July's First Thursday

The Madjax Art Show!
The show will be heled on July 2 for July’s First Thursday celebrations from 5-8pm on the 2nd floor (wheelchair accessible) of Madjax Muncie, located at 515 East Main Street. We encourage visitors to be safe, practice social distancing, and wear masks when needed. The following artists will be featured in the show:Missy Camille Adams
POP ART PRESIDENTS: HISTORICAL NOT POLITICAL
A self-taught artist, Missy Camille Adams loves portraiture, and is not tied down to realism. She has been influenced by artists such as Andy Warhol and Chuck Close.
For Pop Art Presidents, Missy took on the task of painting a red, white, and blue portrait of each United States president. This is a living series, Pop Art Presidents will continue with a new portrait after each election cycle.
Outside of their time as president, who were these men? What were their families like? What lead them to run for the presidency? These questions Missy asked and researched as the project progressed. She hopes to open discussion about the lives of those who have held this office. While the subjects were politicians, this is not a political statement as much as it is a visual tour of the men elected to run this country through the history of our nation.BigSkorp Furio

Ashley Beatty & Jeff Schofield Installation
2pm to 3pm @
Prairie Creek Reservoir
Mid-Indiana Trails
E 650 S Rd
ASHLEY BEATTY & JEFF SCHOFIELD INSTALLATION AT PRAIRIE CREEK
During their residency at PlySpace this August, Beatty and Schofield have installed sustainably themed artworks along the south shore of Prairie Creek Reservoir where the Mid-Indiana Trails (MINT) are located. Visitors to the MINT and Prairie Creek hiking and bicycle trails can see a series of artworks made from natural materials and found objects that investigate human transgressions of natural settings. Signage has been posted along the trails identifying the locations of the pieces. This art installation is a partnership between PlySpace and Mid-Indiana Trails.
The project is located at Prairie Mountain Bike Trailhead. The parking lot is located along East 650 Service Road (E 650 S Rd) near the intersection with South County Road 544 East (S Co Rd 544 E).
Beatty and Schofield will host a self-guided walking tour of the sculptures on Saturday, August 22nd, with a short artist talk and Q&A at 2:00 PM. Participants should meet at the trailhead parking lot. Visitors to the sites and trails must wear masks when unable to socially distance. Paper maps and descriptions of the project will be available at the site and online at plyspace.org/MINT. The work can be found at the eastern end of Prairie Creek Loop 1, in the “Maple Grove”.
PlySpace is an artist-in-residence program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council which promotes community collaborative projects throughout the city of Muncie. Mid Indiana Trails (MINT) was selected as a partner for this project due to the artists’ desire to work at a site that contemplates human transgressions in a natural setting. David Bradway of MINT writes, “Mid-Indiana Trails is very excited to be able to partner with PlySpace and provide an area for their resident artists to create. Ashley and Jeff have created incredible installations that are expressive while also fitting in well with the natural setting of Prairie Creek Trails.”
About the Installation
The permanent sculptural installations include dozens of sculptural trail markers made from forest materials and discarded plastic items found in the woods. These markers have been strategically placed by the side of the pathways like a series of core samples showing sediment layers beneath the forest floor. A series of stepping stones have also been laid across Prairie Park Creek for visitors to explore. They will be made from a similar mix of natural and manmade items to create a group of sculptural objects intruding upon the stream. As such, they embody a physical expression of human transgressions in the landscape.
In another permanent work, the artists dissected a fallen tree trunk by cutting it into segments that were spread out sequentially where it fell in the woods. This minimalist artwork expresses a singular act of slicing a tree trunk into sections. The installation distills the conversation about deforestation, forest fires, and waste of natural resources to a basic act of aggression.
Other work produced by the artists will be temporary and will be removed after August 22, 2020. In one work, Mycorrhizal Networks, a group of trees have been tied together with paracord creating an artificial canopy overhead. The installation expresses notions about Forest Mycorrhizal Networks, a root-based form of consciousness linking plants in local ecosystems. Plants communicate through the mycorrhizal network in a similar manner to data traveling through color-coded wires in electronic networks.
The artists have also wrapped a series of tree trunks with upcycled plastic items, involving an acre-sized grove of trees. The colorful installation represents the bondage of trees as a metaphor for human bodies and expresses the restriction of natural growth cycles. It questions the sustainability of our globalized culture focused on overproduction and mass consumption.

May's First Thursday (Full Listing)
5pm to 8pm @
Downtown Muncie
Muncie Mystery
Various locationsDo you have the brains, heart and courage to solve the Muncie Mystery?
A crime – pretend crime, of course – has been committed and we need YOUR help finding the culprit and the “weapon” used.
Join fellow citizen CSI: Emerald City investigators for the second Muncie Mystery during First Thursday on May 6 in downtown Muncie.
According to reports, a break-in has occurred at the Wizard of Oz’s secret Muncie laboratory in the “Emerald City” neighborhood. The suspect, despite several warnings to pay no attention to that man behind the curtain, entered the restricted area. The Wizard confronted the suspect and suffered a blow to his noggin but has not been able to identify the perpetrator.
Six primary suspects - Wicked Witch of West, Dorothy, Scarecrow, Lion, Glinda the Good Witch and The Mayor of Munchkinland - were spotted near the scene at the time of the crime. And, lucky for our eagle-eyed investigators, several pieces of evidence were left behind.
Between 5 and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 6, investigators of all ages are invited to visit 10 participating downtown businesses. At each location, you will have the chance to question suspects about their whereabouts during the time of the break in and look at crime lab reports on several possible “weapons.”
Participating businesses are YWCA, Aspect 6, Kirk's Bike Shop, Inland Design, Vahalla (21+), IVY Tech (Fisher Building), Twin Archer, Mama Bonds and The Fickle Peach (21+).
You can download a Crime Tracker – with map - now at www.muncieneighborhoods.org/munciemystery. You may also pick one up during First Thursday at Canan Commons or Dave’s Alley.
Crime Trackers must be turned in at Canan Commons by 6:30 p.m. The guilty party and facts about the case will be revealed at Canan Commons at 7.
Investigators will also be able to enjoy tethered hot air balloon “rides” and meet a Horse of a Different Color and the Runway for Rescues animals at Canan Commons during the event. The hot air balloon will be set up for photo opportunities at 5 and begin tethered rides at 6:45 p.m.
Investigators who correctly identify the criminal and weapon will be entered into a drawing for great prizes, including 1 Overnight Stay at the Courtyard Marriott;
2 Family Pack Tickets to see Muncie Civic Theatre’s production of The Wizard of Oz at Canan Commons; 1 Annual Family Membership to the Muncie Children's Museum; 1 Muncie Graphic Pillow from Muncie Map Co.; 1 Bruce Pizza and $10 drink certificate from Vallhalla; 2 tickets to Sept. 2 BSU football season opener game with BSU vs. Western Illinois; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to Twin Archer; 1 $25 Gift Certificate to The Caffeinery, and 1 Tethered Hot Air Balloon Ride at the event.
You must be present to win.
Participants are asked to follow posted mask requirements inside some downtown businesses and it is suggested masks be worn outside when in large crowds.
Muncie Mystery is presented by Downtown Muncie, Muncie Civic Theatre, Indiana Public Radio, Ball State PBS, Ball State Office of Community Engagement and Muncie Neighborhoods.

Beam-Hindman earned a Bachelor of Science in technology from Purdue University North Central, and 22 years later, earned a Master of Arts in adult education from Ball State University. After retiring from Ivy Tech Community College, Beam-Hindman took time to pursue an early interest in art. She is a self-taught artist who paints in acrylics, and as a member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2015, she credits the other Guild members with providing the mentoring and friendship she needed to hone her artistic skills.
Years ago, Beam-Hindman entered the open division competition at the Delaware County Fair with a painting on cardboard in poster paints and was encouraged when the space-themed painting won first place! In 2010, Beam-Hindman’s painting of Voyager II won 2nd place for Imaging, plus the Judges’ Choice Award, at the Great Lakes Astronomical League’s competition for photographers and imagers. Her triptych paintings of Comet McNaught won first place for Imaging at the Annual Indiana Family Star Party in 2012. Several of her space-themed paintings have also won awards at the Muncie Artists Guild’s Annual Shows.
Beam-Hindman’s lifelong interest in astronomy and space exploration inspires much of her artwork, as do works by space artists Chesley Bonestell, David Hardy and astronaut/artist Alan Bean. Beam-Hindman is also a charter member of the Muncie Astronomy Club since 2000 and is active in the Club’s community outreach program on science education, where she uses art to promote and enhance the program.

Bloom: A Beautiful Process of BecomingAbout the Artist: Debra Shidler
I hail from the mid-west; a small town in central Indiana called Portland. Art is ingrained in my upbringing as there are wood workers, glass blowers, fashion designers and painters within my family tree. I have always loved art since I was a child and could be found drawing in the afternoon sun by a door way. I have continually been inspired by nature, but had been struggling with a perfectionistic outlook throughout my art journey.
While taking classes for my art degree at Ball State; a painting teacher advised me to just live with a painting I loathed. She pushed me to see the imperfections and see the beauty in the work. That was the first time I had really stopped and took in my art. It was hard to see the beauty because I could only see what I had failed to accomplish in the painting. I began looking at the work as a whole with time I saw my painting process and fell in love.
I soon realized my creative style was marrying organic abstract with nature images ranging from birds, flowers, seed pods, wood grain, etc. While in ceramic and metal working classes I enjoyed exploring imprint of natural found objects. I loved painting in oils as this medium allows an artist to come back and push the colors or add textures. I really enjoy artist from all mediums as well. I am inspired by the colors and movement of Paul Klee’s work. The clean, organic architecture and designs of Frank Lloyd Wright, and gorgeous glass work of Dale Chihuly. The impressive scale and ingenuity of the Burning Man Exhibits is truly an experience.
My work to this day still explores these very key elements and inspirations; however, it was my son who reminded me of loving the imperfections of creating again. I had recently rented a pottery wheel to help my son discover the love of art; of course, at 3 he loves to see what materials will do with force. As I pulled up a pot form from the wheel he would then “help.” This created a rose like sculpture. It was simplistic, but stunning.
My art has been in the Juried Art Show at Minnetrista, Cornerstone Center for Arts Show, Ball State’s Juried Art Show, Echo Gallery, Made in Muncie, F.B. Fogg Salon and Cornerstone Center for the Arts all in central Indiana. I have also worked within the Muncie community at the Boys & Girls Club doing summer art programs and the Unity Center; as it my goal to inspire youth to express themselves and see the beauty around them.
I began my formal art training at Ball State University in the Fall of 2001 and finished in the Spring of 2006. I was able to explore many mediums such as: enameling to copper forms and flat surfaces; metal working with various metals like copper, silver and nickel; electroforming to grow copper products, discovering numerous ceramic glazing processes and firing techniques; printing and etching; as well as painting.
The subject of this show is Bloom; a beautiful process of becoming. During this time of the epidemic, I have really been able to dive back into art again. The creative outlet has been uplifting, challenging and a welcome distraction. Most of the work is focused on flowers as this reminds me of new growth and spring when the world wakes up from hibernation. I like to paint with acid like colors, but have been trying to develop other tints and shades in my pallet. The bright colors remind me of happiness and have a playful demeanor; which I feel allow my abstract figures and objects to dance on the canvas.
I hope my work brings you joy, a feeling of optimism and a sense of freedom. Please enjoy my show.

Muncie Artists Guild’s June 2021
Artist of the Month, Karen FisherKaren Fisher moved to Muncie in 1972 as a Ball State freshman majoring in art education. Just as her graduation goal came into sight, and her plan to exit Muncie was forming, she met Paul Fisher, a native of Muncie; the rest (as they say) is history. Paul and Karen were married in 1982 and have one daughter, Elizabeth.
Karen finished her undergraduate degree in 1976 in art education and completed her master’s degree in education in 1990. She taught reading in the Anderson schools before going to work at Gordy’s Art Mart. In 2003 Karen and Paul purchased the business from the Gordys’ and renamed it, simply, Art Mart. Art Mart is a successful art materials business in the BSU “Village.” Karen is a Certified Art Materials Retailer by NAMTA, an International Art Materials Association. This year Art Mart received two awards from the Best of Ball State which is sponsored by the Daily News. They were thrilled and proud to accept both the Best Small Business Award and the Best Customer Service Award.
Karen has taught art classes to many young students and adults over her years in art materials. She still interacts with many of those same folks, now some have kids and grandkids. Karen still does Art Camps in the summertime and often goes to area family art festivals to demonstrate one process or another. She also taught at Cornerstone Center for the Arts for several years.
As an artist Karen likes to paint and draw. “I love stuff! Often I paint or draw what is on my studio table. Recently I have enjoyed drawing and painting architectural components. In particular I have been very interested in corbels, molding and fancy bric-a-brac on old Victorian homes. Living in a 125-year-old home allows me to appreciate the work that went into all the beautiful decoration on many of the old homes.”
Karen is a member of Muncie Artist Guild, a new member of the Mayor’s Public Arts Committee as well as a longtime member of NAMTA, National Art Materials Trade Association, and, iAMart, an international organization of Independent Art Materials stores.

Local artist and educator Debra Gindhart Dragoo annual exhibit addressing Native American Indian Genocide Month during ArtsWalk 2021. Abolish Columbus Day and start celebrating the native cultures. The holiday’s popularity has been waning for some time. It has already been renamed Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a reminder that Columbus’s voyages set off a chain of events that wreaked havoc on native populations in the New World. Columbus Day’s sentiments are superfluous. Instead, let’s focus on the indigenous people displaced by Columbus and those who followed in his wake. Let’s start reimagining that future as one that doesn’t honor Christopher Columbus. Debra will exhibit several pieces of wall art with Anti Columbus and pro Native American Peoples text on altered thrift store art.
