    The Paintings of Casey Parmerlee

Local artist Casey Parmerlee has been very interested in spatial, geometric landscapes and feels that this has guided her most popular work over the past few years. Because of this, Casey has really focused in on what she wants the viewer to take away from her paintings.

She has chosen to refine her color palette and work with non-traditional mediums on canvas, such as charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencils, and using gesso as a medium instead of a ground and sizing as one might typically use it.

Casey states that the overall look and feel of the work in this exhibit is more refined than her previous work of the same subject matter. This body of work tends to conjure feelings of grandness and sophistication with its rigid lines and frame work, but still feels organic and tied to nature. It is this balance of geometry with the organic that she finds interesting.

    Annual Salon Show

Two dozen area artists will hang works for the holidays at Gordy Fine Art and Framing. Opening with a reception on Thursday, December 5th, the exhibit will continue through January 31, 2014 and includes oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings, original prints, pottery, jewelry, photographs and sculpture pieces.

“We’ve added a few artists to our award-winning lineup this year, which helps keep the event fresh and interesting,” offers gallery director, Braydee Euliss. “The works range from traditional oil paintings of landscapes and florals to more modern and abstract pieces and figurative works.” She continues, “We encourage guests to ask questions. Art openings definitely have a learning component, and we all love to talk about art.”

A salon show differs from typical exhibits by allowing pieces to be removed from the show at time of sale. They are replaced by other pieces or the exhibit is rearranged. This allows patrons to consider art for holiday decorating or gift giving, concepts that also support the artists, who appreciate selling their work before year’s end.

Artists in the Salon Show include Kim and Scott Anderson, Sue Beach, Carol Burt, David Dale, Eric Ernstberger, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Charlene George, Brian and Genny Gordy, Corey Hagelberg, David and Sarojini Johnson, Suzanne Lambert, Paul Laseau, Cheryl Anne Lorance, Shonet Martin, Jan McCune, Alan Patrick, John Peterson, Marty Price, Margie Prim, Kyle Rees, Carol Strockwasson and Lynette Waters. A reception for the artists will be held during the monthly First Thursday art event on Thursday, December 5, 2013, from 5 to 8 PM. The artists in attendance will be introduced and a short talk about the show will be given at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

The exhibit may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment.

    Ivy Tech Fisher Building
    345 S High

The staff and students of Ivy Tech’s School of Education are excited to announce that we will be hosting a “Parent’s Night Out” at the Fisher Building from 5:30 to 8:00pm on December 5th. We have an exciting “Winter Wonderland” themed night planned for children whose parents are attending First Thursday events. This event was created because we have a genuine concern for the availability of proper childcare during the First Thursday events. We also understand that many parents in the surrounding area could benefit from a fun night out, all while supporting the community.

Safe activities and a snack will be provided for children while their parents enjoy Muncie’s First Thursday festivities. Registration is open to the first 75 children ages 4-12. Please contact Erin Donovan at edonovan2@ivytech.edu for registration forms or for more information about the event. Thank you for considering the safety of the children in our community.

The Work of Heather Haviland and Melissa Cummings

Heather Haviland has a BFA with an emphasis on photography from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. With her love for graphic design and painting, she incorporates these elements into her artwork. Her inspiration comes from an interest in melding folklore and mythology with fantasy and surreal portraiture. Her background as a floral designer has also influenced the meaning, structure, and vibrant colors seen in her work. This quote from Joseph Campbell best describes what Heather strives to capture in her photographs, “I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.” Her past work has been described as “fantastical & imaginative” challenging the viewer to explore content reminiscent of fairy stories from a darker age.

A self-taught artist,  Melissa Cummings has been the recipient of several honors including winning two scholastic art awards from the State of Indiana.   “People have been my most inspiring subject matter.  The eyes are my greatest emphasis when I am working on a portrait painting.”  Sought after for her portraits Melissa is re-emerging with a new love for surrealistic abstracts in oil.  “This change in genre is allowing me to make creations based from my own emotions.  It is raw energy.”  Her work is eclectic and she enjoys using a variety of mediums and styles.

Select works will be available for purchase.

Magic City Music Men will perform at 6:30pm and 7:15pm on First Thursday.

    Some Otherness and a Dog

Paul Grant will be the featured artist for the month of February at the Artist Within. His exhibit, "Some Otherness and a Dog”, will feature his collage work . This long time Muncie resident began making collages a decade ago as a way to sketch images that were beyond his ability to draw.  Paul explains that over the years, his use of collage has developed into a language all its own.  He feels that it allows him a full range of creative freedom, whether he is working with images or text.

February 13th, from 5-8pm will be the “meet the artist opening reception”. There will be light refreshments and live music featuring Gregg Pyle. The opening is free and open to the public.

Annual BSU Print Show, “New Edition”

Prints are hot, and the wintertime Annual Print Exhibit at Gordy Fine Art & Framing will feature woodcut prints and etchings by two Ball State University printmaking professors. David and Sarojini Johnson are known both for their own signature styles and for the number of students following their example as professionals in the field. With more than fifty years of combined teaching, the duo continues to hone their artistic skills. “The woodcuts, etchings and artist’s books in this show represent some of their best work,” notes Brian Gordy, gallery owner.

David’s woodcuts often depict humans or animals – cows, pigs, crows – in large color block

scenes, fair barns, streetscapes or fast food establishments.  Sarojini’s pieces are known for an exotic flavor, where plants and insects, frogs and lilies are poised in colorful, dark, dreamlike garden scenes, decorative ribbons running around edges. In “Frog and Lily,” a blue-green spotted frog competes with orange and red flowers for center stage. David’s “Topknots and Polka Dots” depicts a seated woman who appears to be relaxing in a corner of the printmaking room at Ball State University – home office for the Johnson duo.

The two artists engage different methods to arrive at their compositions. Sarojini employs intaglio, mastering the process in tight, rich details that are etched out of a metal plate. The plate is then inked and run through a press to create a single print at a time. David’s relief prints, cut by hand, often include color blocks of street scenes or observed moments of contemporary life. His artistic method of choice is relief printing, where wood or linoleum is carved away, leaving desired areas that then receive ink and are printed onto special papers. Each color requires either a different carved block or the same block, cut out a bit more after each color application.

In addition to the framed prints for this annual exhibit, hand-printed books will also be shown. Folding outward, the print books resemble a sculptural work of art that might be displayed open, on table top or mantle.

The opening reception for “New Edition” will be held Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the artists will be introduced at 6:15 PM for a short talk, and to answer questions about the work. The exhibit

will continue through February 28, 2014, and may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. is located at 224 E. Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre.  For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit http://www.gordyframing.com

    Randy Salway: Early Portraits

Randy Salway was born in Fort Wayne and studied printmaking at Ball State University. He has exhibited work locally, regionally, and nationally in solo, group, and juried exhibitions. He has spent the past fourteen years installing the works of other artists as an exhibition preparator at the Indianapolis Museum of Art and the David Owsley Museum of Art. The early portraits in this exhibition are the first of his work to be on view in Muncie in nearly a decade and are meant to reintroduce the artist to the community. His recent work is scheduled to be on view later this year.

    K-12 Juried Student Art Show

The talents and imagination of more than 100 young artists will be showcased in a countywide exhibit when Gallery 308 opens its 10th annual K-12 Juried Student Art Show next week. The public is invited to stop by and see what our young local artists are doing. There’s a free reception for the show’s opening on March 6, the First Thursday of the month.

The nonprofit community art gallery provides a juried show each year for Delaware County students in grades K through 12. Because it’s a juried show, awards will be presented. The presentation will be at Muncie Civic Theatre, 216 East Main Street at 6:30p.m. The exhibit and refreshments will be offered at the Gallery, located at 308 East Main Street, from 5 to 8 p.m. The artists’ families and friends are welcome.

Students from 16 city and county schools are involved in the show. More than 130 entries were accepted into the juried process. The students’ artwork will be displayed at the Gallery through the end of March.  Dave Franklin, Gallery 308 board president and member of the committee that organized this year’s show, said, “Each year I am amazed at the quality of the work; the sophistication of the artist statement and the craftsmanship is really high. We are especially pleased at the number of entries from the middle and high school student artists.”

In addition to announcing the prize winners at the opening, the Gallery will announce the name of the school that has won the 2013 Y.B. Williams Art Supply Award. The $500 cash award is given to the school whose students earned the most points for their arts involvement. Franklin explained that students earn points for their school by attending art gallery openings, visiting museums and other art venues. “The school with the most points wins the $500 award which is to be used by the school to purchase art supplies,” he said. The name of the winning school will be announced at the opening reception. Delta Middle School was last year’s winner.

Judges for the juried show were Casey Parmerlee, (primary school artists) and Tom Riesing (secondary school artists).

Artwork for this show was framed at framing workshops offered by the Gallery in February.

The exhibit is made possible by major funding from Trim Masters Charitable Foundation. Other sponsors include: Indiana Public Radio; Department of Art, Ball State University; Muncie Civic Theatre (providing space for the awards presentation) and Art Mart.

The gallery's hours are Fridays from 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free. The show continues through March 28.

    Paul Laseau Retrospective

Paul Laseau began painting in watercolor media in 1992 while on a trip to the Greek islands. He was inspired by the delicate, but vibrant colors of the sunbaked white villages that cling to the crests of the island mountains.  He brought to this work observation skills developed through 35 years of experience in freehand sketching and photography of architectural subjects throughout Europe and North America. Architectural images have continued to be the dominant focus of his paintings, based on subsequent trips to the coasts of Greece, Italy, England, New England, and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

"Like many artists, I was drawn to watercolor because the medium supports a fluid, spontaneous approach to painting." He continues, "While my approach to painting involves some forethought or planning, there is a pleasurable flow to the work that would be ruined by extended 'massaging' of a painting.

"For me, the value of painting lies more in the act of painting than in the end result. Typically, I am completely absorbed in the subject of a painting. I continue to be fascinated by the historical response of humans to the forces of nature – land, water, sun – as they define appropriate human habitat. Coastal towns and harbors provide particularly vibrant subjects."

Paul Laseau, AIA, is a Ball State University professor emeritus of architecture with over twenty five years’ experience teaching freehand sketching and design drawing. He is the author of: Graphic Thinking for Architects and Designers; Graphic problem Solving for Architects; Inkline Drawing; Architectural Drawing: Options for Design; The Handbook of Architectural Representation; Freehand Sketching – An Introduction; Watercolor Sketching, and Visual Notes (with Norman Crowe).

Laseau’s paintings and drawings have been exhibited at the University of Wisconsin, University of Arizona in Tucson, Clemson in South Carolina, and Ball State University. He has given workshops, presentations and exhibits on sketching, design drawing and watercolor painting for several universities in the US and Europe.

"Paintings in this exhibit have been selected to represent the variety of my work in watercolor over a two-decade span. Although most of the work consists of landscapes or cityscapes, the locales of the subjects are varied due to many opportunities traveling and painting in Europe and North America.

"My style of painting may be termed realistic, and has been heavily influenced by Mel Stabin, artist and teacher. His simultaneous approach to painting provided a fitting transition from my thirty-year background in freehand sketching. My preference is to attack a subject head-on and rapidly, hoping for an inspired response."

The artist will give a short talk about his work, and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 on opening night, Thursday, March 6, 2014.  His exhibition will hang through Saturday, March 1st, and may be viewed at Gordy’s during normal business hours: Monday – Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturdays, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 E Main Street in downtown Muncie. For more information visit http://www.gordyframing.com, or call the gallery at (765) 284-8422.

From the Stage to the Wall

Rose Court will be presenting "From the Stage to the Wall", featuring three local artists who are also well-known local actors.  For each, their love of the theater or classic films has influenced their artwork in some way:

Tom Cherry, who is well known for his acting roles in local community theatre for the last ten years, is also a cartoonist. When he's not acting, he's 'tooning.  He also writes scripts for "Tom Cherry's Old Time Radio Show", a monthly radio show in Farmland, Indiana and co-created the musical "Swann Song" with Jerry & Judy Cole. Tom will be featuring his cartoon artwork in pen and ink.

Wendy Carpenter has also performed in stage productions in various venues around East Central Indiana.  Wendy has had a life-long interest in painting in part due to her artistic muse -  Bob Ross.  She has brought her love of the stage to her subjects and will be featuring her works in acrylics.

Sean Orlosky, having just wrapped up his role in Spamalot, has performed in many stage productions. In his spare time, he is also a freelance painter & classic film fan.  He combines those two loves into a collection of portraits featuring stars from the golden age of Hollywood.

Entertainment will be provided by Gary Andry of String Theory Music Lessons.

As an artist, Bowen is drawn to things that are familiar, and relevant to everyday life. The series being portrayed is titled, A Quick Fix: A photographer's experience in a fast food society. She uses photography to record her ideas and experiences with domesticity. Bowen enjoys being able to create imagery that documents and comments on every day household situations.

Alea Bowling is a senior at Ball State University. She will be graduating in May with a Bachelor of Arts, Emphasis in Photography. Her first major series is a work in progress titled Love in the Making. This project is the culmination of her studies at Ball State, the final requirement for her degree and honors college designation.

Prior to beginning her senior thesis, Alea has also done commission work for several clients, including the Ball State Choral Department, St. Francis Catholic Church in Muncie, Indiana and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Indianapolis as well as individuals.

The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the building. It will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

    Case Studies

Braydee Euliss has worked on every side of the world of art: student artist, artist, museum preparatory intern, gallery manager, patron, picture framer. A Muncie native, Euliss earned a BFA in Sculpture from Ball State University with a semester at Westminster College in London, England. She has also earned the title of “master framer,” according to her employer, Brian Gordy. Not only does she design and complete framing packages, but Euliss works on gilding projects, bringing old and antique frames back to their former golden glory. And, for the month of April, the talented artist will also be exhibiting in the Gordy gallery.

Case Studies is an exploratory and provocative exhibit that investigates institutional methods of 3-dimensional display. The pedestal, the vitrine, and various incarnations of both have been designed to unobtrusively showcase other objects. Case Studies asks the viewer to acknowledge the contextual framework of display and reconsider its furniture as a medium that filters our perception of what is contained within.

Conceptual and provocative, the exhibit re-focuses the viewer’s mind to the boxes, structures – furniture – that typically serve as silent support for art and objects. A question is being asked, “How does the framework of display filter our perception of what is contained within?”

Euliss has participated in numerous solo and group exhibits, including Select Fair in Miami, FL, Contexture at the Marshall J. Gardner Center for the Arts in Miller, IN, 23rd Minnetrista Annual, 73rd , 74th & 75th Annual Student Art Shows (BSU), Reclaiming Show, Atrium Gallery (BSU), and the Whitewater Valley Annual at IU East, Richmond, IN and several group shows, including Monkey Thunder, RE Monkey Thunder, Bodega at the Murphy Arts Building, Indianapolis, IN, and Resurfaced at Savage’s Ale House, Muncie.  The artist was selected for the Art Faculty Award for Outstanding Senior Art Student at BSU in 2010. Other awards include the Muncie Art Students League Annual BSU Student Art Award in 2009 and the Lucia Mysch Scholarship Award in 2009.

The opening reception for “Case Studies” will be held Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be introduced at 6:15 PM for a short talk, and to answer questions about her work. The exhibit will continue through April 30, 2014, and may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. is located at 224 E. Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre.  For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit http://www.gordyframing.com.

Featured artist Doug Smith explains, "I've worked as a freelance commercial artist for the past forty-some years.  I've been commissioned by everyone from Disney to American Greetings, Western Publishing to Mayflower Movers, and many lesser known entities.  As a result, I simply don't own a lot of my original work.

"Throughout the years, I've had the opportunity to do a few drawings and paintings for my own amusement, however, much of these works have been sold or given to family members or close friends.  These days, I do tend to hoard what few pieces I do."

Also at Valhalla, Loren Foley will have a selection of his taxidermy projects in an exhibition titled "Transmutation". Foley describes the collection as "An exploration of Taxidermy and the Reclamation of the Discarded."

    The Artist Within
    313 S Walnut

Downstairs - Then, Now, and POW!
The Artist Within will feature the sculptural assemblages of Angie Hedman. Hedman received her BS in Art Education and a BFA in Metalsmithing from BSU in 1998. A few years later she went back and to earn an MA in Metalsmithing from BSU in 2006. Since 1999, Angie has taught Art at Lincoln Middle/High School in Cambridge City, IN. She teaches grades 6-8 general art, and grades 9-12 three-dimensional art. This talented young artist resides in Muncie with her husband and two children. They own Phoenix Design, a small screen-printing business in Muncie.

Hedman says that the work in “Then, Now and POW!” is a collection of past and present experiences and interests.  Each piece tells a story.  Some of the pieces in this collection are about secrets, lies, truth, ex-boyfriends, failure and success.

This particular collection of work was also influenced by Angie’s love of Pop Art, comic books, toys and board games.  She often pairs contrasting objects together.  The artist feels that something magical happens when objects from different genres, decades, textures, and materials merge and "make sense".  She likes to collect small and unusual objects that she often uses in her work. Vintage photographs, copper wire, screws, bolts, text, and paint also make their way in to most of her work.  The work in this collection can be divided into two categories: Sculptural Assemblage Boxes, and Gameboard Purses.  The two are quite different, but still complement each other.  Overlapping themes occur in both. Make plans to stop by for light refreshments and an opportunity to meet the artist.

Upstairs - What’s in Your Garden?
Spring has finally Sprung! In celebration of the much awaited arrival of Spring, the Artist Within is hosting a “POP-UP” Community Art Exhibit in their upper level gallery.  Local artists of all ages and skill levels have been invited to exhibit their 2-Dimensional answer to “What’s in Your Garden?” This non-juried exhibit will be on display June 5-28.  Most work is for sale and the participating artists are encouraged to be on hand for the First Thursday festivities from 5-8pm on Thursday June 5th. Please make plans to come support all who have been generous enough to share their artwork.

    Students Endeavors

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 5,  2014, for an opening reception and art show featuring two Cornerstone student artists, Tambra White and Wendy Carpenter. Their combined show will feature works of acrylic on canvas, landscapes, odes to nature, and watercolor pieces. The opening reception will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. The gallery will be on display throughout the month of June.

Wendy Carpenter lives cozily in Yorktown with her husband of almost 23 years, two of her three children, and spoiled Shih-Tzu mix, Jax. Along with her art work, she is also enjoys the spotlight, acting in many of the district’s local theatres.

Carpenter learned her artistic style from her great-grandfather and remembers their time painting landscapes together fondly. Most of her works are comprised of acrylic on canvas, but she also enjoys dabbling in watercolors.

Tambra White began her career in special education, rather than art. After teaching for over a decade, she transitioned to become a stay at home mom for her two children and husband of 17 years.

White first discovered her talent during a class at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. At first White only mirrored her instructor’s work, but eventually created her own style and branched out to a variety of different media and content, her favorite being trees.

The Art Gallery is located on the 2nd floor of the building. It will continue to exhibit and promote the artwork of Cornerstone students and instructors, local high school and college students, as well as local and regional artists.

Our artist is Ron Bell for June. Artist statement: "My work is somewhat traditional in general but I try to add an interesting twist or point of view.  I like to use reflective surfaces, glass for example, to add interest. I enjoy all mediums, probably say oil on canvas is my favorite. Much of my work is realism in nature."

    Old-Fashioned Pop Painter

“An Old-Fashioned Pop Painter” showcasing the talents of New Orleans artist Nancy Witte opens First Thursday at Gallery 308 on June 5. “The exhibition features her favorite themes of hotels, motels, sixties advertising, Coney Island and the sea. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

Witte says, “I have a definite thing for signs. My dad was a commercial artist for International Harvester, the farm & tractor company, which was kind of funny because he was a total city boy. He worked in their sign division and there were sign industry manuals around the house with different letter type sets that just fascinated me. I could look at those for hours.”

Born in Chicago, she had no formal training; however, she was influenced by both her parents who met   at the American Academy of Art while studying commercial illustration. “There were always good art supplies around the house, particularly Prismacolor pencils.”

According to Witte, she works from both her own digital photos & found images and almost everything she paints is in acrylic.  She states, “I have a love/hate relationship with Chicago; it has definitely fueled my art. Plus I was a vagabond when I was young living in Seattle, Key West, New York, and Alaska.

She now lives outside New Orleans in Meraux, Louisiana, on a thin strip of land between the marshes of Lake Borgne & the Mississippi River.  Witte says the light here is fabulous with the sun hitting the water on both sides; it's the best light I've ever painted in...besides Key West.  She added, “A lot the things I have painted are gone, wiped away by Katrina--the Sugar Bowl Motel, the Deep South Motel. I suppose that is natural anywhere, but the sense of change is more marked here.”

Her work has been exhibited at Remembering What Care Forgot: An Exhibition Celebrating New Orleans Culture & Revival at ABC NO RIO New York, the Pilsen Juried Art Fair in Chicago, and the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus Art Show at Big Top Gallery in New Orleans.

The exhibit will be on display through June 27.  The gallery’s hours are Fridays 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free.

    Summer Invitational: New Modes

Twelve contemporary artists have been invited to exhibit for two months at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. Gallery manager Braydee Euliss selected artists to create “a more contemporary collection.” While the artists work in traditional formats – sculpture, photography, printmaking, etc., they tend to be non-traditional in their application or approach. “This show is a response to our public to help keep them abreast of all art trends,” Euliss explains. “Part of our job as a gallery is to keep patrons excited about the art we hang and install.” While a few of the exhibitors have ties to Muncie or the gallery, none of them are “house artists” – those exclusively represented by the Gordy’s.

Three of the exhibitors, however, did work for the Gordy’s while attending Ball State University.  Seven have direct ties to the university, either as art professors or employees of the BSU Art Museum. Tim McMichael is from Indianapolis and Art Hazelwood is a well-known San Francisco artist. McCauley holds an MFA from Columbus College of Art & Design (Ohio), and is now a professor there.

“I looked for work that excites me, that I would want to have on the wall for two months,” offers Euliss about her collection. “While it is hard to lump these artists into one group, I would suggest that they are all using familiar media in non-traditional ways; a formula our patrons will connect with.”

Summer Invitational: New Modes, will open on June 5, 2014, at 5 PM, as part of the First Thursday arts walk. Light refreshments will be served and several of the artists will be in attendance. A short talk about the exhibit will be given at 6:15 PM, with a question/answer session following.

The exhibit will close on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 3 PM.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. For more information, call the gallery at (765)284-8422, or visit www.gordyframing.com.

    The Heorot (21+)
    219 S Walnut

Heorot will feature Riles Kyuubi, a student at Ball State studying printmaking. Kyuubi will be exhibiting a series of figure drawings that explore, not only contour of the body, but for the artist tap in to memories of places and times.

Artist Statement: "I had never liked figure drawing. I never liked the images that I was left with. They never spoke to me or did much of anything. After taking classes and doing it for years I finally found that I enjoyed looking back and remember the subjects. I would think back on their personality or what it was like drawing that day. Figure drawing for me became a process or remembering a place in time a spiritual portrait of someone I didn't know. In this series I was trying to find something ethereal within each piece. I would take an element and obsess over it until I felt that I could remember the moment, the time, and space for a lifetime."

    Rose Court
    125 E Charles
    The White River Ruggers

The group will be displaying their highly creative hand hooked rug creations.  Traditional rug hooking is the technique of pulling loops of fabric strips, usually wool through the mesh of a backing, usually burlap, rug warp, linen or monks cloth, to create a pile.  The hook is much like a crochet hook.  The wool may be new fabric or recycled wool clothing that has been torn apart, washed, dried and cut into strips.  The rug hookers often custom dye their wool in order to create the pallet of colors they use, much like mixing paint for a painting. Patterns will range from traditional to contemporary in a variety of styles and intricacy.

Rose Court is looking for artists for the following months: July, September, November, and December. Any artists who would like the opportunity to exhibit at Rose Court during First Thursday are encouraged to email loisgreens3@gmail.com.  We can accommodate most mediums (sculpture artists would need to provide their own tables/pedestals).

    The Artist Within
    313 S Walnut

July’s featured artist at The Artist Within is Anne Maddox.  “Into the Woods” is an exhibit of her watercolors that opens with First Thursday July 3rd from 5-8pm and remains through July 26th.

Anne was born in London, England, but raised in the rural farming community of Kent; a beautiful countryside the English have crowned their ‘Garden of England’. Being reared in such a rich and beautiful environment, it is easy to understand why she is inspired to create such realistic paintings of nature.

The fine details of Ms. Maddox’s creations begin with meticulous drawings and are concluded with the perfect blend of colors that create a ‘realism’ that touches people’s hearts. The underlying theme of all of Anne’s paintings is her spiritual acceptance and honest reflection of true nature. “If there is a flaw in the subject I am portraying, I leave it in. Nature is so beautiful it need not be embellished upon. Inherently, everything in nature is imperfect. We should appreciate the eclectic entity and regard it as perfection in itself”, states Ms. Maddox. With each unique painting, Anne relays her acceptance of reality without tainting the inherent beauty of her own perspective. This philosophy gives each of her creations a living aura that softly whispers; cherish all life for it is truly beautiful.

We hope you will make plans to meet Anne Maddox on First Thursday and enjoy light refreshments and live music by Ole Bohn.

    Gordy Gallery Celebrates 25 Years

When Genny Gordy walked into the downtown art supply store in 1989, she was looking for a new sketchbook. The store owner, interested in retiring, suggested Gordy might want to buy the whole store. A few weeks later, Genny and Brian Gordy were the new proprietors of Muncie’s only art supply shop, which included picture framing services. The Gordy’s were attracted to the idea of working together, as that is how they first met as BSU art students in the 1970’s. Placed into the same working team in an art education class, the two were engaged by the end of the term. They worked in various art fields – education, interior design, art center director – before landing the “family business,” originally called, “Art Mart.” College friend, Karen Fisher, joined them later, eventually purchasing the art supply portion of the business and making camp in the “Village” area, just east of the Ball State campus.

The Gordy’s ramped up the framing portion of their shop to include antique frame restoration services and historic frame replication. Serious collectors, art museums and artists began to place orders that Brian and Ben Gordy would fill, using centuries-old carving and gilding techniques. Through these efforts and others, the two men were given the distinction of “Indiana Artisan;” the only two awarded for framing in the state. Brian was also honored for his watercolor paintings, including his turtle series.

Meanwhile, Genny Gordy was talking with artists, offering services to promote and stimulate sales of paintings, hand-pulled prints, pottery and jewelry created in the region. Today, over two dozen artists call Gordy Fine Art & Framing their home gallery. Monthly First Thursday events are the standard, and sales still bring a thrill. Says Brian, “We couldn’t have dreamed, all those years ago in college, that one day we’d be in a position to surround ourselves with art and artists, while enjoying the fine craft of picture framing, right in downtown Muncie. So many events and so many people helped put Muncie on the map as an arts destination. Without that foundation, how would we have ever made it to twenty five years in our dream jobs?”

The Gordy’s, and gallery manager, Braydee Euliss, invite artists and patrons to join them on Thursday, July 3, 2014, from 5 to 8 PM for anniversary cake, refreshments and door prizes while viewing the current exhibit, “Summer Invitational: New Modes.”  A short talk will be given at 6:15 PM. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located downtown at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. A Retrospective Look at a Muncie Legend, the Artwork of Bette Graham

In addition to the easily recognized block prints, work in water color and pen and ink will be on display in a salon style format "like it, buy it, take it".  We will welcome back the BSU Ceramics Department and students with our potters wheels and throwing demonstration in the Old National Trust/YART parking lot. "Meat Tray Prints" is an activity for children and will be in the YART activities area. For many years, Bette Graham introduced Girl Scouts and young children to printmaking through this technique at Camp Munsee.  BSU Art Education majors will help continue this at the printmaking booth.  This will be a free activity.

    Such a Good Sport

An exhibit featuring award-winning photographer Pamela de Marris opens at Gallery 308 on October 2.  “Such a ‘Good Sport” is a collection of fine art photography of the artist’s shared life experiences with her husband James Meadows spanning thirty years. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

De Marris explains her exhibit, “The pieces hanging on these walls describe his influence on my life, which has been more than any other person I have known. These images visually describe my changing interpretations and emotional views of the different periods we have gone through with our children and each other.   Depicting Jim during the early years was basically documentation.  As our relationship and children grew, I began to express feelings toward him abstractly.  The most recent photographs of Jim are a combination of reality and personal concerns.    Images were selected from past series, providing a chronological portrayal of interactions with family and friends.”

De Marris began taking photos when she was nine years old. She won a Brownie camera by signing up 12 new subscribers along her paper route in rural Michigan for the Niles Daily Star. "I didn't have the greatest childhood, so I used the camera to document the things I was questioning--my siblings, my parents, whatever," she says. "It allowed me to control the moment I captured."

Like 19th-century photographers, De Marris favors long exposure times. Her lighting is simple, her images lushly saturated. The colors look more like they came from an oil palette than photographic dyes. De Marris makes life-size prints, laminates them with an ultraviolet protector, and frames them herself with elegant black molding.

De Marris stated, “The importance of this exhibition lies in the fact that Jim has allowed himself to be transferred outside his around the clock physician’s duties into a personal pictorial diary about his life.  This body of work shares my intense feelings regarding him, which range from happiness to anguish.  The various environments, lighting styles and costumes employed to capture Jim on film reflect my concerns regarding our relationship.”

According to the photographer, while computer generated images are commonplace today, these pieces have been printed from unaltered negatives.  The only slight exception is that, in some images, original negatives were spliced together.  The photographs honestly represent James Meadows.

De Marris earned her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, IL.  She also did graduate work in photography, video, film and digital at the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI. Her work has been exhibited in the United States and abroad including New York, Chicago, Boston, France, Belgium, and Italy   winning numerous awards and recognitions. De Marris was a faculty member at Ball State University in the Fine Art Department from 1991-2011. She has also served as a visiting artist at the Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin, Colombia and at the American Museum, Giverny, France.

Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly “First Thursday” exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 ArtsWalk exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com. The gallery is open Fridays from 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free. The show continues through October 24.

    Scabrous Sciaphobia

Something frightening is brewing in the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing. An exhibit titled, “Scabrous Sciaphobia,” will hang for the month of October and it may just give some patrons the shivers. “Scabrous,” can mean, “having a rough surface,” or, “full of difficulties.” “Sciaphobia” is a fear of shadows. Together, these words create a perfect expression for the haunting month in a century-old building in downtown Muncie.

The artist Lynette Whitesell says about her work, “Scabrous Sciaphobia is defined to me as a fear of shadows that is full of difficulties. Interpreted differently, this body of work confronts life issues, fears, relationships and struggles that haunt us in our lives and how we hide from those struggles.

“I enjoy pushing our classically-conditioned society to peer at the difference between happy and sad, dark and light, etc. I am utilizing heavy impasto with strong hues juxtaposed with photos and ephemera from long ago. I relate our lives and years of experience with multiple layers on the panel. These mixed media pieces resemble encaustic work with techniques that include different textures, images, transfers, text and new to my work: stitching.”

Whitesell works in mixed media, using heavy pigments and strong hues juxtaposed with photos from long ago. One piece, titled, “The Culmination of Amy,” shows a young couple, embraced, perhaps in gardening or work clothes. They are surrounded by a collage of brightly colored papers, hand-stitched on one side, with illegible writing across the scene. Is it a postcard? The couple looks down at the ground in front of them. Are they planting something, or burying something? What difficulties or shadows are we being shown?

Born and raised in Hartford City, Indiana, Lyn is a fine arts graduate of Ball State University. She has worked in East Central Indiana for sixteen years as a graphic designer, illustrator, and creative director and has won numerous awards for her graphic design work. She has also taught at the collegiate level, conducted arts workshops, participated in the Governor’s Arts Awards, and serves on the board of Arts Place in Portland, Indiana. The recipient of two Indiana Arts Commission Artist Grants, Lyn has exhibited her work in art shows and galleries, and has work in numerous public and private collections.

The artist will speak briefly about her work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults. Gordy Fine Art & Framing is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. This show is an exploration of some of the most fascinating fairy tales and stories from our childhoods and features the art of Gabbi Rose Cunningham.

With selections from tales both famous and obscure, the show features a series of paintings which depict Hans Christian Anderson’s tale The Red Shoes, as well as standalone paintings from such worlds as Alice in Wonderland, Coraline, Goblin Market, and other tales. The artist’s fascination with the worlds and characters created in such stories has combined with her unique, grunge like painting style to create a show which delves into the fear, wonder, imagination, and dreamlike nature of fairy tales themselves.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display throughout the month of November. On Water…

Brian Gordy understands water in a way few people do. Not only does he paint in water colors, but he often paints scenes of Indiana rivers, ponds and lakes. Originally, the artist visited the White River near his home in the Minnetrista neighborhood to check out the turtle populations there. Having heard stories of industrial pollution from decades ago, Gordy wondered how the turtles had survived, especially since they winter over in the deep mud bottom. That is also where any toxins would have also settled, he had learned. Fortunately for the turtles, the artist found no sign that these issues had affected their health or population. On that first day, Gordy made a few sketches, took some photos, and began a ten-year focus on the domed creatures in their natural habitat.

The artist will exhibit new paintings alongside a few favorites during the month of November at Gordy Fine Art & Framing, a gallery he owns with wife, Genny. “The common element of my recent series of paintings is the element of water,” Gordy explains. “Water is what I paint with – watercolors – and water is usually the subject I paint. What’s different about this new work is my experimentation with brilliant colors.” Not only has his palette expanded, but as the artist continues, “I’m combining the brighter colors to create neutrals that are “juiced up, more alive.”  The mixing of colors took place directly on the paintings, instead of in the tidy jars the artist typically creates for each new painting. The outcome has also changed.  “In these new pieces, turtles are becoming invisible in the strong reflections of the colorful water, which, of course, is really the colorful sky, being reflected by the river.”

The subject matter is the rivers’ view of it all.  The roots serve as mystery; beautiful, but a little unsettling. “You can’t really see what’s under there, and you wouldn’t want to reach in,” the artist notes. One composition, titled, “At the Foot of the Cottonwood,” focuses on the gnarly, protective roots of a riverside cotton wood tree. A single small boulder is nestled there, begging the question: Which came first, the rock, or the gaping undercut?

The opening reception will be held Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM. The artist will speak briefly about his work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults.

    PARK(ing) Day

Landscape Architecture professors Joe Blalock and Simon Bussiere’s graduate Landscape Architecture design studio at Ball State's College of Architecture and Planning will be presenting the next chapter of the Tactical Urbanism Handbook. Along with the entire Department of Landscape Architecture at BSU, the studio temporarily transformed a stretch of Walnut Street in downtown Muncie on PARK(ing) day 2014 through a series of small parks that fit into on-street parking spaces - calling into question the changing role of personal transportation in the public realm. The graduate students are currently designing a series of "pop-up” urban solutions to bring communities together and improve conditions on the ground through clever examples of temporary landscape architecture.

Also on display will be a collection of art work by Muncie Central High School students; art teachers Margery Frank, Britt Husman, and Helen Zacek.

Debra specializes in custom frames and matting. Her work puts the finishing touch on art.  She is the founder and owner of Creative Framing, which is currently celebrating its 25th anniversary serving the East Central Indiana community. She is a dedicated member and contributor to area non-profits including Women in Business Unlimited, First Choice for Women, and Commonway Church.

    Jan Wright
Creativity has always been a big part of Jan's life. She started out as a traditional artist when she was young. For most of her adult years she has been a photographer, winning awards at State Fairs and other exhibits and shows. Many of Jan's photographs reflect her love of travel, including Europe and Britain. Two of her main interests have always been capturing architecture and the land/cityscape in unusual ways. Jan's favorite images give the viewer a different take on familiar scenes. The fiber and woven arts also fascinate her as well. Currently, she has been recycling fibers and fabrics into new creative pieces. This exhibit combines both traditional as well as creative pieces in these media.

    Andrew Koeling
Andrew Koeling is a graduate of Ball State University. Although a scientist by education, Andrew turned his eye to creation in order to allow his mind to wander and play. Science is constrained in certain ways as it attempts to deconvolute the world into small, easy to digest chunks and makes steps to deconstruct the world around us to make difficult concepts more palatable... but Andrew felt it necessary to give himself another outlet in order to express a side of himself that he felt was being lost in the grind of the ever common 9-5. Science teaches us how to understand the world around us, but art allows us to experience it. Merely learning to know how something occurs doesn't give it meaning, and Andrew elects to try to give the beauty he sees around him greater purpose.

Most of Andrew's work is abstract, and uses a variety of mixed mediums that are atypical in two dimensional art. Using his knowledge of chemistry and biology, he attempts to use different materials than just canvas and acrylics, and instead examines the viscosity of fluids, the way certain polymers might interact with one another, and for ways to use his background to further his art. His inspirations range from the mundane to the monumental, from the biological world to that of the imagination.

Nearly all of his works have a poem that Andrew wrote in order to act as a point of inspiration to the piece, which can be read whenever his pieces are viewed in person (or by inquiry).

    The Artist Within
    313 S Walnut

The Artist Within will exhibit a retrospective look at the artwork of former BSU Art professor Bob Lundy. Mr. Lundy taught photography and graphic design during the late sixties.  Former student of Lundy and owner of the Artist Within, Bob Hartley, has fond memories of his class. “Attention to detail and a commitment to fine craftsmanship” are two of the qualities Hartley recalls being stressed by the young professor and always visible in Lundy’s artwork.

After a career that included teaching at Earhlam College, University of Akron and Eastern Kentucky, as well as being a tech-rep for Nikon Camera, Mr. Lundy retired to Florida to pursue his passion of underwater photography and whimsical wood carving. His love of the water led him to earn the Coast Guard designation of “Captain” in 1984 and hence began signing his wood carvings “Captain Bob”. Bob Lundy lives in Muncie with his daughter Starr Manning.

“Soul Sauce…a look at the work of Bob Lundy” will be the featured show throughout February at the Artist Within.  An opening reception will be First Thursday February 5th from 5-8pm.

Please make plans to see this exhibit that showcase a broad range of mediums and many of his whimsical wood carvings.

    Pop Art Presidents

“Pop Art Presidents” showcasing the talents of artist Melissa Adams opens at Gallery 308 on February 5. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held First Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

The February exhibition is retrospective series of portraits of all 43 U.S. presidents painted in red, white and blue.    Artist Melissa Adams states, “I had this idea to paint the presidents in red white and blue. I didn't know if it had been done before, so I checked on google. I could not find anything quite like what I had in mind.”

Her exhibition was inspired by two things she loves, “I love portrait painting. I like painting with a limited palette. It is amazing what you can do with just a few colors. I love history.”   She added “The exhibition is intended to open a dialogue about our history. This is my attempt to make it current, to make it real in this day. History is so very important. Our presidents have led very colorful lives.”

Adams began painting at an early age, she says I am not sure why I stopped, but I did. Then about three years ago she started painting in earnest. Her preferred medium is acrylics, but she also paints in oils, watercolors and even sometimes coffee, whatever she can get her hands on.

Before she began painting the series, Adams researched each president as extensively as she could, reading about their families, their wives and children. She said, “It helped me to paint them by knowing who they were outside of their political party. After 43, I don't know that I can recall all the details, but it was so interesting. Some everyone will recognize others I didn't even know by their portrait before I started this series. I love that I have learned so much and my hope that this series helps others to do the same.”  History buffs will also appreciate that Adams is also including a quote from each president under their portrait.

“Pop Art Presidents” exhibit continues through February 27. The gallery is open Fridays from 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free.  Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly “First Thursday” exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com.

Muncie Makes Charrette // Redesign the Neighborhood
After inspiration from both Urban Planning and Architecture professors, sophomores Megan Clevenger and Samantha Wiser teamed up to plan an interdisciplinary charrette. The focus of the charrette was in the Maker's District, south of downtown, along Wisor street. The duo advertised within Ball State's College of Architecture and Planning for teams of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture students. The Martin Luther King Day charrette had a successful turnout of Graduate and Undergraduate students, representing all three majors, combined. The team tackled strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the site while incorporating possible solutions to the underused space.

    Asian Infusion

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on April 2, 2015, for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon and Aidan Crosby. The show entitled “Asian Infusion” is an exploration into art forms originating in traditional East Asian culture infused with a modern perspective.

Leon and Aidan, a father son duo, are excited to share their individual and collaborative efforts for the first time together. The collection includes mixed media paintings featuring modern influences such as graffiti and pop art utilizing unconventional styling.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display throughout the month of April.

Leon, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone, was born in Toledo, Ohio and started his journey in art at a young age. His biggest inspirations come from Japanese art, American Graffiti, and comic book graphics. He has received both formal and informal instruction from the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo and regularly displays and sells his art throughout the Muncie community. In addition to teaching at Cornerstone, Leon has volunteered his time at Sutton Elementary and has several private lesson students.

At 10 years old, Aidan has a passion for art unlike many.  He began showing interest in art at 4 years of age. Aidan suffered from a chronic illness as a child, which is what led him to begin classes in visual arts at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. This was a reprieve for him from ongoing illness and it soon became something he could look forward to. A few years later he showed more interest and got involved with classes at Ball State University. Aidan is quite inspired by many art styles, but is highly attracted to the Japanese animation styles especially those displayed in Pokemon. Aidan likes to create in general, often playing video games that allow him to design his own characters and his own worlds. He is an energetic and imaginative child and it shows when he is playing with other children as well when he creates art.

    SKETCH: The Art of Study

Brian and Genny Gordy met in art class at Ball State University. Years later, they purchased what is now Gordy Fine Art & Framing in downtown Muncie. Braydee Euliss, also a BSU art graduate joined them in 2004. The GFAF team may be small, but their collective passion for building a community of art appreciators couldn't be bigger. Monthly rotating exhibits and artist talks raise awareness and increase the accessibility of various art forms in their gallery. In an effort to pursue this passion more thoroughly, they have designed an entire exhibit around the idea of studying art.

For the month of April, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will focus on the practice and process of creating art. The exhibit, SKETCH: The Art of Study is a group show featuring an array of preparatory work that represents what sketching is and can be for artists who work in both 2 and 3 dimensions with all types of materials. Thirteen participating artists will be introduced at the First Thursday opening reception on April 2, 2015, at 6:15 PM.  The public is encouraged to attend and ask questions about the exhibit and the different methods employed by each to create the various pieces.

Exhibiting artists include Scott Anderson, Hannah Barnes, Josh Cogeshall, Eric Ernstberger, Brian Gordy, David Johnson, Paul Laseau, Alan Patrick, Mary Ann Rahe, Kristen Reeves, Jacinda Russell, Janice Shimizu, and Juli Thorson. While each artist uses sketching techniques, patrons will see both similarities and great differences in the final works of art. A sketching station will be set up for patrons to try their hands at drawing a likeness.  Art teachers will be on hand to encourage and assist participants.

Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual

Drawing and paintings, step aside. Sculpture will take over the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing for the month of May, thanks to Ball State University art instructor, Chet Geiselman. The artist describes himself as, “a creative problem solver, a collector and arranger of objects and information, a fabricator of visual forms, and a lifelong student of spiritual and human nature.” Bauhaus design has served as a beacon for his personal creations made of wood, steel and “recontextualized found objects.” Geiselman grew up in a small German farming community in southern Indiana. His grandfather was a blacksmith and his father and uncle were welders. Chet learned to weld and build things at a very young age, and eventually earned an MFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Guests to the January Salon Show at Gordy’s may recall a pair of framed wood sculptures by Geiselman. Neatly contained in deep white wood cases, undulating wood forms recall smooth-skinned knobby trees, or perhaps, sand dunes held in time. Each of Geiselman’s pieces suggests a formal relationship to the space it inhabits and alludes to the potential functionality of the objects that compose it. The full title of this exhibit is, “Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual.”

The artist will speak briefly about his work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM during the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults. Pop Art Presidents

The show entitled “Pop Art Presidents” is a collection of paintings by Missy Adams honoring the lives and history of the 43 presidents of the United States.

Missy Adams is a local artist who took her love of portrait painting and history to create a series of paintings celebrating the colorful personalities and interesting lives led by the nation’s presidents. The show was painted with the limited color palette of red, white, and blue and utilizes shading and layering to create depth representing each president’s own personality. Each painting features a corresponding quote from that president displayed under their portrait.

Adams describes painting as her passion, love, therapy, and her nightmare at times. She started painting at a young age and has been primarily self-taught. She has experimented with watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, and even coffee to paint on glass, cardboard, canvas, and paper to discover what works best. She describes her style as not realistic per se, attributing her ability to see things differently from others as her inspiration.

    Gallery 308
    308 E Main
    Kali Yuga

Gallery 308 will showcase the talents of abstract artist Hannah Barnes, with an exhibit entitled "Kali Yuga". The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held Thursday, September 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

Barnes said, "My inspiration for the exhibit is a reflection on a six week research trip to southern India that I took last summer. In Hindu cosmology, Kali Yuga is the name for the era the world is currently cycling through - the last of four in a cycle. It is marked by conflict, discord, and strife"

According to Barnes, she has been making abstract images since she was four years old.  She added, "A combination of my experience in India and the events of the last year inspired me to create a body of work that emphasizes the accumulation of patterns and structures marked by conflict, discord, transformation and degeneration."

Barnes is an Associate Professor of Painting at Ball State University. She creates work that draws on a familiar vocabulary of abstract forms and tropes to explore the nature of meaning within abstraction. Her work has been exhibited in such places as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Portland, Maine; the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland; Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. Barnes recently completed a residency at the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation in Cranberry Isles, Maine, and she was the recipient of a 2013 Full Fellowship to attend the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.

Ms. Barnes received an MFA in Visual Art from Rutgers State University of New Jersey and a BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art. In 2008 she joined the School of Art at Ball State, where she teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in painting and drawing, as well as undergraduate senior projects and graduate seminars in studio art practice.  Born in Massachusetts, Barnes resides and works in Indianapolis, IN.

According to Barnes, "My work engages the interplay of drawing and painting to explore ideas of structure and fragmentation, surface and depth, perception and illusion, and the indeterminacy of images. My recent work draws on the fragile and indexical qualities of watercolor to foreground touch, trace, mark, process, and impermanence."

Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly "First Thursday" exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com. Interiority: New Paintings by Jessica Summers

Jessica Summers has been selected to exhibit for the month of September at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company. Her oversized drawings and oil paintings command attention, as the viewer feels included in the scene, or just offstage. The artist explains, “I honor the tradition of artists representing the contemporary domestic interior and choose to use my suburban home as the subject and setting for my work.”

Beneath the exceptionally detailed surface, Summers’ pieces “explore modern relationships in which couples cohabitate but for numerous reasons rarely connect.”  Her use of dramatic lighting and sharp camera angles, along with eye contact to acknowledge the audience, brings intimacy into the these private spaces while the artist remains in control of what is revealed or concealed, undoubtedly leading her viewers to seek for more information in details, angles and shadows.

Summers holds a BFA in 2-Dimensional Studies and Art Education from Bowling Green University and an MFA from Bowling Green State University, where she is currently an adjunct professor in Fine Arts. The winner of numerous awards, Summers was invited by Ohio’s First Lady, Karen Kasich, to be the Fall Spotlight Artist at the Ohio Governor’s Residence, where she delivered an artist talk that was later televised. She has also had solo exhibitions at Durham Arts Council in Durham, North Carolina and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia. Jessica has also participated in a number of invitational small group shows at Indiana University South Bend, University of Findlay in Ohio, and Portland ArtsPlace in Portland, Indiana, among others.

Faces of the Cheonggyecheon, Christine Johnson (BLA '16)
During the spring semester of 2015, Christine Johnson (BLA '16) conducted an observational photography study about the Cheonggye Canal in Seoul, South Korea, and the people that came to visit from the middle of winter to spring. From that she has produced maps, drawings, photos, and videos that look deep into the history and culture of the Cheonggyecheon and into the experiences of those who visit. She hopes that through this project she can raise awareness about how important these types of landscapes are to people in the form of social, insightful, and pleasant experiences.

Afterhours Art Reels – Phantom of the Paradise

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, in collaboration with The Fickle Peach, presents After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in June through September. Come enjoy the gallery exhibits from 5-8pm throughout DWNTWN, and join us afterwards at dusk for these great cult and art film classics!

Our final show is: Phantom of the Paradise. Phantom of the Paradise is a 1974 American musical film horror film written and directed by Brian De Palma, and starring Paul Williams, William Finley and Jessica Harper. In the film, a disfigured composer writes his music for a woman he loves so that she will perform his music. However, a record producer betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise. Betrayed, the composer dons a new appearance and exacts revenge on the producer.

The story is a loosely adapted mixture of several classic European works: Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Faust by Goethe/Christopher Marlowe.

Initially, the film was a box office failure and received negative reviews, however it earned praise for its music, receiving Academy Award and a Golden Globe nominations. Over the years, the film has received much more positive reviews and has since become a cult classic.

The Ball State University student short film shown prior to this month's movie is "WHOLE" . Film by the Rieth Brothers. This film was the winning short film for the 2015 BSU Frog Baby Film Festival.

Films are projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles Street at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area. A hot dog food cart and beverages will be available.

This will be the final film of the summer series. Go to our website to see the film trailer.

Life is short, capture it! Born and raised in Delaware County, and a graduate of Ball State University, Lorri Markum has spent most of her life behind a lens. Her professional career began with a love of music and live performance. After landing her first concert photography job photographing Aretha Franklin, and soon after, Sir Elton John, she has spent nearly twenty years photographing the top artists, and legends in music.

Though most of her work is known through her work in the music industry, her true love as a photographer lies in pursuing photojournalism and street photography in black and white. She enjoys capturing moments as they naturally unfold, the common, the forgotten, the subtle, and the bizarre from New York City, to New Orleans.

A collection of Lorri Markum’s photographs will be on display during September 3 from 5–9 p.m. at the Rose Court on East Charles Street. The works are black and white canvas prints of street scenes, and nature, from Indiana to Mississippi, New Orleans to Muscle Shoals. All will be available for purchase.

November First Thursday at Cornerstone Center for the Arts will feature Muncie artist, Christine Abercrombie. Abercrombie’s collection entitled “Origins” is an abstract exploration into color, texture, and design fueled by real life emotions and personal growth. The opening reception will be on Thursday, November 5, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm.

Abercrombie is an abstract painter, wife, mother, and local small business owner that has found profound healing, strength, and happiness through painting. She hopes to inspire others to dream, create, and act on what their soul loves to do.

She describes herself as an "intuitive" painter - producing pieces that do not begin with any particular plan or layout. She has added painting to her daily routine and considers it to be a way of meditation. Abercrombie describes her paintings as a work of passion; they are all about emotion and the importance of imagination and dreams to personal growth and cultivating love and positivity within herself, her family, and the world.

“Origins” will remain on display in the Cornerstone Art Gallery throughout the month of November. For more information about the show call the Department of Education & Communication at 765-281-9503, ext. 23.

Watercolor Invitational:  Smith, Mcleish and Brouwer

Jerry Smith, Jeanne Mcleish and Rena Brouwer, three watercolor artists from across Indiana will be featured during the month of November at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company.  These artists were selected by Brian Gordy, a watercolor artist and owner of GFAF gallery.  Says Gordy, “Aside from the fact that they are all consistent award winners, they are three of my favorite watercolor artists in Indiana.  Each painter’s approach to the medium is distinctive, dynamic and decidedly different from each other’s work.”

Jerry Smith, a Crawfordsville resident, paints expressive, yet vividly detailed rural and city scenes that feature a unique undulating rhythm.  He is a signature member of many prestigious organizations including American Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Indiana and Transparent Watercolor Society of America.

Jeanne Mcleish, a resident of Mooresville, brings her paintings of forest floors, creek-beds and ravines to life with sizzling, yet sophisticated, combinations of colors.  Jeanne is also a signature member of Watercolor Society of Indiana and Transparent Watercolor Society of America.

Rena Brouwer, a resident of Piermont, paints spontaneous, dreamlike expressions of realistic subjects, exploiting the property of fluidity in watercolor. Her process involves facilitating the accidental effects brought on by adding washes onto wet paper, then reacting to those effects.  Rena is a signature member of many organizations, including Transparent Watercolor Society of America, and Watercolor Society of Indiana.

Please join Brian and Genny Gordy for their final First Thursday reception as owners of Gordy fine Art & Framing Company. The reception is from 5:00-8:00 with a brief talk by the artists beginning at 6:00.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Woven Ideal: The Wapahani Series, Lisa Dunaway
The five pieces in this collection were created in honor of the White River, or Wapahani in the Miami language.  The branches that anchor each piece came from Sycamore trees along the White River in Muncie in a public park.  I went to the White River to gather materials for this collection because I wanted a connection to the Wapahani.  I purposely used the personality of the branches to allow for asymmetrical and irregular knot work, to mimic the ebb and flow of the river.

    The Paintings of Jim Faulkner

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will open The Paintings of Jim Faulkner on First Thursday, February 4, 5 – 8 pm.  Included in the show will be more than a dozen watercolor paintings by the artist who will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Faulkner’s dedication, sensitivity, and skill as a painter for more than 50 years has made him one of the most loved and revered artists in this region and statewide. His artistic excellence and contributions to Muncie's cultural vitality were honored last summer during the inaugural Mayor's Arts Awards where Faulkner was recognized with the award for Artist in the Community.  He has been a full time painter since 1977 at his country home that he shares with his wife Eleanor.  They are both great animal lovers and his studio is in a restored barn.

“I am very taken by the constant change taking place in everything,” says Faulkner.  “The new that decays, becoming the old.  In the natural world, both new and old seem to hold my interest…  I paint the meadows, woods, homesteads, towns, and people of the Midwest, trying to find meaning in the stillness of an old abandoned farm, or the quiet of a snow-covered wood, or even the aging of the human face.”

“Weathered buildings and bent trees are central to the images in this exhibition,” says gallery owner Carl Schafer.  “They are evidence of the constant winds and shifting limestone bedrock in our region that have pushed them and allowed them to settle at slightly precarious angles.  Over the course of his career, Faulkner has succeeded in defining East Central Indiana’s wide open landscape.”

At 6:15, Carl and Barbara Schafer will introduce Faulkner to those attending, and tributes that have been gathered from his close friends and colleagues will be read.  Those attending the event will be invited to write their memorable experiences with the artist and things they find impressive about his accomplishments.

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists from East Central Indiana and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art.  The Paintings of Jim Faulkner may also be viewed during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5:30 pm, Saturday, 9 am – 3 pm.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre.  For more information, visit www.gordyframing.com or call 765-284-8422.

    Radicle Traces

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, March 3, 5-8 pm with an opening reception for Radicle Traces, paintings by Kaylee Dalton. The exhibit will feature several new paintings by the artist who will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Appropriate for March, Dalton’s work is a whimsical interpretation of the garden landscape with a focus on “the ever longed for spring season and its perpetual fascination of new growth.” Bulbs, seeds, and blooms, both above and beneath the soil, have all found a home in her most recent work. Exploiting the rare combination of encaustic wax and water media, Dalton clearly embraces strong textural differences, reflective of the various surfaces often found in nature

Dalton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Ball State University in 2008. She was the 2006 recipient of the Watercolor Society of Indiana scholarship. While attending Ball State University, she received five painting awards, including three purchase awards. Dalton studied at the University of Miami, Florida for a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. She has shown in over 25 group exhibits including Art Basel Miami. She is a member of the Northern Indiana Artists and recently received the Carolyn Jagodits Memorial Award at their latest exhibition. Locally, Dalton was awarded third place at the Minnetrista Open Space: Art About the Land juried show in 2015.

At 6:15, the artist will speak briefly about her work. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the artist as well as her unique pairing of artistic media.

“Vibrant Earth” Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on April 7, 2016 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon Crosby. The show titled “Vibrant Earth” explores the softer side of Crosby’s art style featuring themes and scenes found in nature. He has decided to go back to his art roots with this collection. Using painting techniques he learned throughout his college years, while also maintaining his elegant modern edge.

Each painting in the collection represents an aspect of the vibrant colors, emotions, creatures, and forms present on planet Earth. This multi-media collection combines both traditional painting techniques and modern stylings.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of April.

    Muncie Makes Lab

    628 S Walnut

Muncie Makes Lab will host three exhibitions for First Thursday:

“Experimental Watercolor, Carol Burt + East Washington Academy Art Students”: Explorations in watercolor techniques supported by Bell Grant Funding.

“Huggable Architecture: Rachel Dickey with Morganne Walker”: Huggable Architecture is an exhibit produced as part of the Design Innovation Fellowship at Ball State University. It is no mere representation of design research, but rather a demonstration of it. In an effort of design and making, the exhibit interrogates how we might mediate between the quantitative and qualitative aspects of design by drawing on ideas of softness, empathy, warmth, and the body. It takes an opportunistic approach to design research and tries to find the equilibrium between computational control and material volition by bringing together a change of state material with a digitally controlled and automated flexible mold. Securing 1,150 pounds of gypsum cement—one of the most commonly used building materials today—an unconventional approach to its use was derived for freezing geometric variations. The sea of individual soft, dense, and pure casts that result taxonomize the range of curvature achieved through the reusable parametric mold.

“Renderpalooza: Hosted by Ball State’s AIAS Chapter”: Renderpalooza is a collection of student works from the College of Architecture. The exhibit exemplifies a wide range of graphic representations ranging from 3rd year to graduate level work. These representations explore different means and methods to convey architectural visions and ideas. Features work will include: Drake Mulcahy (4th), Kyle Tuttle (4th), Shelby Harris (4th), Logan Richmond (4th), Itzel Munoz (4th), Hannah Liechty (3rd), Michael Deprez (3rd), Elise Hoff (3rd), Jenna Hoch (3rd), Georgia Pogas (3rd), Michael Gasper (3rd) and Kevin Miller (1st year grad).

    Raymond James & Associates

    400 S. Walnut St. (Ste. 100)

“Julie Vance of Buckcreek in Bloom”: We are hosting an event for the April First Thursday (see below) along with the ‘Art in Bloom’ event that will be at the David Owsley Museum of art on May 20th (art inspired flower designs created by the region's top floral designers). Julie Vance of “Buckcreek in Bloom” will be creating a floral interpretation of a displayed art piece.

    Rose Court

    125 E Charles

The Napkin Sketches of Tony Costello”: Rose Court is pleased to exhibit the napkin sketches of Tony Costello during the April Arts Walk. Costello is the Irving Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Ball State University and the principal of C+A Costello + Associates, an award-winning architecture firm he founded in 1976. This exhibit is comprised of 70+ ink sketches on cocktail napkins created during a family cruise on the Rhine-Main-Danube Rivers in 2015. It is the second in a series entitled Personal Postcards. Many of the sketches took less than two minutes to create, some as many as ten. The subjects include bridges, industrial buildings, churches, vineyards, riverfront cityscapes, and river lock sequence images. Taken collectively, Costello feels that this collection of sketches, created with the human eye and hand, captures the evocative essence of travel experiences far better than any camera.

    “Sarah Shaffer: Life in Plastic

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 2, 2016 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Sarah Shaffer. The show titled “Life in Plastic” explores society’s monumental impact through the form of our tiniest role models.Beyond objectification and the weight of the world's expectations, creating this body of work was a very personal journey for Sarah. She created these paintings using one of her daughter's dolls as a model with the color palette of her childhood memory. These pieces embody her own path to define her self-image and the desire to not pass along physical insecurities to future generations.

Each piece is a depiction of a doll, focusing on a portion of the body and recreated on a large scale. This collection of acrylic paintings portrays the objectification and unrealistic expectations placed upon women. We perpetuate these damaging standards in our interactions with others and within ourselves. The titles are inspired by comments made to or about women in judgement of their appearance, their choices, and their actions.

The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of June.

Sarah, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone as well as a commissioned artist, is a native of Indiana, grew up in Fort Wayne with A love of art from an early age. Sarah is a graduate of Ball State University’s School of Art, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in metalsmithing earned in 2007. Her senior show titled "Playtime's Over," explored women's issues by combining Barbie dolls with precious metal to create conceptual jewelry.

Nearly 10 years after Sarah's senior project, she has revisited Barbie and some of the corresponding themes of objectification and unrealistic expectations through the form of painting rather than jewelry. In the near decade that has passed, Sarah has become a mother and wishes to confront these themes for the betterment of the next generation.

For more information about the show, call Cornerstone’s Department of Education & Communication at 766-281-9503, ext. 23.
