Gershwin’s Magic Key is the first-ever educationally entertaining theatrical symphony concert exposing children and their parents to the extraordinary life and musical masterpieces of one of the greatest American composers of all time! The story tells of a chance meeting on the streets of New York City between a poor newspaper boy and the great American composer, George Gershwin. The orchestra magically weaves Gershwin’s greatest hits into the drama as the master composer shares historical anecdotes about his life and musical passion. Audiences will be captivated by over twenty of Gershwin’s most popular compositions from classical compositions including Porgy & Bess, American in Paris, Cuban Overture, Concerto in F and Rhapsody in Blue to popular hits from the American Songbook including I Got Rhythm, Swanee, Stairway to Paradise, Someone to Watch Over Me, and Fascinating Rhythm.

Beneficence Brass is a brass quintet that is based in Muncie, IN. The group is comprised of four undergraduate and one masters student that attend Ball State University. The instrumentation for this group is two trumpets, french horn, trombone, and tuba.
BRAWÜSSimo is similar group in personal to Beneficence Brass. This group comes to us from Würzburg, Germany. Both groups will be playing a variety of music styles!

Save your date! Mark your calendars! Ball State University Honors College students participate for the second time in Forbidden Sounds, Music of the Holocaust; a concert honoring the music of composers who died or whose music was banned during 1933-1945, and the historical events of the Holocaust. The concert features music by composers such as: Erwin Schulhoff, Pavel Haas, Gideon Klein, Ilse Weber, Bedřich Smetana, music from Buchenwald and Dachau camps. In addition, Zita Nurok's short story A House with Stories to Tell, along with excerpts from The Book Thief will be read. Performers include Honors College Students Cassie Buescher, Wesley Byers, Devon Lejman, ChiChi Nnatubeugo, Drew Tomasik, Lydia Wiseheart, Sam Turk and Arianna Zielinski with their professor Dr. Galit Gertsenzon on piano and guest musicians: Rebecca Braun, Mezzo-Soprano and Prof. Emeritus George Wolfe on the Saxophone.

This summer, First Presbyterian Church of Muncie, Indiana is hosting a chamber music series: Peter Douglas & Friends. The first concert "Concert Celebrating PRIDE Month" will take place in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, June 18 at 7:00pm. Highlights of the program include LGBTQIA+ composers: Leonard Bernstein and Benjamin Britten and LGBTQIA+ performers and allies: Peter Douglas, piano; Liz Felsted, clarinet; Sunwoo Lee, piano; Maegan Pollonais, mezzo soprano; and Rory Wallace, tenor. Admission is free and open to the public. A free-will offering will be collected at each concert to offset the costs of the chamber music series.

Cost: Ages: Astral Mixtape is one of the most exciting new music ensembles with "out-of-this-world sounds" presenting a "one-of-kind event" to quote their most recent host, Meadowlark Music Festival Lincoln, Nebraska. Astral Mixtape is a multifaceted band based in Los Angeles, Astral Mixtape blends classical instrumental virtuosity with the sounds of their generation. They collaboratively create and perform original compositions and arrangements using a unique line-up of two violins, a cello, a piano, a synthesizer, and electronics. Their music combines the spectacle of pop, the spontaneity of jazz, and the experimentation of contemporary music.
Beyond their cutting-edge performances in clubs and concert halls, the quartet has contributed to the soundtracks of numerous short films. Many of these films – such as Leaving the Factory, Broken Layers, and Ink – have won prizes at Cannes and BAFTA film festivals. Most recently, the quartet was named a winner of the prestigious Astral Artists National Competition.

Cost: $10 general public (free for Ball State students) The Indianapolis Baroque Orchestra will perform “Music at the House of the Medici” in Sursa Hall at 7:30 pm. The performance is in conjunction with the spring special exhibition Beyond the Medici celebrating Italian Baroque art at the David Owsley Museum of Art. IBO's mission is to perform and promote music of the 17th and 18th centuries using period instruments and historically informed performance practices. “Music at the House of the Medici” will celebrate the sounds of Florence, Italy, in the 17th and early 18th centuries.
DOMA (2021 W. Riverside Ave) will remain open from 5-7 p.m. on March 28 so visitors can enjoy a free public reception and view the exhibition prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance at Sursa Hall (1809 W. Riverside Avenue). Ticket holders are also invited to a pre-concert chat by Dr. Murray Steib, professor of music history at Ball State, at 6:45 p.m. in Sursa Hall. Beyond the Medici and “Music at the House of the Medici” are made possible by Ball State’s Arts Alive Series, presented by the University’s College of Fine Arts.

Inclusive Excellence Concert with Guest Artist Joshua Thompson

Featuring collaborations between our BSU School of Music Students, Inclusive Excellence Committee, & Guest Speaker and Performer, Joshua Thompson.
Joshua Thompson is a pianist, social musicologist, teaching artist, and producer. Known onstage as Sock Joplin, he is increasingly recognized on a national scale for his expertise on classical composers of African descent and the inherent cultural connectivity in the broader aesthetic of Black Arts movements. As the 2020 Beckman Emerging Artist Fellow of the Arts Council of Indianapolis, he successfully completed his residence at the Africana Studies Center for Music and Society at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, followed by a performing/teaching residency at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA and currently serves as the first Musicologist in Residence for Classical Music Indy.
In 2004, Joshua obtained a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana. He deftly merged his music and advocacy paths through performances, appearances and working closely with an expanding range of national cultural arts organizations, social agencies, and universities to facilitate access to educational resources. The Arts Council of Indianapolis, the Indiana Arts Commission, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, Marian University, Butler University, the University of Puget Sound, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Winds, Classical Music Indy, Arts for Lawrence, Arts for Learning, Morning Brown, Inc., Indy Jazz Fest have all worked with Mr. Thompson in this capacity.
Joshua has worked with legendary bassist John Clayton, Smithsonian Research Fellow Dr. William C. Banfield, touring pianist Ric’key Pageot, Pulitzer Prize winner Anthony Davis, renowned clarinetist Anthony McGill, and international operatic soprano Angela Brown.
In October 2019, he was a featured presenter for the popular TED Talk series. His award-winning podcast series “Melanated Moments in Classical Music” with co-host Angela Brown, is currently in its fourth season of production and won 2020 Best Music Podcast from the Black Podcasting Awards and was recently featured in the British publication, Alternative Classical, and the Miami Times.Program
