madjax studio from 5-8pm. The reception will take place in the newly renovated Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in conjunction with August’s First Thursday events.
Taking inspiration from mural art around the world, this collection aims to hit the multiple different styles that can encompass street art from surrealism, graffiti, fantasy art, watercolor and classical styles. These styles and more will be evident in Crosby’s unique show Street Vibe.
Leon Crosby is a local artist, teacher, and street artist. Street Vibe will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of August. MainThe Muncie Arts and Culture Council and PlySpace, an artist-in-residence program based in the Emily Kimbrough Historic District in downtown Muncie, Indiana, are excited to announce the second Summer Term Resident Artist, Kacie Lyn Martinez. Martinez is a participatory fiber artist based in Brooklyn, New York whose work generates contemporary weaving projects which combine therapeutic, meditative practice with traditional weaving methods. While in residence at PlySpace throughout the month of August, Martinez will present a public weaving project,
“the hopes we wear on our backs”, at Canan Commons. The launch of this project will coincide with the First Thursday in August. She will also work directly with the YWCA of Muncie and Muncie OUTreach as community collaborative project partners to explore the weaving process as a catalyst for healing, community cohesion, and home-making.
The participatory public art project titled “the hopes we wear on our backs” explores the process of collectively envisioning Muncie’s future. Held at the west end of Canan Commons through the month of August, “the hopes we wear on our backs” invites Muncie residents to write out their hopes for the city on strips of recycled clothing which will then be woven by Martinez and interested participants into a temporary public artwork installed at the Canan Commons grates. The project is inspired by a lack of public spaces for dialogue as well as negative news cycles which sensationalize trauma and ignore daily beauty in our communities. The project aims to engage with various Muncie communities by using participatory fiber arts to make physical the process of collective dreaming.
Martinez will begin actively working on the public installation on First Thursday, August 2nd, from 5-8 PM. She will be on site to answer questions about the project and her process, and the public is invited to participate by sharing their hopes and dreams for Muncie in person. She will continue the project by facilitating public participation each following Saturday throughout the month of August from 11 AM to 2 PM. Martinez will also be on site Saturday, August 4th from 6-8 PM prior to Downtown Development’s Moonlight Movie screening of “Wonder Woman” at Canan Commons. The public can also participate at any time by adding to the supply of recycled clothing strips and writing their hopes on the strips for Martinez to weave during her next public workday. Full instructions on how to participate will be available at the Canan Commons artwork site and on www.plyspace.org.

In the collection A Nature Walk with God, artist Barbara Kuntz utilizes the act of painting to explore a journey of self-expression. Drawn to nature as a place of rejuvenation, Barbara began each painting using only the memories of places she has been as inspiration. She then allows the painting to evolve into an image of its own making. This experiential process encourages the paint colors, the paint brushes, and a little technique to create work that allows the imperfections in life to exist without an eraser. Barbara has found natural recurring subjects—trees, water, rocks, and sky—within her body of work, creating a sense of solitude and peace.

Debra Gindhart's 2018 exhibit, Girl Power, tells of influencing cultural attitudes and the transformation of stereotypes. There is no singular medium or style that unites feminist artists—they often combine aspects from various movements and media, including conceptual art, body art, and wearable art into works that present a message about women's experiences and the need for gender equality. Gindhart uses aerosol paints, acrylics, and assemblage technique pieces.
Debra Gindhart's Trafficked Art, Real Babes Recycle, Armed & Polite, #Metoo series, and Degradation Dolls will highlight her ArtsWalk 2018 exhibit. She will also have her Green Glam Studio collection of HAUTE COUTURE HANGERS featured in her artist show and reception.
A meet and greet with the artist and light refreshments will be offered. Gindhart’s studio is located on the second floor of MadJax.
CAP Makes Muncie Makes at the Madjax Maker Hub: 514 E. Jackson St.
Through the Motivate Our Minds after-school program, College of Architecture and Planning students are working with 4th- through 8th-grade students as part of the CAP Makes Muncie Makes initiative. The Delaware County Historical Society: 120 E. Washington St.
Will rededicate the once-lost Charles Willard statue at 5 p.m. The limestone statue of the early Muncie mercantilist was placed in a third-story alcove of the Willard Building in 1887. In 1961, the building was torn down, and within a few years, the statue vanished. In 2016, the statue was found at the Chattanooga Choo Choo Hotel, under the assumption it was a Confederate General. After some discussion regarding the statue’s true identity, it was returned to Muncie in September.
A vintage, Hoosier-made, 1866 Gaar Scott Steam Engine will cook the chili for this year’s Soup Crawl. Visitors may also tour the Moore-Youse Museum free of charge. The DCHS has three exhibits on display featuring Delaware County sports and athletic teams, Delaware County in the first World War, and Delaware County pottery.Take a quick walk down east Adams Street to find great music, hot tea, and cider at Grace Episcopal Church on the corner of Adams and Madison. Guitarist and singer, Ric Dwenger, a Muncie native and long-time performer, will be playing and all proceeds will go to A Better Way. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. wit a reception to follow.

· Pottery students from Ball State's School of Art will be doing pottery demonstrations on Walnut Street outside of Made in Muncie Pottery, weather permitting.
· David Owsley Museum of Art at Ball State University: Visit DOMA's table for giveaways and Artreach activities with DOMA docents and staff.
· Live musical and dance performances at Canan Commons Stage
· The Atrium Gallery will feature the work of Muncie native John McNaughton, who taught woodworking, drawing, and sculpture. The gallery will be open until 8 p.m., and McNaughton will present a Gallery Talk at 5 p.m.
