Girl Talk: Storytelling as Advocacy Panel Discussion
6pm to 8pm @
PlySpace Gallery
608 E Main Street, Muncie, IN 47305
PlySpace, (www.plyspace.org) an Artist Residency Program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council, will be wrapping up the Spring Residency Term with a panel discussion and presentation organized and moderated by resident Siena Hancock. Girl Talk: Storytelling as Advocacy will be held at the PlySpace Gallery (608 E. Main St, Muncie, IN 47305) on Thursday, May 9th, from 6-8 PM.
Girl Talk: Storytelling as Advocacy will feature the voices of Ashleigh Bingham, Jill Christman, and Angie Roger-Howells, women who navigate the stories of women in Muncie through their storytelling and interview practices. Hancock will lead the discussion, focusing on how sharing the narratives of women’s experiences can serve as a catalyst for social change. During the event, she will also speak about the Community Collaborative project she has completed this spring as part of her residency.
Hancock joined PlySpace as an artist-in-residence in February of 2019. During her time in Muncie, she has conducted over 30 interviews with local citizens that discuss community, activism, and technology. Hancock is an interdisciplinary artist from Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Massachusetts College of Art with her Bachelors of Fine Arts in 2016, and has recently completed an installation at the Dirt Palace in Providence, Rhode Island and a residency at Main St. Arts in Upstate, New York. She will depart PlySpace this May.

Wand-Making Workshop with PlySpace Fellow Dana Lynn Harper
2pm to 4pm @
Minnetrista Museum & Gardens
Cantina
1200 N. Minnetrista Pkwy. IN 47303
Join PlySpace Resident Fellow Dana Lynn Harper for an amazing afternoon of wand-making! This free workshop is open to children and adults. The workshop will be held in the Cantina at Minnetrista on November 2nd, from 2-4 PM. Participants are welcome to arrive at any time between 2 and 3:30 PM and can create a wand using materials provided by PlySpace and the artist. What will your wand do? What will it look like? What magic does it hold?
Dana Harper often uses fantastic materials and creative processes in her work. She writes, “In our contemporary world, we often see wands as part of a costume or fantasy. But the wand is an empowering object that emboldens the user to recognize their own power. We will explore the wand as an object that conjures empowerment, magic and manifestation.”
The workshop format will be free-form and self-directed, with colorful materials set up at stations around the room. The artist and assistants from Ball State University will be on hand to give guidance. One wand will take approximately 30-40 minutes to make. Each participant will leave with their own wand, a representation of their own ability to change and affect the world in which they live. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and all are welcome (ages 3+)!

What is a “Salon”?
Salon (gathering)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation. These gatherings often consciously followed Horace's definition of the aims of poetry, "either to please or to educate" (Latin: aut delectare aut prodesse). Salons in the tradition of the French literary and philosophical movements of the 17th and 18th centuries were carried on until as recently as the 1920s in urban settings.
Bring the kids and come share in the festivities. Learn about our plans for a Masquerade Party coming in 2020.
