This upcoming Wednesday, we will continue our study session of “Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States” by Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly for Black Study Group. This book discusses the long history of anti-Black and anti-communist/radical repression that has been integral in domestic and foreign US policies and governance, and how racism and racial hierarchy are at the heart of capitalist exploitation and US society.

We will be reading an abridged version of chapter 3, “Genres of Black Radicalism”, and discussing how Radical Blackness embodied the pre-eminent threat of the Black Scare and the Red Scare, exemplified the ultimate threat to the US Capitalist Racist Society, and could be understood through 3 genres: 1) The West Indian, 2) the Outside Agitator, and 3)  Red Black / Black Red

Participants may choose from provided templates or create an original design using a variety of colorful glass. Finished projects will be kiln-fired after class and available for pickup at the front desk the following week. 

All tools, supplies, and safety gear will be provided. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes. Safety glasses will be provided, though participants who wear prescription glasses may use those instead. Preregistration is  preferred; limited walk-in tickets may be available—please call ahead.

Starting this October, Collage with Comrades events will feature different thematic presentations and discussions that focus on anti-fascist resistance and cultural art/community!

For this Collage with Comrades on October 26th, we will be giving a short presentation on STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) and early forms of organized LGBTQ+ resistance. Open questions and discussion will be after the presentation. This is to hopefully center a nice conversation and topic for collage!! The collage activity will be available before, during, and after the presentation.

Participants will learn the Secret Belgian binding method to create a one-of-a-kind hardcover book featuring beautiful exposed stitching along the spine. This unique binding technique combines durability with an eye-catching design, resulting in a handcrafted journal that's both functional and artistic. 

All tools and supplies will be provided. Participants should be comfortable measuring and cutting paper with a craft blade, using an awl to puncture book board and pages, sewing with a needle and thread, and working at the pace of the class to complete their book during the workshop. Self-defense has a long legacy within left radical traditions and should be understood as necessary for collective safety and a portal towards autonomy, self-determination and liberation.

Fifty years after the startling discovery that monarch butterflies spend winters in the forests of Mexico, photographer and National Geographic Explorer Jaime Rojo reveals this winged wonder of the insect world in new ways with never-before-seen visuals. Tag along with conservationists and citizen scientists who are helping this species avoid catastrophic threats, all through Jaime’s beautiful photos and videos.

Jaime Rojo is a photographer and a strong advocate of wilderness conservation and large-landscape connectivity. His goal is to capture images that can ultimately become tools for the creation of new protected areas. He is an International League of Conservation Photographers Senior Fellow, a trustee of the WILD Foundation, and the recipient of honors in competitions such as World Press Photo and Wildlife Photographer of the Year.
