  • Jazz Pianist Hiromi 7:30pm to 12:42pm @ Pruis Hall, Ball State University
Cost: $5 to $22 (see below)

Emens Auditorium proudly presents jazz pianist/composer Hiromi this Thursday at Pruis Hall. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available and are just $5 for BSU students. BSU faculty/staff buy one adult in advance for $17, get a second free. Don't miss your opportunity to see the artist the New Yorker calls, "DAZZLING!"

Mentored by giants like Oscar Peterson, Ahmad Jamal and Chick Corea, Hiromi's roots are in jazz but her music explores a world of new ideas by blurring the boundaries of pop, rock, classical, avant-garde and other genres.

Born in Shizuoka, Japan, in 1979, Hiromi discovered jazz when she took up the piano at age six. Within a year, she was a student of the Yamaha School of Music, whose progressive approach to musical training allowed the young student to tap into her emotions while mastering the technical aspects of writing and performing. At age 14, she went to Czechoslovakia and played with the Czech Philharmonic. Three years later, Corea invited her to perform with him. In 1999, Hiromi came to the United States to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Hiromi established her reputation when her 2003 Telarc debut, "Another Mind" - co-produced by Ahmad Jamal - won the Recording Industry Association of Japan's (RIAJ) Jazz Album of the Year Award. Her subsequent releases all won her critical-acclaim and industry recognition.

Part of the personal connection she has established over the years is the result of making music without labels or restrictions. As a matter of principle, she'll continue to follow whatever moves her - be it a place, a person, an idea or whatever else - and leave the definitions to others. "I don't want to put a name on my music," she says. "Other people can put a name on what I do. It's just the union of what I've been listening to and what I've been learning. It has some elements of classical music, it has some rock, it has some jazz, but I don't want to give it a name."

For more information, visit Hiromi's site or check out Hiromi on YouTube.

General Admission tickets: Adult $17 in advance/$22 at the door; $5 youth & BSU students. BSU faculty/staff buy one adult, get a second free.

    Cost: See website for details

A singularly unique ensemble, the Rastrelli Cello Quartet has been thrilling audiences with their renderings of non-traditional programming since 2002. Kira Kraftzoff - founder and artistic director, Kirill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff and Sergio Drabkin formed the ensemble with a mission to perform music "between the genres," and their widely varied programs mix comfortably works by Bach, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky with that of George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and Leroy Anderson. The name of the Quartet is taken from the eighteenth-century architect Bartholomew Rastrelli, who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the home city of three of the four Quartet members. The Rastrelli Quartet currently has five recordings (Rastrelli, Volumes 1-5) on the Solo Musica, TonArt and Manchester labels, as well as a 2008 release with music by Piazzolla entitled "Cello in Buenos-Aires." • East Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra Dessert Concert 7:30pm to 12:42pm @ Cornerstone Center for the Arts

    Contact:Van Nelson                                                                 Tel. 765-748-1851

    Email: vnelson38@att.net

East Central Indiana Chamber Orchestra will hold its first concert of the year at 7:30 p.m. on March 23 at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts. Pie and refreshments will be provided for those who make reservations at the dessert concert in the Colonnade Room of the art center. The evening’s performance will also feature the Youth Symphony Orchestra of East Central Indiana, directed by Dr. Karin Hendriks.

The ECICO has had a dessert concert for the past eight years, said Van Nelson, the group’s director. He explained that it is the group’s version of a pops concert, as they usually play light classical selections as well as music from movies and musicals. Some of the pieces currently being planned for the Saturday concert are Franz Suppe’s “Light Calvary Overture,” “Serenata” by Leroy Anderson, and “Orpheus” by Jacques Offenbach. The ECICO will also perform a selection of pieces composed by John Williams from the famous movie, Schindler’s List.

The YSOECI will also play its own John Williams selection, “Themes from Harry Potter,” a medley of music from the very popular series. The selection was arranged by Paul Cook and adapted for the YSOECI by Ryan Bischoff, a Ball State student. The ECICO and its guest, the YSOECI, will also combine to play a medley of music from the recent movie adaptation of Les Misérables.

The Youth Symphony Orchestra of East Central Indiana was founded in 1964 to provide an outlet for middle school and high school orchestral musicians. A part of the Muncie community for such a long time, the group is currently working on an “immersive learning” project with Ball State students.  Dr. Hendriks explained this partnership is a way to help revitalize the program and ensure it “becomes a functioning, thriving, and growing youth symphony program in Delaware County.”

Dr. Hendriks is an assistant professor of music education at Ball State University. She has taught as a public school orchestra instructor for thirteen years and has won several awards for her skills in teaching. A private cello teacher for over 25 years, Dr. Hendriks was even once recognized by then First Lady Laura Bush in 2003. She has also collaborated in education projects with several international soloists and chamber ensembles.

Leading the ECICO will be Javier Mendoza who was hired as the ECICO’s new conductor just this fall. Mendoza is currently music director and conductor of the Chicago Arts Orchestra and a guest conductor for El Sistema Nacional de Bandas, Orquestras y Coros de Guatemala. Some of his past accomplishments include guest conducting for the Boris Liatoshnisky Chamber Orchestra in the Ukraine during an International Conductors Festival and working as the artistic director for the International Music Festival of the Americas in summer 2009 in Guatemala.

The concert is free and open to the public. Desserts are optional and $8 per person. Reservations for desserts and any inquiries about the evening’s performance may be made by contacting Van Nelson.
