Local resident and recent Ball State graduate Jerry Hannah will exhibit paintings and drawings in a one man show. Hannah had his Senior Thesis Show "Search for Life" at the gallery in July of 2012. An opening reception will be held during First Thursday from 5-8pm. The opening is free and open to the public and will provide those attending the opportunity to meet and visit with the artist.

When asked about his upcoming exhibit, Mr. Hannah explained, "When putting together a show many considerations come to mind and this show takes a step back from what is considered traditional and focus on the art itself instead of how the entire body of work fits together. The art shown varies with aspects of landscape, portraiture and abstract expressionism.  Some of this work has been exhibited here before and other pieces have never been publicly displayed. Some of this work is older and one painting has just been recently completed.  Some of this work is based on my love of astronomy and others are reflections of social issues.  Instead of being about tradition, this show is all about the art."

Jessica Summers remembers her mother painting domestic scenes of their rural Muncie home, often depicted at night, which had “an unusual sense of tension created by dramatic lighting.” Fast-forward to 2013, and the daughter has become the painter of dramatic domestic scenes while the mother has moved from the living room into her personal jewelry studio. Similarities abound: Jan McCune was a high school art teacher. Jessica was a high school art teacher before returning to get her MFA (Master of Fine Arts) in painting. McCune holds a BFA/MA in painting. Mother and daughter feel they have a lot in common as artists, despite the differences in media and approach. “I have inherited her love for the mark of the artist, surface and texture…I seem to keep unconsciously using similar lighting and subject matter,” Summers notes. “Her paintings were also very colorful and painted quite thick – similar to mine.” 

McCune has been named an “Indiana Artisan,” for her personal designs in pendants. This year she ventured into creating bracelets after receiving an Indiana Arts Commission grant. The grant allowed McCune to purchase needed tools and supplies, and she set out to fabricate 15 cuff or link bracelets. First, working primarily in copper, and then switching to silver, McCune had to learn blacksmithing skills that weren’t required of flat pendants. Heated to make it more malleable, the metal is then quenched in water and hammered into shape over a mandrel. Consumed with a new art form, McCune kept working. The goal of fifteen became sixty, many of which will be on display in the downtown gallery.

The two artists will exhibit together, for the first time, at Gordy Fine Art and Framing for the month of June.  An opening reception will be held on Thursday, June 6, 2013, from 5 to 8 PM. Each will each speak about their art; McCune at 6 PM and Summers at 6:15.

Referring to their many similarities as artists, Summers concludes, “Just like my mom talks about her love for design, I am finding that it is the construction of the image that interests me more than anything. None of this is necessarily intentional. It just keeps happening.” She concludes, “It’s in my blood.”

The Nook Gallery at Gordy’s will feature painter Autumn Bussen for June. She is a recent graduate of Ball State University with a degree in Painting and Drawing and the recipient of the annual Small Exhibit award given by Gordy Fine Art & Framing each year at the BSU Student Show.

Rose Court is pleased to present the work of Melissa Cummings for the Month of June.

Melissa Cummings began as a self-taught artist.  At the age of 16, she was painting commissioned murals and many local signs in her home town of Farmland, Indiana.  She has been the recipient of several honors including winning two scholastic art awards from the State of Indiana. 

These earlier experiences using oil based mediums led her into art studies at Ball State University.  “People have been my most inspiring subject matter.  The eyes are my greatest emphasis when I am working on a portrait painting.”  Melissa enjoys art as a personal therapy.  She was busy with other life demands for more than a decade and is re-emerging with a new love for surrealistic abstracts in oil.  “This change in genre is allowing me to make creations based from my own emotions.  It is raw energy.”  Melissa Cummings is eclectic in her work.  She enjoys using a variety of mediums and styles.  Her portrait work still captures the most accolades from viewers.  Please enjoy her artwork created with charcoal, lithograph, oil, colored pencil, ink and graphite starting June 6th First Thursday at Rose Court.

The featured artist for July at the Artist Within will be Joe Flynn. Joe features several new paintings in his always-popular style of grouped canvases as well as single pieces.  The title of his show is “Love is all you need” and is expressed throughout the work on display through July 29th. We hope you will make plans to attend, meet the artist, listen to live music by the Michael Martin Band, and enjoy light refreshments.

Gallery 308 opens its 9th Annual Members’ Exhibition with a free reception from

5 to 8pm on Wednesday, July 3. The exhibit features more than 50 works in various mediums including paintings, drawings, fiber art, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. In its nine-year history, approximately 25-30 artists participate in the annual exhibition.

The members show is one of Gallery 308’s most popular exhibits and is mounted every summer, showcasing the artistic talents of the gallery’s patrons and this year to support the gallery’s Public Art Initiative.  This year all exhibition fees and donations from works sold will help fund the artist fees and costs of installation for the public art sculpture to be given to the City of Muncie.

The all-original artwork by current Gallery members will be on display through July 26. The gallery is open Friday from 3-7pm and Saturdays   from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free.

"Negotiating the Curve" – The art of Cheryl Anne Lorance

Voluptuous bronze and glass sculptures and fantastical egg tempera paintings will be the featured exhibit for the month of July at Gordy Fine Art and Framing Co. in downtown Muncie. on the first Wednesday of the month, July 3rd. "The downtown galleries agreed to leave the 4th of July to its traditional use as the celebration of our country’s birth, and we would celebrate our new exhibits opening the night prior," offered Braydee Euliss , gallery director at GFAF. "We want to encourage attendance, and believe Wednesday, the 3rd, will be more conducive to that."

Exhibitor Cheryl Anne Lorance is a Ball State University graduate who just moved back to her home state after living in Santa Fe for 16 years. Her precise egg tempera paintings contain fantastical elements with a sense of mystery. The artist admits to a strong influence by Magical Realism and the new Objectivity, which seats magical elements in a mundane or normal setting. Lorance packs a powerful exhibition with her biomorphic, undulating sculptures that bulge and twist beneath delightful patinas.  Some hang from cables, adding an element of oppression. Beautiful, and yet unidentifiable, Lorance brings playfulness to the work, causing viewers to ask, "What is it? A flower? A bug, or a baby?"

The active Lorance is currently part of a public art project in Indianapolis called, "Go Ahead and Play," sponsored by Women’s Funds of Indiana. This event will feature twenty pianos that have been transformed by local artists and displayed in public places in Indianapolis throughout August. Lorance has also been invited to begin teaching at the Indianapolis Art Center this summer.

The reception hours are 5 to 8 PM. The award-winning artist will speak about her work, and answer questions at 6 PM. The public is invited to attend.

Participating artists will be using social media to spread the word about this show and its theme. The first two exhibits, "Robots" and "Birds and Words", were a huge success and we are certain you will enjoy this one too. The ArtCamp Show featuring the talents of more than 45 young artists opens at Gallery 308 August 1. Many of the cities young artists have been busy this summer participating in an Art Camp sponsored by Art Mart and The Artist Within. The campers took a trip "Under the Sea: Exploring the Oceans through Art".  Held at The Artist Within, this summer saw six weeks of clay camps and one week of fine arts camp.

Karen Fisher, owner of Art Mart and longtime ArtCamp instructor, said her students aged 5 to 13 created traditional Japanese fish prints, a school of origami fish, 3-D papier-mâché puffer fish, and a mural of sea creatures. Artist Within owner Bob Hartley stated, "It is really fun watching them grow and to follow their artistic growth. The excitement the kids bring is what keeps this old art teacher eager for the return of Summer ArtCamps."

The campers have drawn, painted, and potted during their underwater exploration.  Fisher added, "The highpoint for each of the young artists is the thrill of seeing their artistic creations professionally hung and lit in a gallery."  The culmination of their art camp experience will be an exhibit at Gallery 308 with the First Thursday reception.   The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

The gallery is open Friday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free. The ArtCamp Show continues through August 3.

Faulkner Watercolors August Exhibit  - Jim Faulkner is one of the best known artists of east central Indiana, and his interests and reputation as a watercolor painter extend throughout the state and beyond. But it is Indiana that has received most of the artist's attention for the past two decades. Since 1990, Faulkner has been accepted twenty times into the famed Hoosier Salon exhibits, winning six awards. In the same period, ten painting have been juried into Watercolor Society of Indiana exhibits, earning seven awards. Minnetrista Annual and Hoosier Heritage have provided three awards each, with a Merit Award in 2013 at the latter. Faulkner has taught numerous workshops, and also taught in the Ball State University Art Dept., where he first met Brian and Genny Gordy, as students. Brian credits his former professor with instilling the beauty of transparent watercolors into his art career. Faulkner received both his own undergraduate and master's degrees at BSU.

Faulkner will exhibit new paintings that were done in the fall, winter and spring seasons of 2012-13. A lover of his chosen medium, the artist offers, "As always, I was primarily interested in wonderful images all around me, and my futile attempts to capture that image – but with the added beauty of watercolor paint on rag paper." Opening with a First Thursday reception on August 1, 2013, the show continues through the end of the month. The artist will speak about his work and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Interesting notes about this Muncie artist include the fact that Faulkner was an abstract painter for 15 years before returning to his roots of realist watercolors. He was also a dedicated sculptor, and taught Brian and Genny – and many others, including nephew, Steve Clark, the art of bronze casting in the 1970's. He and his wife, Eleanor, live on a small farmstead outside Muncie with various cats and dogs. Jim's studio is in their restored barn.

Corrinne LeNeave Installation in Nook Gallery - Alexandra Corrinne LeNeave will exhibit installation pieces in the Nook gallery at Gordy's. A recent graduate of Ball State University, she holds a BFA in Video Art and Electronic Media. Her work examines object ownership as it flows between generations in a family.

Rose Court is pleased to host the homeschooled artists of our community to display their artwork on August 1st from 5 to 8 PM for the Muncie "First Thursday" Arts Walk in downtown Muncie.

This will be the first time the work of the community wide homeschooling artists has been on public display.

Come see a sampling of the students' portfolios.  Some of the work was completed in a class; some was completed independently.  The students work encompasses every medium from watercolor to oils to ceramics and everything in between.

Botanically and Naturally Inclined – The work of Cindy Norrick Turner
Cindy Norrick Turner’s style of painting is very colorful and very bold and this is apparent to even the most casual observer. Cindy is a native of Delaware County and a graduate of BSU with a degree in graphic design. Since her first class taken from local watercolorist Brian Gordy, Turner has exhibited regularly throughout central Indiana in her own shows as well as in juried competitions.  She continues to take additional classes and workshops in watercolor techniques and has admirers throughout the world due to her exposure on Facebook and Flickr. Color Ocean/Color Land – The work of Suzanne Lambert
"I live in a sea of color, the waves roll in and thru and all around." - Suzanne Lambert.

Guests to the upcoming First Thursday art opening at Gordy Fine Art and Framing are in for an eye-satisfying festival of color. Suzanne Lambert is well-known for mixed media canvases with stunning arrangements of poured, dripped and sprayed paints. The former dancer seems to transfer dance movements into her work; colors flow and are embellished with staccato beats, swirls and arabesques. Titles give hints to the artist’s meaning, or the place of inspiration. That could be the Ohio River Valley or the French countryside; Lambert splits her residence/studio between two continents. “My intention is to visually convey, through color, tone and composition, the feeling and essence of places I live and visit, the people I experience.” She continues, “Energy of life moves me; I wish to bring this feeling to the viewer, to touch them and, perhaps, to lift the soul…” Lambert will fill the main gallery with new works, and will speak about her work during the opening reception on First Thursday at 6:15 PM. Reception hours are 5 to 8 PM.

iGarden – The work of Genny Gordy
"I work in a garden of colors. My eyes dart from flower to fruit to bug, but my images are always about the intense saturation of color I find, especially the infrequent blue." - Genny Gordy.

Genny Gordy will hang an exhibit of photos and watercolors in the Nook gallery during the month of September. Titled “iGarden”, the show exposes the acre of land in town that Gordy and husband, Brian, somewhat wildly maintain and that Genny’s iPhone camera readily captures. Fruit trees and grape vines share space with raised bed and traditional vegetable gardens. Flowers and herbs fill every view. Artworks dot the landscape – a Kim Anderson bird bath, Matt Lynch sculpture, an Amish fertility sign, painted by a friend.  A cabin, possibly 80 years old, serves as Genny’s garden shed. A blue desk in the shade is used as a garden bench and is the background for many photos. One hundred year-old trees edge the plot, and a dry stream bed runs through, serving only during heavy rains. A small bridge connects upper and lower yards where wildlife - from deer to heron to flying squirrel - has visited through the years. “It is where I reconnect with the ground beneath my feet and work out thoughts and muscles,” offers Genny. “Every day, I step out my back door into the wonder of the gardens and return renewed. These images are my attempt to share that colorful magic with others.”  Gordy will speak about her work at 6:30 PM on First Thursday.

Both exhibits will remain on display through September 30, 2013, and may be viewed during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturdays, 9 to 3, or by appointment.

The offices of DeFur Voran and Raymond James  are partnering to transform the lobby of Munseetown Square into a gallery, featuring the works of local artists David Dale, Brian Gordy, Jim Faulkner, Eric Ernstberger, and many others.

Bette Graham
Muncie native Bette Graham is known for her landscapes and popular images of cats.  For over sixty years, she has been active in the local arts community. Proficient in several art media, Graham's primary focus throughout her lengthy career has been printmaking--both wood block and linoleum.

Jim Faulkner
Faulkner taught and practiced contemporary abstract art while teaching at Ball State for thirteen years. Near the end of his college teaching in 1977, Faulkner returned to his background of realistic watercolor and sculpture.  There, he found a search for the essence of what he believes and feels to be truth.  He paints full time at the country homestead he shares with his wife, Eleanor, and various cats and dogs.  His studio is a restored barn.  He has received numerous awards throughout his painting career and is one of the most collected and well-known artists of east-central Indiana.

Brian Gordy
Brian Gordy taught art in the public schools, the university level and privately for over 20 years.  He exhibits throughout the United States and has earned numerous awards for his watercolors and charcoal drawings. Mr. Gordy, with his wife Genny and son Ben, own and operate Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company.

Barbara LaRue King
After graduating from Ball State with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, LaRue King worked as a graphic designer at Indiana Glass Company where she rejuvenated the company’s packaging and marketing.  Her own line of design-on-glassware was distributed nationally through department store chains. Working at Hallmark’s Ensemble Company division, she designed product lines for Franklin Covey, the United States Post Office, and other high-profile Ensemble clients.  Most recently, she has been employed at Hallmark’s Kansas City headquarters designing album and giftwrap lines in Hallmark’s Gifts Studio. 

Eric Ernstberger
Eric Ernstberger, a Muncie resident, is a native to extreme southern Indiana’s un-glaciated landscape which stands in bold contrast to the flat un-forested terrain of the state’s better known midsection.  His love for painting, drawing and the arts was influenced by the physical attributes of this unique landscape and further evolved by the profession he has chosen to pursue for the last three decades. Ernstberger is a registered site architect and founding partner of Rundell Ernstberger Associates, the region’s largest urban design and site architectural firm with offices in Muncie, Indianapolis, and Louisville.  His vivid expressionistic paintings in acrylic on paper are spontaneous, free flowing images of landscapes, objects, people, and events, offering intense abstraction or new perspectives on familiar subjects.

David Dale
Artist and designer David Dale was born in Muncie in 1940.  He attended the Fort Wayne Art School and Museum on scholarship where he studied figure drawing, portraiture and landscape painting.  The founder of David Dale Designs, Dale also taught by invitation, Complex Interiors and Professional Practices in the School of Fine Art at Ball State. Dale paints landscapes in pastel and oil, both outdoors and in his studio.  He also designs and handcrafts signature picture frames to complement his paintings.  His paintings hang in corporate, museum, private and public collections.

Rose Court is pleased to feature the art work of Muncie's noted architect Anthony J. "Tony" Costello, FAIA.  You may have heard or read about Tony regarding his work in architecture or his mission trips to Haiti, but you may not know that he is also an award winning artist.

Tony has always done sketching as part of his architectural practice but in 2010 decided to submit sketches to Architectural Record's Napkin Sketch competition and continued to submit his sketches each year after.  He won Runner-Up/Professional Award in 2011 and 2012. He is the only person to win awards in two of the three contests held since 2010.  The impetus for this contest is that architects have historically sketched ideas on napkins while having a few drinks with clients or colleagues.  Napkin sketching involves using a 5" x 5"plain white cocktail napkin and sketching on it with a pen.

This will be Tony's first public exhibit of his napkin sketches. Sketches and watercolors from his travels, including Italy, England, Istanbul, Haiti, New York City, and Boston, will be featured.  Napkin sketches and sketchbook sketches will be available for sale.

Euliss will exhibit encaustic (hot wax) paintings as well as a series of necklaces. Gallery Manager at Gordy Fine Art & Framing and a Ball State graduate, Euliss holds a BFA in Sculpture. Her vast 3-D background, coupled with an innate preoccupation with repurposing, informs her continued use of non-traditional and found media.

MFD Fire Department Museum
The Muncie Fire Department Museum will be open for tours. The museum includes artifacts, equipment and pictures that cover the history of the fire department for the city of Muncie.

This two–man show titled “Conversations and After/Life” is a collection of fine art photography.  This exhibit features two award-winning artists, Alfredo Marin Carle and Ryan Sparrow.  Both artists are faculty in the Department of Journalism at Ball State University teaching visual journalism classes.  Marin-Carle and Sparrow earned the gallery exhibit when they captured Best of Show and first place awards respectively from Gallery’s 308’s Paperchaser 2012 juried exhibition.  Marin-Carle took top honors for his self-portrait, “Introspection”. 

Gordy Fine Art and Framing
Style show by Pat Nelson and Ann Baddeley Keister entitled: “Putting it All Together:  Invention, Appropriation, Transformation, Elaboration,” The show will feature wearable garments designed and sewn by Ann using recycled Japanese kimono fabrics. Pat’s jewelry pieces of mixed metals, vitreous enamel, stones and some fabric were  made as the garments were under construction, “allowing for much give and take” between the two artists during the process.”  Runway shows will be at 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM with limited seating.

Discover amazing art and artifacts inside Carnegie Library. Enjoy the building’s classical architecture including a stained glass dome, historical maps, and a commanding original painting by J. Ottis Adams of Wheeling Pike as it Appeared in 1891.
Also on display is a collection of vases, sculptures, carved treasures, and more from Taiwan, China, Korea, Japan, Kazakhstan, and South Korea. These treasures were gifts to the City of Muncie during economic development visits and have been archived and documented by Muncie Public Library. These items are displayed periodically for all to discover and enjoy!

TEMPORAL SYNAPSE at PROJECTiONE
PROJECTiONE is a design collaborative led by artists Adam Buente and Kyle Perry, both residents of Muncie, IN. Founded in 2009.  Their most recent project “Temporal Synapse” was designed to inhabit 6 elevator lobbies in the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital on Wishard Health’s newest campus. More than 18 months in the making, “Temporal Synapse” is due to be installed before the end of October. Eager to share their most recent endeavor with Muncie, Buente and Perry will open their shop located at 612 S. Elm Street. to the public.  Several of the completed “Temporal Synapse” walls will be operational and on exhibit for the first time alongside past projects and prototypes. "I Rounded Life’s Corner and You Caught My Eye" - The photography and digital artistry of Mark Norman Murphy

The First Thursday opening reception will be held from 5pm to 8pm. Light refreshments will be served and there will be an opportunity to meet the artist.

A Pentax K-1000 provided Mark Norman Murphy with his first opportunity to explore the world of 35mm photography.  Since that time, his view through the lens has delighted many with sweeping landscapes, unusual views of "ordinary" objects and places, and an inspirational vision of the world around us.

Along the way, Mark's photography has garnered multiple awards and also the happy occasion of publication in Life magazine and other national publications.

Recently the iPhone has become his newest camera of choice.  With his iPhone always at hand, it now provides the option of engaging his artistic eye in combination with the many applications available to create a masterpiece.

Taking advantage of many miles travelled across the USA, Mark feels that his photography is surely a gift from God:  "God created the view.  I just get the privilege of capturing it for others to enjoy."

11th Annual Auction Preview Show

Gallery 308 opens its 11th Annual Auction Preview Show with a free reception from 5pm to 8 pm on First Thursday.  The Auction Preview Show is a sneak peek at the art for sale at the 11th Annual Wine Dinner and Art Auction hosted by Vera Mae’s Bistro on November 15.  The combination dinner and silent art auction is mounted every November as an opportunity for areas artists to show off their artistic talents and to raise funds for A.R. F. and Gallery 308.

Bidding will begin on the original artwork at the preview show and be on display through November 14 at the gallery. All auction items may be previewed online at http://www.gallery308.org.  Gallery 308 will be open special hours to preview the art auction items on Friday, November 8, 3:00 – 7:00pm; Saturday November  9, 12:30pm – 5:30pm; and  Wednesday & Thursday November 13 & 14 from  12:30- 5:00pm.  Admission is free.

New Work of 5

Through years of art business – first as an art supply store, more recently as an art gallery and frame shop – Brian and Genny Gordy have enjoyed the company of dozens of Ball State art students. Both graduates of that program, the Gordy’s found many student applicants were readily trained to work in their downtown business. Some of these employees graduated to become professional artists, art professors or game developers. For their November art exhibit, the Gordy’s will feature five of these former co-workers who have continued to collaborate and create, exhibiting from Chicago to New Zealand, Los Angeles to Bologna. Sometimes solo, often in collaboration, these men weave music, live performance, film, installations and other artisans into their bigger-than-life exhibitions.

Steve Lacy, Matt Lynch, George Shumar, Jr. and Chris Vorhees may be remembered for their late 1990’s downtown art gallery, “Sandbox,” or their rolling art gallery, “Object D’ART,” a fully-functioning mini gallery on wheels, pulled by a 1973 Dodge Dart. Filled with juried works of art, the project toured each quadrant of the country and produced a bound “Tour Diary 1998-99” of events, stopping points and stats, such as:  “Actual Total Stops Nationwide: 87. East Coast: 48. Avg. Viewers per Day: 48.” Joined by Nat Russell, the D’ART project was just a starting point for the ongoing collaborative art produced by this very active group of creative thinkers, art and music makers.

New technologies have enabled these five artists to reach ever-wider audiences, in their trademark “more is more” fashion, with more than a sprinkling of humor. Examples include a Styrofoam car created by Vorhees for installation in a tree at a Phish concert, and a huge wooden skate bowl, installed it at a Chicago art venue, and then moved to Los Angeles.

Steve Lacy placed a mock TV studio in a Chicago storefront, complete with a 1960’s variety show set, and then filmed it all as performance art to be broadcast through his Academy Records and Actual Size websites.

Vorhees, organizer of the event, owns Theoretical Woodworking, a custom design and build company. He is an installation specialist, working with artists, museums and architects.

Skateboarder, installation artist, surfboard and poster-painter, Nat Russell is famous for his hand-scrawled posters, and served as artist-in-residence at Facebook in Menlo Park, CA, and art venues in Australia, Canada and Berkeley.

Lynch, an art professor at the University of Cincinnati, works under the name, SIMPARCH, creating site-specific and responsive, large-scale artworks that strive to encourage communal interaction and social exchange. He claims an infatuation with “absurdly functional forms.”

Shumar, who studied metalsmithing at Ball State, discovered quilting after moving to Vermont and will exhibit “Hot Weather Quilt 2013,” made from jersey mesh, mosquito mesh, key rings and balloons.                         

The opening reception for “New Work” will be held Thursday, November 7, 2013 from 5 to 8 PM at the downtown Gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the artists will be introduced at 6:15 PM. The exhibit will continue through November 30th, and may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3.

Photographer Tony Morris

Anthony (Tony) Morris was born in 1969 in Fort Wayne, IN to parents Richard and Norma Morris. He is a graduate of Eastbrook High School and attended Ball State University. Tony currently lives in Muncie, IN and works in Daleville, IN at First Merchants Corporation. Tony is married to Nicole and has two daughters; Gabriella, 16 and Mackenzie, 9. He belongs to the Muncie Camera Club and has had the privilege to judge on its panel. He has also entered a couple of online contests and received honorable mention. His most recent entry was for the Indiana State Fair in 2013 where he had three pictures displayed in their gallery. 

Tony is an artist who mainly works with close up and macro photography. He loves exploring the concepts of nature in a simple way using minimal equipment and has also started to explore other subjects as well. His photos establish a link between nature’s reality and that imagined by its viewer.  Tony tries to increase the dynamic between audience and photographer by objectifying different emotions and investigating the duality that develops through different interpretations.  Many of his prints are smaller, to draw you into the photo.  The realistic sense of the objects comes through the photographs.  In his words, "As a very amateur photographer, I am pleased to have been given this opportunity to showcase my work."

The Paintings of Casey Parmerlee
Local artist Casey Parmerlee has been very interested in spatial, geometric landscapes and feels that this has guided her most popular work over the past few years. Because of this, Casey has really focused in on what she wants the viewer to take away from her paintings.

She has chosen to refine her color palette and work with non-traditional mediums on canvas, such as charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencils, and using gesso as a medium instead of a ground and sizing as one might typically use it.

Casey states that the overall look and feel of the work in this exhibit is more refined than her previous work of the same subject matter. This body of work tends to conjure feelings of grandness and sophistication with its rigid lines and frame work, but still feels organic and tied to nature. It is this balance of geometry with the organic that she finds interesting.

Finding Their Voices

The Gallery 308 December show, “Finding Their Voices”, showcases the talents of 15 artists from Ball State University’s School of Art.  The exhibit features works of art in both 2D and 3D media in a variety of mediums including painting, photography, glass, drawing, metals, ceramics, and sculpture. The opening reception will be held from 5-8pm. The exhibit is open through December 27. The gallery is open Fridays from 3-7pm and Saturdays from 12:30 – 5:00pm.

Annual Salon Show

Two dozen area artists will hang works for the holidays at Gordy Fine Art and Framing. Opening with a reception on Thursday, December 5th, the exhibit will continue through January 31, 2014 and includes oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings, original prints, pottery, jewelry, photographs and sculpture pieces.

“We’ve added a few artists to our award-winning lineup this year, which helps keep the event fresh and interesting,” offers gallery director, Braydee Euliss. “The works range from traditional oil paintings of landscapes and florals to more modern and abstract pieces and figurative works.” She continues, “We encourage guests to ask questions. Art openings definitely have a learning component, and we all love to talk about art.”

A salon show differs from typical exhibits by allowing pieces to be removed from the show at time of sale. They are replaced by other pieces or the exhibit is rearranged. This allows patrons to consider art for holiday decorating or gift giving, concepts that also support the artists, who appreciate selling their work before year’s end.

The artists in attendance will be introduced and a short talk about the show will be given at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

The staff and students of Ivy Tech’s School of Education are excited to announce that we will be hosting a “Parent’s Night Out” at the Fisher Building from 5:30 to 8:00pm on December 5th. We have an exciting “Winter Wonderland” themed night planned for children whose parents are attending First Thursday events. This event was created because we have a genuine concern for the availability of proper childcare during the First Thursday events. We also understand that many parents in the surrounding area could benefit from a fun night out, all while supporting the community.

Safe activities and a snack will be provided for children while their parents enjoy Muncie’s First Thursday festivities. Registration is open to the first 75 children ages 4-12. The Work of Heather Haviland and Melissa Cummings

Heather Haviland has a BFA with an emphasis on photography from Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. With her love for graphic design and painting, she incorporates these elements into her artwork. Her inspiration comes from an interest in melding folklore and mythology with fantasy and surreal portraiture. Her background as a floral designer has also influenced the meaning, structure, and vibrant colors seen in her work. This quote from Joseph Campbell best describes what Heather strives to capture in her photographs, “I don’t believe people are looking for the meaning of life as much as they are looking for the experience of being alive.” Her past work has been described as “fantastical & imaginative” challenging the viewer to explore content reminiscent of fairy stories from a darker age.

A self-taught artist,  Melissa Cummings has been the recipient of several honors including winning two scholastic art awards from the State of Indiana.   “People have been my most inspiring subject matter.  The eyes are my greatest emphasis when I am working on a portrait painting.”  Sought after for her portraits Melissa is re-emerging with a new love for surrealistic abstracts in oil.  “This change in genre is allowing me to make creations based from my own emotions.  It is raw energy.”  Her work is eclectic and she enjoys using a variety of mediums and styles.

Fifth Annual Sofielsa Harmon Art Show

Sofielsa is a kid growing up in an outsider art world. Her naive interpretations are guided by the artists who visit 111 Arts Gallery throughout the year.

Annual Salon Show

Two dozen area artists will hang works for the holidays at Gordy Fine Art and Framing, including oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, drawings, original prints, pottery, jewelry, photographs and sculpture pieces. The salon show will be on display through January 31, 2014.

“We’ve added a few artists to our award-winning lineup this year, which helps keep the event fresh and interesting,” offers gallery director, Braydee Euliss. “The works range from traditional oil paintings of landscapes and florals to more modern and abstract pieces and figurative works.” She continues, “We encourage guests to ask questions. Art openings definitely have a learning component, and we all love to talk about art.”

A salon show differs from typical exhibits by allowing pieces to be removed from the show at time of sale. They are replaced by other pieces or the exhibit is rearranged. This allows patrons to consider art for holiday decorating or gift giving, concepts that also support the artists, who appreciate selling their work before year’s end.

Artists in the Salon Show include Kim and Scott Anderson, Sue Beach, Carol Burt, David Dale, Eric Ernstberger, Braydee Euliss, Jim Faulkner, Charlene George, Brian and Genny Gordy, Corey Hagelberg, David and Sarojini Johnson, Suzanne Lambert, Paul Laseau, Cheryl Anne Lorance, Shonet Martin, Jan McCune, Alan Patrick, John Peterson, Marty Price, Margie Prim, Kyle Rees, Carol Strockwasson and Lynette Waters.

A reception for the artists will be held during the monthly First Thursday art event on Thursday, January 2, 2014, from 5 to 8 PM. The reception will also serve as a farewell party for Ben Gordy, General Manager, who is pursuing a new degree in Indianapolis. A short talk at 6:30 will focus on the various works on exhibit, representing over two dozen local artists who work in oils, watercolors, acrylics, photography, printmaking, mixed media, jewelry and pottery. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

The exhibit may also be viewed during normal business hours: Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturday, 9 to 3, or by appointment.

Adventitious Biography

Holly Lay is a 2013 fine arts graduate of Ball State University where her focus was photography. Here are a few words from the artist about her exhibition, entitled "Adventitious Biography" at The Heorot:

"The body of work I am displaying is a collection of pieces I have done throughout my entire artist career. It is in many ways a biography of what I have done, where I have come, and how far I am going. It is a collection of photography, mixed media, and painting. I have worked in many different media and want to display some of my favorite works from the past years and of recent. My most recent endeavor has been a collection of glitch photographs and video. I started this project with glitching some images of Marilyn Monroe I have obtained over time and scanned them to digital format. On the computer I then opened the image as a text document and inserted quotes by her, the end result was the images you see in this presentation. This was the beginning to my work with glitch. I also have included many photographs I have taken documenting my life and family life as well as digital manipulations of representations of things I collect or of myself. Another part of this show is the paintings I have done over a long period of time. Many being friends that I would dress up for a photo shoot and then paint them in the costume and extreme make up they were wearing. This show is a display of many different works from many different series I have or am still working on."

Ball State School of Art Collection

Rose Court is pleased to present an exhibition of drawings, paintings, and glass by student workers in the School of Art at Ball State University. Artists Adam Dick, Sarah Fischer, Alexa Litchfield, Megan Saylor, James Schwab, Kelsey Selch, and Claire Thomas will be displaying their work, coordinated by Assistant Professor Barbara Giorgio. Exercises in Space

Casey Parmerlee writes about her exhibition: "I find very often in the art making process I correct myself over and over. Sometimes I correct multiple times in one painting, however most of the time corrections are most obviously seen over the course of several paintings. With each mark made comes a slew of questions ranging from examining what the next mark might be, where it might be in relation to the previous mark and in relation to where it falls on the canvas, what color, how thick or thin the paint might be, or if I need to paint over or move the previous mark. In making new work I am constantly trying to find solutions aesthetically to better articulate a message or an emotion to my viewer.

"I have been very interested in spacial, geometric landscapes and over the past few years this has been some of my most popular work. Because of this I have really focused in on what I want the viewer to take away from my paintings.

"I have chosen to refine my color pallet and work with non-traditional mediums on canvas such as charcoal, conte crayon, colored pencils, and using gesso as a medium instead of a ground and sizing as one might typically use it.

"The overall look and feel of this work is more refined than my previous work of the same subject matter. This body of work tends to conjure feelings of grandness and sophistication with its rigid lines and frame work, but still feels organic and tied to nature. It is this balance of geometry with the organic that I find interesting."

Becca Melbert is a senior at Ball State University studying drawing and planning to graduate in the spring with a fine arts degree. Here are a few words from Rebecca about her exhibition entitled 'Wo' at Valhalla: "As time goes on, I have become more aware of myself, where I fit in as I grow into a young adult. My work is about the areas of comfortable being and uncomfortable situations in their ties specifically with womanhood. My drawings explore this concept on an individual level. The drawings also deal with domesticity, youth, sexuality, and art history. Large format and gestural lines support the importance of process in my work. All though most the drawings are mixed media, charcoal is the foundation of all of each one. It is important to note that the women in my drawings are most frequently not real but are manifestations of myself as well as my imagination."
