The Artist Within

ArtsWalk 2015 will be First Thursday October 1st from 5-9pm The Artist Within will feature the Muncie Artists Guild. The Guild will be unveiling their mural that depicts a 1907 downtown Muncie scene entitled, “Main Street Looking West”. Twenty-one artists from the Guild participated by each painting an 18”x18”canvas depicting a section of the scene.  Some of the artists used oils while others chose to paint with acrylics. The panels will be assembled to create the large mural.  The mural will remain on display at the Artist Within throughout the month of October, but will then be moved to a permanent location in City Hall as a gift to the city from the Muncie Artists Guild. The members will also be showing several individual works of art.  Please join us for the October 1st reception at the Artists Within featuring music by Bryce Taylor and light refreshments.

In addition to the exhibit, Toren Scott will have his pottery on display out front with Normandy Flowers on the scene filling Toren's pieces with fresh flower arrangements by his wife Audrey.

There will also be a pottery demonstration conducted by the BSU Ceramics Department.

Muncie’s own Jennie Devoe will perform on the Canan Commons Stage at 7 p.m. At the conclusion of her set at 8:30 p.m., we will set in motion a spectacular lighted interactive display. The project was funded by a grant to MDDP by Ball Brothers Foundation and was designed by PROJECTiONE and Ball State’s Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts. The launch of this one-of-a-kind public attraction will be the cornerstone of our celebration of Muncie’s 150th birthday. This special event for all ages includes other surprises as well!  You will not want to miss this Sesquicentennial finale.

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for the First Thursday ArtsWalk on October 1, 2015, for your last chance to see "Pop Art Presidents" by Missy Adams. The show entitled “Pop Art Presidents” is a collection of paintings honoring the lives and history of the 43 presidents of the United States.

Missy Adams is a local artist who took her love of portrait painting and history to create a series of paintings celebrating the colorful personalities and interesting lives led by the nation’s presidents. The show was painted with the limited color palette of red, white, and blue and utilizes shading and layering to create depth representing each president’s own personality. Each painting features a corresponding quote from that president displayed under their portrait.

The artist will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts, 520 E. Main St, Muncie.

Adams describes painting as her passion, love, therapy, and her nightmare at times. She started painting at a young age and has been primarily self-taught. She has experimented with watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, and even coffee to paint on glass, cardboard, canvas, and paper to discover what works best. She describes her style as not realistic per se, attributing her ability to see things differently from others as her inspiration.

Monkey Thunder 5

Monkey Thunder started four years ago as a one-night only, pop-up, art coup of sorts in an effort to address the wants and needs of an under-served faction of our local arts community. With little to no guarantee of staying power, it thrived. After 4 glorious iterations, Monkey Thunder is back, and it's going public!

Organized and curated by Gallery Manager Braydee Euliss, MT5 will be a month-long event with the opening reception coinciding with ArtsWalk, Downtown Muncie's biggest First Thursday of the year on October 1st from 5 - 9 PM.

The artwork featured will be an eclectic selection of both 2D and 3D work from local and regional artists, current faculty and students at Ball State University School of Art, as well as guest artists from across the country.

In addition to the work displayed at GFAF gallery, Monkey Thunder 5 includes video, performance, and other time-based artwork on view in Muncie Civic's Black Box Theatre under the direction of Maura Jasper, visual artist, filmmaker, and Assistant Professor of Intermedia Art at BSU. This 'side-show' is a Monkey Thunder favorite and offers a rare exhibit experience for both the artists and the audience.

Light refreshments will be served, DJ Jannell will provide the music, and the public is invited to attend. This is a family friendly event, but please note, the work on exhibit will be interpretive, experimental, difficult, conceptual, and subversive. Heidi Hale, local artist and longtime resident of Muncie, has chosen ArtsWalk October 1st to welcome the public to her new studio.  HeidiJHale Designs, LLC is a working studio located at 301 S. Walnut in Muncie’s Downtown Arts District.  The studio is located in Suite 102 of the Mitchell Place Building and is a fully functioning jewelry design studio with a retail space that allows customers to purchase pieces of jewelry created in the studio and/or place custom orders.  Heidi is known for her creative designs, unique use of materials and outstanding craftsmanship.  She has been making beautiful jewelry along with teaching others for many years. 

She invites the public to visit her on Thursday October 1st from 10am-9pm to share in the excitement of her Grand Opening.  Regular store hours are 10-5 Monday through Friday, 11-5 on Saturday, and begin Friday October 2nd.

How might concepts and methodologies of “narratology” be integrated within the design and fabrication of an object?  This exhibition investigates the potential for a table to serve as a medium to express a chosen story, using narrative world-making strategies, borrowed from contemporary literary theories. Each designed table tells and teaches a different story by encouraging the message of the narratives to be discovered, interpreted, and experienced by the end user through the detailing, material selections, form, and function of the object.

“Sarah Shaffer: Life in Plastic”

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on June 2, 2016 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Sarah Shaffer. The show titled “Life in Plastic” explores society’s monumental impact through the form of our tiniest role models.Beyond objectification and the weight of the world's expectations, creating this body of work was a very personal journey for Sarah. She created these paintings using one of her daughter's dolls as a model with the color palette of her childhood memory. These pieces embody her own path to define her self-image and the desire to not pass along physical insecurities to future generations.

Each piece is a depiction of a doll, focusing on a portion of the body and recreated on a large scale. This collection of acrylic paintings portrays the objectification and unrealistic expectations placed upon women. We perpetuate these damaging standards in our interactions with others and within ourselves. The titles are inspired by comments made to or about women in judgement of their appearance, their choices, and their actions.

The opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of June.

Sarah, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone as well as a commissioned artist, is a native of Indiana, grew up in Fort Wayne with A love of art from an early age. Sarah is a graduate of Ball State University’s School of Art, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in metalsmithing earned in 2007. Her senior show titled "Playtime's Over," explored women's issues by combining Barbie dolls with precious metal to create conceptual jewelry.

Nearly 10 years after Sarah's senior project, she has revisited Barbie and some of the corresponding themes of objectification and unrealistic expectations through the form of painting rather than jewelry. In the near decade that has passed, Sarah has become a mother and wishes to confront these themes for the betterment of the next generation.

“Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Cornerstone Park”

Cornerstone Center for the Arts and the City of Muncie are excited to announce a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Cornerstone Park on Thursday, June 2 at 5:30 p.m. The ceremony will feature live demonstrations from students and instructors of Cornerstone Center for the Arts and remarks from Mayor Dennis Tyler, Jeff Robinson of Cornerstone, and Ron Spangler of Community Enhancement Projects. At the conclusion of the ceremony, guests are invited to Cornerstone for light refreshments and the opening of the art show “Life in Plastic” in Cornerstone's Art Gallery on the second floor until 7:30pm.

Cornerstone Park sits at 101 S. Madison St. at the former site of Holiday Cleaners. The development of the park was made possible through partnerships with the Ball Brothers Foundation, the Community Foundation of Muncie and Delaware County, the George and Frances Ball Foundation, Community Enhancement Projects, the Zeigler Foundation, the Muncie Sanitary District, the Muncie Redevelopment Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, and Muncie Mayor Dennis Tyler. The park was created as a gateway to Downtown Muncie and will offer new outdoor opportunities for the surrounding businesses and organizations.

Cornerstone Park features lush landscaping and ornamental foliage from Jay-Crew Landscape and is home to the new public art piece titled EXTESS by PROJECTiONE. Cornerstone plans to utilize the new park for upcoming summer classes, workshops, and events.

“Summer Invitational”

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, June 2nd from 5 – 8 pm with an opening reception for the gallery’s third annual Summer Invitational. “CritChat: Unknown Territory”
For the past year, Muncie Makes Lab has been home to CritChat, a free, community meet-up developed and facilitated by artists Holly Lay and Braydee Euliss. This monthly gathering invites local artists of all kinds to participate in conversation about their own work and the work of others. Painters, photographers, sculptors, and makers alike are encouraged to bring completed work, work-in-progress, and even unrealized ideas with the sole intention of sharing. By enabling dialogue, promoting collaboration, and providing critical feedback, the group hopes to build community and support for emerging area artists.

The month of June marks CritChat’s one-year-anniversary. The group will celebrate with an opening reception for CritChat: Unknown Territory at Muncie Makes Lab on First Thursday, June 2nd, 5 – 9 PM. This exhibit explores a variety of media including photography, assemblage, installation, as well as video and sound manipulation performance with a focus on new techniques and subject matter. Featured in the exhibit are artists Spencer Davis, Kara Clark DuQuette, Michael DuQuette, Dave Franklin, Holly Lay, Rochelle Martin, and Jannell Summers.

Artists will be present and guests are encouraged to ask questions throughout the evening. Beginning at 8 PM, the exhibiting artists will introduce themselves and engage attendees in a sample CritChat experience, leading artists and viewers alike through the process of providing informed, critical feedback on select pieces featured in the exhibit. DJ JANNELL will provide music, and light refreshments will be served.

“Exhibiting Excellence”

In celebration of another successful class session at Cornerstone Center for the Arts, the organization will feature artwork from its youth and adult students in the Cornerstone Art Gallery throughout the month of August. This mixed media collection of art will showcase the best visual arts pieces of the session chosen by Cornerstone’s instructors. With selections from both youth and adults with various artistic backgrounds, this show will truly highlight all that Cornerstone’s arts program has to offer.

An opening reception will be held in conjunction with First Thursday on August 4th from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Cornerstone Art Gallery. The reception is free and open to the public and many of the student-artists will be onsite to speak about their artwork.

The show will continue to be on display throughout the month of August to help promote upcoming fall twelve-week classes beginning in September. Information and registration for upcoming classes, workshops, and camps will be available on the evening of the opening reception as well as throughout the month of August.

“Industrial Blues: An Exhibit of Photography by Gunther Cartwright”

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, August 4th from 5-8 pm with an opening reception for Industrial Blues, an exhibit of landscape photography by Gunther Cartwright. The artist will be on hand to engage with viewers throughout the evening and will speak briefly to the audience about his work at 6:15pm. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Cartwright’s landscapes exquisitely capture the details of industry that form the backdrop of life in today’s modern world. About his interest in this subject matter, Cartwright explains, “The power lines, telephone poles, fences and industrial structures are a part of my daily visual experience. They are not in my way. I see them as elements of the landscape. They are there and they make their visual ‘sound.’ I am not interested in the picturesque but rather the formal arrangements of elements and color within the landscape.” His eye for vivid color and graphic compositions often draw unexpected connections among things seen in the everyday landscape, transforming banal and rarely celebrated visual moments into striking works of art.

Cartwright holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the renowned Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Applied Photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology, School of Photographic Arts and Sciences. An active lecturer and exhibitor, Cartwright has presented throughout Europe and the United States. He is a recipient of a Polaroid Corporation Photographer’s Grant and a New York State Council on the Arts Public Service Grant (CAPS). He has exhibited internationally in many one-man and group shows, including at the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., the George Eastman Museum, Rochester, NY, the National Museum of Photography, Bradford, England, The Photographer’s Gallery, London, England, and at Photokina, Köln, Germany.

“CritChat Exhibit: ART via CRAFT”

Muncie Makes Lab will host its third CritChat exhibit of the year for First Thursday, August 4 from 5-9 PM. “CritChat: ART via CRAFT” is a one night only pop-up exhibit that explores craft as an impetus for art making.

The line between art and craft is a blurry one that often looks to intention and function for clarification. Historically, practices such as painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking have been classified as “arts,” while ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and woodwork have been considered “crafts.” The primary distinction between the two has relied on whether the work was made with the intention of being expressive or solely utilitarian. “CritChat: ART via CRAFT” exhibits work that questions this distinction and further blurs the line between them.

Exhibiting artists will be present and guests are encouraged to ask questions throughout the evening. Beginning at 8 PM, the artists will introduce themselves and engage attendees in a sample CritChat experience, leading the audience through the process of providing informed, critical feedback on select pieces featured in the exhibit. DJ JANNELL will provide music, and light refreshments will be served.

Painters, photographers, sculptors, and makers alike are encouraged to bring completed work, work-in-progress, and even unrealized ideas with the sole intention of sharing. By enabling dialogue, promoting collaboration, and providing critical feedback, the group hopes to build community and support for emerging area artists.

On behalf of the thousands of folks impacted by your commitment to our community—thank you for your incredible generosity! You are what made 2020 an unprecedented year. Now we want to celebrate YOU! You are cordially invited to celebrate with United Way during First Thursday on April 1st at 5:30 p.m. for a live concert at Canan Commons Park. Artists include Destiny Donati, Bashville Boys and Cool Beanz. The Guardian Brewing Co. will be on-site as well as food trucks from Payne's Restaurant and Speedy Dogs. To keep each other safe, masks and social distancing will be required following CDC and local health department guidelines.

Opening Reception for Fly: an Art Exhibition by Debra Shidler:
Hosted by Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with DWNTWN Muncie’s First Thursday. In this upcycled exhibit, artist Debra Shidler explores the world of flying creatures and the organic patterns within them. Her show, Fly, will be displayed in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center of the Arts. The opening reception will be held on Thursday, April 1, from 5 - 8 p.m. and will remain on display until Friday, April 30. A virtual gallery will be available on the Cornerstone Center for the Arts website during this time. This event is free and open to the public, but visitors are asked to follow social distancing guidelines and wear masks. Ron Richcreek at Dandelion’s Flowers and Gifts:
Ron Richcreek is a Yorktown native living in Daleville, Indiana, who has been studying and making functional pottery for more than a dozen years. Along with custom orders, he makes mugs, plates, platters, bowls, beer growlers, urns, vases, ikebanas, and much more. Recently, Ron has been exploring Cone 10 porcelain and his finished works have been well-received - selling out immediately.  His work is currently exhibited in Minnetrista's Juried Art Show and displayed for sale at IU Med. Ball Hospital.  Stop by Dandelion's Flowers and Gifts to visit with the artist and see his work from 5PM-8PM April 1st.  Dandelion's is located at 120 S. Walnut Street next to the Barking Cow.

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will feature the remaining paintings of Jim Faulkner, opening Thursday April 1, 5 – 8 pm.  During the show we will gather the community’s memories of the beloved painter.

Jim Faulkner's dedication, sensitivity, and skill as a painter for more than 50 years made him one of the most revered artists in our region and statewide. On January 29, 2021 Jim passed away at 86.  Gordy Fine Art and Framing is proud to offer about a dozen of his paintings in our gallery and our online store located on our website. These make up the remainder of his completed works.

The show will open on Thursday April 1, 5 – 8 pm and remain on view through May 28. During the show we encourage guests to share their memories of Jim in a journal which can be passed on to family and friends.  Because of Covid restrictions no refreshments will be served during the event.

During his career, Jim’s paintings defined East Central Indiana's open landscapes, weathered buildings, and tree lines. His images are witness to the constant winds, shifting bedrock, and changing rural environment of Indiana.

Missy Camille:
Art has always been a part of me. I didn't always share that part of me. Creating was therapy. My work didn't seem “good enough” to show the world. Something changed though. Art should never be hidden for fear of it being judged. Painting is my voice. I don't write or sing, but I want my art to be heard and understood. Since it is my passion, I would love to talk to you about it.  Sharing my art is as important to me now, as creating it. Portraiture is my passion. I will be showcasing my portrait work in a variety of mediums. Many of which have never been shown. Portrait work is sometimes not well received, and not understood. I create and share it anyway. Texture is a favorite of mine, so acrylic and oil paints are my most used medium. Watercolor and ink are a close second. Charcoal and pencil are my go to. My sketchbooks are many!  Hope to see you there!

Michelle Duran:
Michelle Duran is a maker who specializes in miniatures of the mysterious (tarot cards, ouija boards, crystal balls) and related jewelry, as well as the traditional art of embroidery. She can custom tailor dishtowel or apron colors to match any kind of culinary décor. 

Mattie Ewing:
Mattie Ewing is an art enthusiast who enjoys making a variety of many different items that are expressive to her personality and spirituality. These items include Beginner to Advanced Spiritual Kits, Manifestation boxes, Neon Trippy art, Spirit Boards, mini voodoo dolls, elegant profanity, and her own version of The Major Arcana. She uses upcycled items such as empty jars and even cereal boxes in her work. Mattie’s children, Arabella and Oliver, are artists in training and will be selling their their eclectic and unique drawings, alongside their mom’s work. Their new business name is EmoGypsy Pride N' More.

Debra Gindhart:
“Debra’s never met a piece of crap she couldn’t turn into something beautiful.”-Mary Bebe 2008. 

Debra Gindhart, local artist-maker and visual arts educator will feature her Green Glam Studio jewelry for April’s First Thursday at Madjax Muncie. Enjoy the whimsical and beautiful statement jewelry, necklaces, pendants, and earrings. Found objects, estate baubles, thrift store finds, as well as the boxes of beads and findings kind folks gift her combined with design and creativity result in one of a kind accessories. Sarah Shaffer:
“Body of Work,” a collection of paintings by Sarah Shaffer, is inspired by the inner workings of the human body. From the microbiology of bones to expressively painted organs to neurological pathways, this series explores what we are made of. “Body of Work” will be on display at MadJax in the second floor galleries with an opening on Thursday, April 1 from 5-8 pm.

Neal Soley:
Based in Indianapolis, The Tulip Factory is a company created by Neal Soley. This company campaigns Soley’s exploration of self expression throughout the use of different mediums. The collection of works are representative of periods throughout Soley’s exploration. Please join the artist Thursday, February 4 on the second floor of the Madjax Building. Practice social distancing and kindly wear a mask when needed, and view a collection of paintings on canvas, works on paper, and more.

Jill Palumbo has been an artist at heart since her earliest memories. She started selling beaded macramé jewelry in local gift shops as a middle schooler. She now designs her own award-winning beads in polymer, writes articles, and teaches workshops. You will find her creations today at the Minnetrista Orchard Shop.

Palumbo’s love of art intersects with her appreciation of cultures and understanding through communication. Her career as a teacher of French, Japanese, and Spanish smoothed her way to interact with polymer artists around the globe. Buoyed by her successes in the international community, Palumbo ventured into her local art community as a member of the Muncie Artist Guild.

Palumbo takes her citizenship in the world seriously, and her artwork often reflects her struggles to help others. She works through her feelings in glass and acrylic as well as her longtime favorite, polymer.    She is also drawn to the healing experiences only nature can provide.

Jill Palumbo’s artwork and articles have been published in the Star Press, Polymer Café Magazine, and M Magazine. She is currently working on a mosaic project commissioned by Ball State University for the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse.

Please join us at the Muncie Makes Lab for an exhibition of the work of Ball State's “ART 370: Glass Design: Technology and Industry” immersive learning course from 5-8pm.  

ART 370 is a new transdisciplinary immersive learning class that exposed and explored technological advances in the renowned regional glass industry. Students and faculty from the School of Art and the Department of Architecture engaged in material research, interviews, and insights from leaders in glass industry, award winning public artists, and local community arts leaders. Students' research led to the development of multiple new ‘Donor Wall’ proposals for Minnetrista as well as rethinking design objects in the era of a pandemic.

Along with some stunning new works, DJ Jannell will have some older pieces to showcase and a dope mix playing for your pleasure. Light refreshments provided.
