    The Beginnings 2026 exhibition showcases student artwork completed in the past academic year in School of Art First-Year Foundations courses. We are pleased to offer awards in four categories (2D, 3D, 4D, and Drawing) and a Best in Show Award that is generously sponsored by Art Mart in the Village. Join us for the reception and awards ceremony during BSU Family Weekend, Friday, September 11 from 4 to 6pm.

    Foundations provides all first-year students in the studio art, animation, graphic design, and art education programs with the fundamental concepts of art and design through an intensive year-long studio-based experience in AFA 101 Drawing Studio, ADS 101 2D Foundations, ADS 102 3D Foundations, ADS 103 4D Foundations. This interdisciplinary program emphasizes critical thinking and making skills, conceptual development, process, collaboration, and experimentation. Students are introduced to the School of Art’s learning approaches and gain a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary practices in art and design.

    ArtsWalk Returns to DWNTWN
    October 1 with New AR Features and DWNTWN IDOL Finale

    On Thursday, October 1, downtown Muncie will turn its sidewalks over to the artists, makers, and performers who shape its creative identity. ArtsWalk is a special edition of First Thursday that will run from 5–8 p.m. and give the community a chance to meet the people behind the work. Attendees can browse handmade goods, watch live performances, and explore augmented reality glimpses of the buildings that once stood along the same streets.

    This year's ArtsWalk features an expanded Echoes of Muncie augmented reality experience, created by Ball State University's IDIA Lab students and faculty. Using their phones, guests can step back in time and see former downtown buildings in their original glory. New this year, the Rivoli Theatre and Ball Stores buildings join the Wysor Building, Wysor Grand Opera House, and Delaware County Courthouse in the immersive experience, made possible with support from the Ball Brothers Foundation.

    Art lovers won’t want to miss YART at Canan Commons, a “yard sale for art” featuring one-of-a-kind, handmade finds from local makers and artisans, all priced under $40. Local and visiting artisans will also showcase their work in various media at Cornerstone, Gordy, and other galleries throughout downtown.

    The evening builds to the DWNTWN IDOL Finale at 6 p.m. on the Canan Commons stage, where 20 finalists from two rounds of competition will sing for the crown, a $500 cash prize, and more. The crowd gets a say too — attendees can cast a live People's Choice vote for their favorite performer while a judging panel determines the overall winner. The finale is sponsored by the City of Muncie, with support for the stage provided by Ball State University. 

    Fan-favorite Soup Crawl returns as well, organized by PrimeTrust FCU and benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. Guests can purchase a ticket to sample a variety of incredible soups from local restaurants as they make their way through downtown. Food trucks will round out the food and drink offerings alongside downtown's local eateries. Because ArtsWalk takes place within the Downtown Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA), guests can enjoy their favorite beverages from participating restaurants and vendors as they explore the event.

    "ArtsWalk is one of our favorite nights of the year because it puts the creativity of this community on full display," said Amanda Holmquist, Executive Director of Muncie Downtown Development Partnership. “This event gives people a reason to come check out how much talent is here in Muncie. You don't have to leave town to find good art and fun experiences.”

    Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will hold a party for Landscape an exhibit of paintings by Carol Strock Wasson and photographs by her son Daniel Wasson. This is the first time their artistic work has been shown together.  “For decades,” say Carol and Daniel, “our family has worked with the landscape—designing it, caring for it, and living among it. Through painting and photography, we continue that relationship, exploring the changing light, quiet beauty, and enduring character of the places we call home. Refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend.

    Echoes of Muncie: Augmented Reality Architectural Heritage Tour

    Discover the history of downtown Muncie in augmented reality!  Use your mobile device as a window into the past to learn about several historic buildings, including the Ball Stores, RIvoli Theatre, the Wysor Grand Opera House, and the former Delaware County Courthouse, and more - experienced as virtual 3D reconstructions on their former sites. This project is made possible by Muncie Downtown Development and the Ball Brothers Foundation. Both apps will be available through links here on October 1st. 

    Muncie Downtown Development will have QR code signs at all 5 building locations to download for iPhone or Android phones. There will also be a supporting display at the CAP Walnut Studio at 306 South Walnut.

    Designed as an evolving series of AR artworks across Muncie, artist John Fillwalk and the IDIA Lab team at Ball State University created this augmented reality installation for Dave’s Alley that enables visitors to use their iPhone to participate in a virtual site-specific art experience, employing animated 3D objects and immersive sound. A QR code will be onsite in the alley to download the experience. This project is made possible by Muncie Downtown Development and the Ball Brothers Foundation. Download here

    There's lots to see at MadJax during ArtsWalk! Arrangements by Ellen Leigh will continue to be on display in the TOOLSONG Gallery, giving visitors another opportunity to experience this unique exhibition. We’re also excited to welcome Pretty Little Café as they debut MadJax’s brand-new drink cart turned entrepreneur launchpad. It’s the first chance to experience this new addition to MadJax, grab a handcrafted coffee drink, and get a taste of what Pretty Little Café has to offer as they prepare to open their storefront in Albany, Indiana. Main Street will be closed between MadJax and Cornerstone Center for the Arts, creating even more space for First Thursday festivities with live music, food truck vendors, and activities hosted by the East Central Neighborhood Association, including pre-gutted pumpkins for kids to carve or paint, games, candy, toys, books, and more. Head to the MadJax Courtyard from 6:30–8:00 p.m. for live music from Colin Judson and the Judtones. Guardian Brewing Company will be open with half-price appetizers.

    The Songwriter Sessions is a monthly event where local and regional songwriters share the art of original music and the stories behind the songs. The event is held in conjunction with Muncie's First Thursday. It runs from 8-10pm at RoHo's. The showcase takes place after the main First Thursday events, as an after party where you can unwind and listen to awesome live music performed by the creators.
