Brooklyn Rider is multi-faceted group of innovative young string musicians known for their creativity and collaborations that invite audiences into a shared experience. They have performed at venues all over the world and next Thursday they'll perform at Sursa Hall. Be there when they take the stage at 7:30 p.m. February 25.

Born out of a desire to to use the rich medium of the string quartet as a vehicle for borderless communication, Brooklyn Rider are well-versed in the classics, but have worked on cross-cultural and cross-genre projects. Their repertoire includes a wide variety of music and explores new music with world-music zest. All of the musicians have enjoyed diverse musical careers that have intersected with each other over the years. They draw inspiration from the array of cultures and artistic energy found in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City, a place they call home.

East Central Indiana Youth Symphony Orchestra plays several kinds of classical music and other things. The group, directed by Doctor Kristin Turner, will perform its winter concert at Sursa.

The Muncie Symphony Orchestra holds a yearly competition for young musicians in the region. Two divisions – the Junior and the Senior- provide the opportunity to select two winners: a younger player and a more seasoned player. A singularly unique ensemble, the Rastrelli Cello Quartet has been thrilling audiences with their renderings of non-traditional programming since 2002. Kira Kraftzoff - founder and artistic director, Kirill Timofeev, Misha Degtjareff and Sergio Drabkin formed the ensemble with a mission to perform music "between the genres," and their widely varied programs mix comfortably works by Bach, Saint-Saens and Tchaikovsky with that of George Gershwin, Dave Brubeck and Leroy Anderson. The name of the Quartet is taken from the eighteenth-century architect Bartholomew Rastrelli, who designed the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the home city of three of the four Quartet members. The Rastrelli Quartet currently has five recordings (Rastrelli, Volumes 1-5) on the Solo Musica, TonArt and Manchester labels, as well as a 2008 release with music by Piazzolla entitled "Cello in Buenos-Aires." In 2009, the Rastrelli Quartet's CD "Cello in Classic" was nominated for a Russian Grammy and was given a second prize award.

Join the University Singers in a Cabaret concert in Sursa Hall on January 27.  This concert, under the direction of Alan Alder, celebrates the day Indiana Governor Evan Bayh recognized the ensemble as “Indiana’s Official Goodwill Ambassadors” in 1994. In April, experience the University Singers on their home stage at Emens Auditorium as they present the 49^th annual Spectacular.

The School of Music’s all-student orchestra performs music from all genres and time periods, providing students with an intense and relevant orchestral experience.  On January 31, the winners of the Graduate Solo/Concerto Competition will be featured with the orchestra.  The Undergraduate Solo/Concerto Competition winners will perform with the orchestra on February 28.  In April, the orchestra can be heard playing with the Ball State Opera Theatre in a production of L’elisir d’amore by Gaetano Donizetti.

Ball State’s Jazz Ensembles kick off the New Year with a rousing evening of jazz favorites for this Tom Shah Annual Memorial Jazz Scholarship Award Concert on February 6.  Next up, the Ensembles perform with the winners of the Dimensions in Jazz High School Bands competition on March 2 in Emens Auditorium.  The Ensembles go out with a bang on April 10 with a special guest artist.
