  • New Folk: Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem 7:30pm to 12:42pm @ Pruis Hall, Ball State University
Cost: $5 to $22 (see below)

Wicked grooves, sublime lead singing, great harmonies, sparkling original songs, and a deep repertoire that spans 200 years of American music. That's Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem, four people who share an irresistible chemistry on stage. Don't miss your chance to see them live at Pruis Hall this Thursday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are just $17 (in advance) and $5 for youth & BSU students. BSU faculty/staff buy one adult, get one free.

Rani Arbo & daisy mayhem is an unusually gleeful string band that celebrates both tradition and improvisation and that stumps the categorizers. (Are they an agnostic gospel band? A homeopathic bluegrass band? Are they crazy?).

The Boston Globe described it as "neo old-timey with cosmopolitan splashes of contemporary pop and jazz." It's an exuberant mix of musical idioms, held together by superb musicianship, impeccable taste, and the band's charismatic vocals. A stage show dips into country blues, vintage swing, modern songwriter fare, and Appalachian fiddle tunes and songs. It's a bracing fusion: listen to Arbo deliver Bessie Jones' version of "O Death" accompanied by fat, bluesy guitar solos and a groove that owes allegiance to the Meters, and you'll see. This is a band that picks up what's lying around "from tin cans to traditional music" and creates something new.

Click here to listen to tracks from their Big Old Life CD or here to visit the event page.

General Admission: $17 (advance)/$22 (door); $5 youth (18 & under) & BSU students. BSU faculty/staff buy one adult, get a second free.

  • Scott H. Biram 9pm to 12:42pm @ The Lafayette Brewing Company 622 Main Street, Lafayette, IN 47901

    Sunday June 19th, 2011
    Show starts at 9:00pm
    $10 in ADV $12 DOS call 765-742-2591
    A Mom&Pop Production

Most one-man bands are one-trick ponies. One riff, one sound, one gimmick, one bucket, whatever. Not Scott H. Biram. The man can and will throw down some feral, amped-up Delta blues just as easily as a stone cold country weeper that'll get the girls all dewy-eyed with faith and desire, or even a heavy metal field hollerwith the emphasis on holler. He can and will hold an audience rapt when he sings from the bottom of his boots about what it takes to get saved and how he'll end up blowing the deal.

Austin TX's self-proclaimed Dirty Old One-Man Band's third album for Bloodshot is profane and tender, alluring and frightening, and while such intensely polarizing forces would tear a lesser man apart, Scott appears to revel in the tug of war. With his '59 Gibson hollow body, mouth harp and electrified stomp board, his muddied water gospel is sly enough to charm the devil, and the hip shake boogie irresistible enough to get the Man upstairs to come down and share a bottle of the brown with him.

Performed, recorded and produced by Scott hisself, with the notable exception of the rave up 'I Feel So Good' done with blues punk duo the Black Diamond Heavies, Something's Wrong/Lost Forever is a record rife with testifying and torment. The grungy strut of 'Time Flies' and the Waylon-worthy lament in 'Still Drunk, Still Crazy, Still Blue' shows that real pathos lurks beneath the brim of Scott's trucker cap, while the two-step rant of 'Judgment Day' has him at his wide-eyed best. Check out the way he draws a line in piss and whiskey from the sweaty heaviness of the Delta to dudes throwing devil horns at a metal concert in 'Hard Time,' or the eerie, on-his-knees lament sung with maximum distortion on 'Go Down Ol' Hannah.' Just him and his maker.

A compulsive tourer, a Scott H. Biram sermon/concert/throwdown is not hard to find. Take heed, though, one dose and youll want to drink out of the same well that he has. Scott H. Biram is not a one-man band, but Scott H. Biram is a band thats one man.

THE MANTRAS (Jam Band, Progressive Rock, Fusion): The Mantras' music is a high-energy collaborative of funk-rock, electronica, metal, and fusion that will shake your knees and rattle your toes. Comprised of guitarist Keith Allen, drummer Justin Loew, keyboard player Justin W. Powell, bassist Brian Tyndall and percussionist Brent Vaughn; the band unified their musical vision in 2005 and has continued to hone their sonic direction and precision show by show. The Mantras continue to impress their peers and win over new fans at every turn with their instrumental prowess, solid lyrics, and unending drive to put on an amazing show every night!
Hailing from Greensboro, North Carolina, the band has been playing to ever-increasing sold out crowds in their home state during 2011, and are experiencing rapid growth into new markets throughout the South, Midwest and North East. In 2011 alone, The Mantras and their members have shared the stage in double-bills and direct support with Umphrey's McGee, Eoto, George Clinton and P-Funk, Kyle Hollingsworth Band, Papadosio, The Werks, Perpetual Groove, Zoogma, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, and many more.

FRESH HOPS: (Progressive, Jam Band, Experimental) Fresh Hops is a 8-piece band from the Tri-Town Area of North West Indiana. After three years of being together, their sound continues to evolve, as the fans and family continue to grow. Fresh Hops has created a love for the "live" show, incorporating the concept of "having fun" as the main idea. Each show is different, consisting of a mixture of creative originals, and catchy/crafty instrumental cover songs. Fresh Hops puts the emphasis on real music while blending their influences into something brand new. The band celebrates the rich history of each instrument playing bluegrass/classical songs through the violin, classic soul/jazz with the tenor sax, and heavy metal with distorted guitars. Somewhere along the way all the elements combine to create a truly unforgettable experience.

GLOSTIK WILLY: (Funk driven Jams) "Glostik Willy is a diverse 3-piece band straight out of Indiana, making a statement on the scene. With Jameson Bradford on guitar, Buddha Aguilar on bass, and Ralf Mowf on drums, this band is unstoppable. This progressive infused funk rock band is sure to make heads turn everywhere they go.

    Outdoor Art Gallery:
As we love to do, we are having an outdoor art gallery. Voir Art de Fletcher will be sponsoring this years’ gallery. We will be showcasing artists from all over the midwest and several of our own local talents will be there! So come, listen, see, feel, touch & check out what our midwest artists have to offer!

    Festival/Venue Décor:
Decor around the campgrounds will be done by Neural Patterns, Rays of Gnarly Sunshine, Angie Nauman Art and a handful of other local Midwest artists.

    Kid Korner:
Activities for children of all ages are being organized & planned for this event. Activities will go on throughout the entire weekend for 3 hour periods of time. Those times will be posted closer to the event date.

    Life-Size Games:
We have put together a small collection of games that can be played by yourself or a group of people just about anywhere. The fun thing about these games is that they are life size. So make sure to bring tennis shoes and be ready to get dirty with the rest of us!
