Every Sunday, egos are crushed and legends are born at Trivia Brawl. Come and play for free, solo or with a team, and show off your command of all knowledge trivial. Win, and split up a a $50 Doc's gift certificate on food, drinks, tickets, or merchandise. Every game is six rounds of trivia questions on a wide variety of topics in pop culture, science, history, and current events. Every tenth question is part of our inadvertent quest to discriminate against the deaf, and has players listening to a song and attempting to identify its title, band, and album. The sixth round is a special visual aid round in which the blind are instead at an unfair disadvantage. Team signup starts at 9pm, and unless we go into a Sudden Death Lightning Bloodfeud Overtime Round (of Death)™, the game tends to wrap up at about 11pm.

Clay Camp: Traveling the World Through Art - 308 E MainMany of the cities young artists have been busy this summer. Art Mart and The Artist Within sponsored ArtCamp again this summer, and once again we had a great bunch of artist campers! These campers took a trip around the world through art, studying the art and cultures of many other countries. They have drawn, painted, and potted during their voyage and the culmination of their travels will be on exhibit at Gallery 308 from 1st Thursday, August 2, 2012 through August 11, 2012 at Gallery 308 (308 E. Main St. in downtown Muncie).
Karen Fisher, owner of Art Mart and longtime ArtCamp instructor calls these artists dedicated! "These artists want to be here, they want to get up early and come to camp because they are going to have some fun, work hard, and produce art they are proud of. I like to get materials into their hands that they might not try any other time. This year my campers used paper pulp to create cool totems. It is not as easy as it looks to use!"
Bob Hartley of the Artist Within says that he is always amazed and proud of the quality and amount of work his Clay Campers produce in one week. Resident potter Toren Scott admits being "blown away" by the way the young campers catch onto working on the potter's wheel and is equally proud of their progress. This year's Clay Camp had three different themes based on "Traveling the World Through Art": "Back to Antiquity: Egypt, Greece and the Roman Empire", "Exploring the Orient/China, Japan and Korea", and "Closer to Home/Native American Arts and Crafts". Each theme had two separate age groups 6-8 years old and 9-12 years old. Gallery 308 will showcase the work of the nearly 40 Clay Camp artists.

Studio Glass: Celebrating 50 Years - 224 E MainThis month-long exhibit focuses on works by three Indiana glass artists: Cheryl Anne Lorance, Lisa Pelo, and Ben Johnson. Lorance, a regular Gordy exhibitor with her bronze sculptures, will bring a new series of glass pieces for the month-long display. This will be the first showing in the space for Pelo and Johnson.
In the expert hands of these three Indiana artists, glass has become biomorphic fantasies, gracefully bending female forms, patchwork vessels and printmaking tools.
Lorance will introduce a series of biomorphic forms that seem to be transforming, not yet identifiable as either male or female; embryo of unknown lineage and intent. "Nefarious Lair" includes a holding structure of rubber, steel, and bronze cable, nestling a translucent green, ambiguous yet seductive, pupae with gaping orifice. The viewer determines the life form's true nature. It's beautiful, but is it friendly?
Johnson will exhibit both the highly-textured glass vessels/printmaking tools and the subsequent prints he created. Currently finishing his MFA at Ball State, Johnson has studied glass at Kent State, the Corning Museum of Glass, the famous Pilchuck Glass School, and Scuola del Betro Abate Zanetti in Murano, Italy. He also teaches glass at the Indianapolis Art Center.
Pelo lives in Clayton, Indiana, and as the head of the Glass Department of the Indianapolis Art Center, where she teaches glassblowing. She will exhibit "Out of the Darkness," a stunning bouquet of orange and lime green glass floral pieces that seem lit from within, along with "Her Golden Figure," a vase-like piece with the bending, stretching female form incased, but still on public display.
A reception for the artists will be held on the monthly "First Thursday" gallery-walk, August 2, 2012, from 5 to 8PM. The artists will speak about their work beginning at 6:30 PM. The public is encouraged to attend, and light refreshments will be served. Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co. is located at 224 E. Main Street. For more information, call 765-284-8422 or visit www.gordyframing.com.

Jill Palumbo - 112 W JacksonJill Palumbo and her husband, Pat, live in Muncie, Indiana, where they are raising two sons, Nick (20) and Vince (15). Jill is a world citizen at heart; certified to teach French, Japanese and Spanish, she has taught world languages to two generations of students at Blackford High School in Hartford City. Jill is also an artist in her spare time. She makes jewelry and mosaics and especially loves pushing limits in her favorite media, polymer clay.
Although Jill dreamed of being an artist since early childhood, she has only recently begun to explore this passion with great intent. She lost her mom in 2006 and soon discovered that art was a powerful source of healing. Jill's sister, Nancy, helped her discover jewelry design, and a friend, Anna, showed Jill how she made miniatures with polymer clay. The idea of combining jewelry designs with custom made components in polymer clay set Jill on a clay-creating adventure that has lead to publishing articles in internationally distributed magazines and winning awards in local and international art competitions.
Jill loves the outdoors and her artwork reflects this. Textures and motifs from leaves, shells, rocks and flowers play an important role in many of her creations. Her art is also influenced by her study of world languages and cultures. The technique that is Jill's "signature" is her unique way of creating and incorporating millefiori canes into her creations. This technique is also called "caning" and was borrowed from Italian glass makers. Jill describes millefiori as "painting in three dimensions with a palette of polymer clay".
Jill is proud to be a member of the Muncie Artist Guild, the Indiana Polymer Clay Association and the International Polymer Clay Association.

Phil Vore - 308 E MainLegendary in the local arts scene for over 20 years, Phil brings his unique style to Gallery 308. A recent fire at his home and studio has done little to diminish the passion of this outstanding artist and he has been busy salvaging older work as well as creating new and exciting expressions.

Laseau to Exhibit "Greek Isles +" - 224 E MainPaul Laseau began painting in watercolor media in 1992 on a trip to the Greek islands. He was inspired by the delicate, but vibrant colors of the sun-baked white villages that cling to the crest of island mountains. Laseau will exhibit more than a dozen paintings of these paintings during the month of September at Gordy Fine Art & Framing in downtown Muncie. Titled, Greekl Isles +, the show is based largely on sketches and photos from several subsequent trips to Greece, and includes a few paintings from other Mediterranean countries.
The former BSU Architecture professor has published several books on the art of pen and ink sketching and later, a book about watercolors. "Like many artists, I was drawn to watercolor because the medium supports a fluid, spontaneous approach to painting. I suppose it is a question of level of comfort, given my temperament. While my approach to painting involves some forethought or planning, there is a pleasurable flow to the work that would be ruined by extended "massaging" of the piece."
Laseau brought to his work observations skills developed through 35 years of experience in freehand sketching and photography of mostly architectural subjects, from travels to the coasts of Greece, Italy, England, New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.
"For me the value of painting lies more in the act than in the end result. Typically, I am completely absorbed in the subject of a painting. I continue to be fascinated by the historical response of humans to the forces of nature – land, water, sun – as they continue to define appropriate human habitat. Coastal towns and harbors provide particularly vibrant subjects."
Laseau's work has been exhibited in several universities in the U.S. and has been included in The Indiana Watercolor Society, Minnetrista Cultural Center and Red Tail Conservancy exhibits. Represented locally by the Gordy's, Laseau's work is on display throughout the year. This exhibit features new works that have not previously hung at the gallery.
A reception for the artist will be held during the First Thursday art event in downtown Muncie, September 6, 2012, from 5 to 8 PM. The artist will speak about his work at 6:15.

Every September for the past 20 years the troop hosts a hog roast as their primary fund raiser to help pay for outings, camp fees, equipment, supplies and advancement awards. As a community service project, the Troop assists the Hamilton Township Fire Department with their annual hog roast. In return, the fire fighters provide the hog roasters for the troop’s use.
Troop 22, chartered by St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, has been very active in our community for over 60 years. The Troop has an average membership of forty boys and an impressive list of Eagle Scouts. This event is the primary source of funding for the many activities offered to the boys. Gallery 308
308 E MainWork by 2012 Paper Chase Show "Best in Show" winner Ann Johnson. “There is So Much I Want to Say to You” is a collection of pictures Ann has painted since she sold F.B. Fogg in 2008.
What began as desire for watercolor paper which led her, as a young mother to take the first mixing of lint from her dryer to form an early handmade paper, blossomed into a 24-year career as handmade paper artist F.B. Fogg. According to Johnson, “In my not so- quaint past, I took paper further than it should go… clocks sold in every state in the union, sculptures in 14 countries, and enough golden retrievers to form an avalanche of paper. Then I sold Fogg. When you experience loss or change, you surprise yourself. Sometimes what matters is not what one gives, but what one gives up. Now, I have returned to my 'roots', so to speak, and am once more a painter, a colorist. So painting is a delight for me and best yet, I paint only to enjoy the art. What a delightful time I am having!"
Gallery 308 will also be hosting art making activities for all ages with aerosols, chalk, and the ever-popular squirt gun painting. Across Main Street, members of the BSU FreshstART group and other local artists will be "chalking the block". Be sure to check out their art!
In case you miss the gallery opening, the exhibit continues through October 26. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm. Admission is free.
Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.
10 Year Gallery Anniversary - 224 E MainTen years ago, Brian and Genny Gordy realized a dream by turning their oversized frame shop showroom into a legitimate art gallery. The Boyce Block space already offered high ceilings and hardwood floors, and underneath layers of wallpaper, a stunning plaster wall, authentically distressed by the centuries. A nifty hanging system was installed to protect that wall, and a gallery was born. The first artist was Gala Bent, who had worked for the Gordy’s while attending Ball State University as an art major. The opening reception was held on the first Thursday in October 2002.
The Gordy’s – also graduates of the BSU Art Department – had a vision about fine art, fine handcrafted picture framing, and the downtown Muncie art scene. They were certainly not alone in that vision, and a decade later, “First Thursdays” is a term that seldom needs explanation. Scores of art lovers mark their calendars to visit various gallery spaces downtown for an evening of exhibits of mostly local works that include oil paintings, watercolors, prints, jewelry, and a robust selection of pottery. Music is often a part of that scene, running the gamut from tuba ensembles to drum circles.
“It is fulfilling,” offers Brian Gordy, “to live in a town that embraces its art and artists, not only by showing up at the various exhibits, but by collecting works by those artists, many of whom are recognized far beyond the boundaries of Delaware County.” The Gordy gallery represents twenty two local and regional artists.
The owner himself will be the exhibitor on the wall for the month, opening during the annual ArtsWalk event on October 4, 2012. Designated an Indiana Artisan artist, Gordy has won numerous awards and is included in galleries beyond his own. For this show, titled, “Recent Watercolors,” twenty new paintings with varying subjects will be hung, including complex compositions with intense colors and the first of a new series. The new pieces are semi-abstract images inspired by roots, riverbanks and reflective waters, and will hang alongside the final pieces of a turtle series the artist has been painting for the past seven years. States Gordy, “I consider these five images to be the most challenging and aesthetically successful of the turtle series. They also mark its conclusion.”
The evening’s agenda includes a short talk and introduction of artists at 6 PM, “Meet and Greet the Artists,” and photo op. “For any contribution, guests may have a picture taken with one of the artists. Greg Harty and Jack’s Camera Shop are donating services for this fun event, the proceeds of which will go to the 2nd Harvest Food Bank,” Genny explains. “They are doing The Soup Crawl again during ArtsWalk, and we wanted to help with their mission. We thought this would be a memorable way for the artists and the gallery to give back to the community that sustains us.”
Visitors may also register to win a $200 gift certificate for custom picture framing during the 5 to 9 PM time frame. For children, there will be a “Fill in the Famous Frame” coloring sheets. Music will be provided by Mike Statler, also of Jack’s Camera Shop.
“We started a gallery because it was an important aspect of our personal “ideal community” concept. That others are encouraged by our efforts is the icing on our anniversary cake,” offers Genny.
ArtsWalk Agenda at Gordy Fine Art 2012:
- 5 PM – Exhibit, “Recent Watercolors,” opens
- 6 PM - Genny will give a short talk and introduce the artist, Brian Gordy and other GFAF artists
- 6:15 to 7 PM - Meet and Greet artists and photo op for a donation to be given to 2nd Harvest
- 8 PM - Drawing for $200 gift certificate for picture framing (need not be present to win)
- All evening - Fill in the Famous Frame Coloring sheets for Children and Interested Adults
- 9 PM – Closing
- Intermittent: Woody Statler live music

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Co.
224 E Main - Pandora’s Creative BoxAward-winning photo artist Larry Graham has been invited to exhibit his work for the month of November in the downtown gallery of Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company. Opening with a reception on Thursday, November 1, 2012 from 5 to 8 PM, the display will include a variety of mediums from the former Ball State University professor of art. Titled “Pandora’s Creative Box,” the collection is, “a medley of new and old work using…photography, painting and drawing to illustrate the artist’s creative gifts over the last 40 years.” Graham has given over 100 exhibitions and numerous performances and lectures. He will speak about his work at 6:15 PM during the reception, discussing the techniques he uses, mixing photography, drawing, painting, and computer images, “to exemplify a culture which is a conglomerate.”
Graham primarily taught photography and computer graphics courses during his tenure at BSU, but also taught drawing, design, painting and art education classes. Retiring as a Full Professor in 1995, Graham is credited with introducing many professional photographers to the art form, including local resident Pamela DeMarris. “He was my mentor,” offers the international award-winning DeMarris. “He is the one who encouraged me to get my MFA in photography.” Other former students include the Ball State University Architect, Greg Graham, professional photographer, Ron Richcreek, and the gallery owners, Brian and Genny Gordy.
In addition to his personal portfolio, Graham has worked with contemporary American composers, Cleve Scott and Dan Senn. With Senn, the artist created two computer graphic pieces, “Bucktooth Bird, and “Three Primitives,” which have been extensively exhibited from New Zealand to New York.
Light refreshments will be served during the reception and the public is invited. Other downtown galleries will also be hosting art exhibits, and there is no charge to attend. The exhibit may also be viewed through November 30, 2012 during the gallery’s business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment.

Originally from Muncie, Julie has shown her work in several Indiana locations as well as the Atlanta Mercantile in Atlanta, GA. Her inspiration comes from life and what she sees around her. Savage's Ale House
127 High St - Digital Experiment: Collection by PROJECTiONESavage’s Ale House is proud to announce a collection of new prototypes by PROJECTiONE, a design/fabrication studio locally owned and operated by recent graduate architects Adam Buente and Kyle Perry. The design duo’s most recent work, Digital Experiment, will be on display during the month of November 2012, with an opening reception Thursday, November 1st, which coincides with downtown Muncie’s First Thursday event.
Originally a collaborative architectural thesis, PROJECTiONE began examining digital tools with analog methods through full-scale prototypes, research, and collaboration with other disciplines. A number of client-based projects, exhibitions, and product designs have fueled the development of this young start-up. Partnerships with Riley Hospital for Children and Indianapolis based non-profit do-tank People for Urban Progress, just to name a few, have Buente and Perry continuing to explore potential relationships between fabrication methods and both analog and digital design. Their most recent endeavor is a series of physical prototypes that utilize the capabilities of computational design tools, CNC machining technology, and an array of synthetic materials. Digital Experiment is described as an investigation of the “use and misuse of design and fabrication software,” in order to reintroduce “an intricate level of ornament previously achieved only by hand through skilled craftsmen and laborers” to the contemporary design table. The end result: a visual and textural treat.
A reception for the design duo will be held First Thursday, November 1st, 2012, from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown bar. The public is encouraged to attend and continue their First Thursday experience beyond normal gallery opening hours, as Savage’s is opening until 2 AM. The exhibit can be viewed through December 3rd, 2012 Monday through Thursday 11:30 AM – 2 AM, Friday 11:30 – 3 AM, Saturday 3 PM – 3 AM, and Sunday 3 PM – 2 AM.
Savage’s Ale House is located at 127 E High Street. Inquiries about PROJECTiONE, Digital Experiment, and other projects should be directed to info@projectione.com
