Artist Talk // PlySpace Resident Fellows Adam Stacey and Makenzie Goodman
7pm @
Arts and Journalism Building, Ball State University
Room 225
1101 N McKinley Ave, Muncie, Indiana 47306
Adam Stacey and Makenzie Goodman will present an Artist Talk about their past and current work on Wednesday, November 10, at 7:00 pm in the Arts and Journalism Building room 225 on the campus of Ball State University. On Thursday, November 18, Stacey and Goodman will host a one-night only immersive installation entitled, The First Guide in the PlySpace Gallery (608 E Main Street, Muncie) from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Both events are free and open to the public. Masks are required.
While at PlySpace Adam Stacey and Makenzie Goodman created The First Guide, an installation focused on the past, present, and future of the White River that runs through Muncie. Through alternative and analog photography, slip-cast mold making, and an 8mm video projection they consider the historical, psychological and ecological significance the river provides to Muncie’s residents. Throughout their time as artist residents in Muncie, they have researched and interviewed residents, historians, and water advocates and explored the White River to trace past ecological trespasses and consider a way towards a sustainable future. Their installation will feature a recontextualized map of the White River made in collaboration with BSU School of Art 2D foundation students and Assistant Teaching Professor Devon Ward.
Stacey and Goodman, based between Los Angeles and Marfa, TX, have been collaborating together since 2016. Their research-based work incorporates a range of media, including photography, ceramics, video and found objects to create installations that explore values and belief systems associated with place. Adam received his Master of Fine Arts in sculpture from Alfred University and Makenzie received her Master of Fine Arts in photography from Brooks Institute. Their work has been shown widely throughout Los Angeles and they were recent residents at Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency program.

Recycling as a Creative Practice: Paper-Making with Found Materials // Workshop by Jordan Delzell
3pm @
PlySpace Gallery
608 E Main Street, Muncie, IN 47305
“Recycling as a Creative Practice: Paper-making with Found Materials”, which will be held on Saturday, December 4, at 3:00 pm, is a free workshop led by PlySpace Resident Jordan Delzell, that will introduce participants to the basics of paper-making using everyday materials that can be found in or near Muncie. Discarded paper, lint and plants will be blended, forming a pulp that can be used to create stationary, functional vessels or sculptural objects. By using discarded items that can be sourced in Muncie we will take collective action to reduce items in the local waste stream while also learning a fun and creative process that requires little experience, equipment and monetary investment.
Participants are encouraged to bring paper materials to recycle. This free workshop will begin with a more structured demonstration, with most of the time being devoted to self-directed experimentation or the completion of a specific project. Participants are welcome to take their creations home. Masks are required. Registration is required.
The workshop will take place in the PlySpace gallery, (608 E Main Street, Muncie) which Jordan will transform into a temporary recycling center. The recycling center is open to the public during the scheduled workshop time and during drop-in hours on First Thursday, December 2 and Monday, December 6 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Gordy Fine Art and Framing will open an exhibition and sale of new paintings and sculpture by Alfredo Marín-Carle, Thursday April 7th, 5-8 pm. Marín-Carle joined the faculty at Ball State University in 1985. He is now Associate Professor Emeritus and resides in Indianapolis. Throughout the evening, he will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. At 6:15 the artist will give a 10-15 minute presentation about his work and answer questions.
Visions, the title of the exhibit, states simply that these works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies. “In the process of creation, I experience the Buddhist concept of interdependence,” says Marín-Carle, “that nothing exists on its own.” The artist builds up layers and then sands them down. He uses stencils to apply forms and shapes, then rubs them with chemicals and carves deep and aggressive marks that disturb their clarity. In this way he is exploring the creation and destruction always going on around us.
The show will be on view with works for sale through May 28.

Other sources for subject matter come from her dedication to serving others through a food assistance program at Trinity Episcopal church. She is energized by sharing her experiences through teaching and displaying her art.

William Mueller is an MFA Candidate at Ball State University. His thesis exhibition ‘Operating Cost’ is a collection of works with a narrative of how public relation, marketing, and advertising campaigns can persuade the public opinion and how we as consumers are to handle that information. The work is constructed primarily with cast concrete, a material that is known for its aesthetic value in modern architecture. This material is viewed as strong, resilient, and sustainable when in fact it can be brittle, require frequent maintenance, and is the third leading contributor to greenhouse gases. Our perception of the world around us is not always correct and quite often, it is shaped by firms that seek to do so for ulterior motives. This work challenges the viewer to think critically about the information that we take for granted.PlySpace

Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.Visions, the title of the exhibit, states simply that these works of art convey what the artist sees, reflecting his lifetime fascination with eastern philosophies.
Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company promotes talented artists, provides appraisals, and offers expert design and craftsmanship for framing and displaying treasured family possessions and works of art. Business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5:30 pm, Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm. Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company is located at 224 East Main Street, next door to Muncie Civic Theatre. The Muncie Artists Guild's Artist of the Month is Marta Stephens!
Her work will be on view at the following locations downtown:
Vera Mae's, Northwest Bank, Old National, Rose Bud Coffeehouse, and Parlour.Marta Stephens was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but has called Indiana her home since the age of four. Her formal art education includes courses at U.C.L.A, the Pasadena Art Center College of Design, and Ball State University. However, while at Ball State, she changed her major and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Public Relations in 2001.
Marta has been painting for over 40 years. She is an active member of the Muncie Artists Guild since 2018 and has won several awards for her artwork. Her painting style has continuously evolved through experimentation and studying works of contemporary and traditional impressionist artists. She remains open to learning new techniques. Thus, this self-taught artist’s style is in a constant state of development.
She has worked with a variety of mediums including ink, washes, clay, and charcoals. Several years later she began exploring oils and acrylics. The subject matters of her paintings are primarily still lifes and landscapes. Gardening is one of her other creative passions, so inspiration often comes from nature and the study of light, shadows, and textures.
Marta is also a published author of crime mystery novels all of which have received several awards and recognitions over the years. Her recent publication in 2021 is an anthology of short mysteries. Marta retired in 2020 from Ball State University, Human Resources, after 41 years. Since then, she has pursued her life-long passion—art.
For more information about Marta’s artwork and novels, visit www.mstephensbooks.com. Follow her on Facebook, https://www.facebook.com/marta.stephens2/.
