The Artist Within will feature the third social network exhibit, titled "Indiana".

Participating artists will be using social media to spread the word about this show and its theme. The first two exhibits, "Robots" and "Birds and Words", were a huge success and we are certain you will enjoy this one too. Local artists in all mediums will be exhibiting and selling work that they have created to explore the theme of Indiana. Come see what the Hoosier state means to these artists of all ages.

The ArtCamp Show featuring the talents of more than 45 young artists opens at Gallery 308 August 1. Many of the cities young artists have been busy this summer participating in an Art Camp sponsored by Art Mart and The Artist Within. The campers took a trip "Under the Sea: Exploring the Oceans through Art".  Held at The Artist Within, this summer saw six weeks of clay camps and one week of fine arts camp.

Karen Fisher, owner of Art Mart and longtime ArtCamp instructor, said her students aged 5 to 13 created traditional Japanese fish prints, a school of origami fish, 3-D papier-mâché puffer fish, and a mural of sea creatures. Artist Within owner Bob Hartley stated, "It is really fun watching them grow and to follow their artistic growth. The excitement the kids bring is what keeps this old art teacher eager for the return of Summer ArtCamps."

The campers have drawn, painted, and potted during their underwater exploration.  Fisher added, "The highpoint for each of the young artists is the thrill of seeing their artistic creations professionally hung and lit in a gallery."  The culmination of their art camp experience will be an exhibit at Gallery 308 with the First Thursday reception.   The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

The gallery is open Friday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm and Saturday from 12:30 – 5:00pm.  Admission is free. The ArtCamp Show continues through August 3.

Gallery 308, located at 308 East Main in downtown Muncie,  is a 501(c)(3) community art gallery which exists to provide exhibition space for artists, encourage innovative work and serve the community as a cultural and educational resource. Faulkner Watercolors August Exhibit  - Jim Faulkner is one of the best known artists of east central Indiana, and his interests and reputation as a watercolor painter extend throughout the state and beyond. But it is Indiana that has received most of the artist's attention for the past two decades. Since 1990, Faulkner has been accepted twenty times into the famed Hoosier Salon exhibits, winning six awards. In the same period, ten painting have been juried into Watercolor Society of Indiana exhibits, earning seven awards. Minnetrista Annual and Hoosier Heritage have provided three awards each, with a Merit Award in 2013 at the latter. Faulkner has taught numerous workshops, and also taught in the Ball State University Art Dept., where he first met Brian and Genny Gordy, as students. Brian credits his former professor with instilling the beauty of transparent watercolors into his art career. Faulkner received both his own undergraduate and master's degrees at BSU.

Faulkner will exhibit new paintings that were done in the fall, winter and spring seasons of 2012-13. A lover of his chosen medium, the artist offers, "As always, I was primarily interested in wonderful images all around me, and my futile attempts to capture that image – but with the added beauty of watercolor paint on rag paper." Opening with a First Thursday reception on August 1, 2013, the show continues through the end of the month. The artist will speak about his work and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Interesting notes about this Muncie artist include the fact that Faulkner was an abstract painter for 15 years before returning to his roots of realist watercolors. He was also a dedicated sculptor, and taught Brian and Genny – and many others, including nephew, Steve Clark, the art of bronze casting in the 1970's. He and his wife, Eleanor, live on a small farmstead outside Muncie with various cats and dogs. Jim's studio is in their restored barn.

Corrinne LeNeave Installation in Nook Gallery - Alexandra Corrinne LeNeave will exhibit installation pieces in the Nook gallery at Gordy's. A recent graduate of Ball State University, she holds a BFA in Video Art and Electronic Media. Her work examines object ownership as it flows between generations in a family.

Rose Court is pleased to host the homeschooled artists of our community to display their artwork on August 1st from 5 to 8 PM for the Muncie "First Thursday" Arts Walk in downtown Muncie.

This will be the first time the work of the community wide homeschooling artists has been on public display.

Come see a sampling of the students' portfolios.  Some of the work was completed in a class; some was completed independently.  The students work encompasses every medium from watercolor to oils to ceramics and everything in between.

"East Central Indiana has a large homeschooling community.  We are a diverse group, representing different cultures, religions, political leanings and even educational ideologies and methodologies, but we all homeschool.  We welcome other homeschoolers to connect with our community via YahooGroups and Facebook.

Selections from the Advanced Drawing Classes

April at the Artist Within will feature drawings created during this semester in the various Ball State Advanced Drawing Classes of Scott Anderson and Heidi Jensen.  The students will have work in collage and mixed media, as well as traditional mediums. The exhibit will remain on display April 2nd through April 30th during regular business hours. Many of the pieces will for sale. Please make plans to attend the First Thursday opening April 2nd from 5-8pm to meet some of the Student Artists and visit with local artists and fellow arts supporters.

Asian Infusion

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on April 2, 2015, for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon and Aidan Crosby. The show entitled “Asian Infusion” is an exploration into art forms originating in traditional East Asian culture infused with a modern perspective.

Leon and Aidan, a father son duo, are excited to share their individual and collaborative efforts for the first time together. The collection includes mixed media paintings featuring modern influences such as graffiti and pop art utilizing unconventional styling.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display throughout the month of April.

Leon, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone, was born in Toledo, Ohio and started his journey in art at a young age. His biggest inspirations come from Japanese art, American Graffiti, and comic book graphics. He has received both formal and informal instruction from the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo and regularly displays and sells his art throughout the Muncie community. In addition to teaching at Cornerstone, Leon has volunteered his time at Sutton Elementary and has several private lesson students.

At 10 years old, Aidan has a passion for art unlike many.  He began showing interest in art at 4 years of age. Aidan suffered from a chronic illness as a child, which is what led him to begin classes in visual arts at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. This was a reprieve for him from ongoing illness and it soon became something he could look forward to. A few years later he showed more interest and got involved with classes at Ball State University. Aidan is quite inspired by many art styles, but is highly attracted to the Japanese animation styles especially those displayed in Pokemon. Aidan likes to create in general, often playing video games that allow him to design his own characters and his own worlds. He is an energetic and imaginative child and it shows when he is playing with other children as well when he creates art.

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Ball State University Office of Victim Services will host an art installation called The Clothesline Project during the First Thursday art walk. The Clothesline Project is a collaborative art installation featuring T-shirts designed by students to raise awareness about consent. The installation will be on display on the fence next to the Downtown Development Office at 120 West Charles Street from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. Peer victim advocates will be on site to talk about the artwork and refreshments will be provided.

Twistable Perceptions from Inside the Corn Crib

A Muncie native, Terri Gillentine graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. The artist also creates artworks and performances under the name of Lucky Ace Everlast.  The April exhibition is a body of work that records impressions of wave patterns that morph into microcosmic organisms.

SKETCH: The Art of Study

Brian and Genny Gordy met in art class at Ball State University. Years later, they purchased what is now Gordy Fine Art & Framing in downtown Muncie. Braydee Euliss, also a BSU art graduate joined them in 2004. The GFAF team may be small, but their collective passion for building a community of art appreciators couldn't be bigger. Monthly rotating exhibits and artist talks raise awareness and increase the accessibility of various art forms in their gallery. In an effort to pursue this passion more thoroughly, they have designed an entire exhibit around the idea of studying art.

For the month of April, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will focus on the practice and process of creating art. The exhibit, SKETCH: The Art of Study is a group show featuring an array of preparatory work that represents what sketching is and can be for artists who work in both 2 and 3 dimensions with all types of materials. Thirteen participating artists will be introduced at the First Thursday opening reception on April 2, 2015, at 6:15 PM.  The public is encouraged to attend and ask questions about the exhibit and the different methods employed by each to create the various pieces.

Exhibiting artists include Scott Anderson, Hannah Barnes, Josh Cogeshall, Eric Ernstberger, Brian Gordy, David Johnson, Paul Laseau, Alan Patrick, Mary Ann Rahe, Kristen Reeves, Jacinda Russell, Janice Shimizu, and Juli Thorson. While each artist uses sketching techniques, patrons will see both similarities and great differences in the final works of art. A sketching station will be set up for patrons to try their hands at drawing a likeness.  Art teachers will be on hand to encourage and assist participants.

Work by Carol Burt and East Washington Academy art students. Our purpose in creating these paintings was to focus on watercolor techniques that allowed us to create a center of interest by concentrating on the space surrounding the focal point.

Work by Gabrielle Graber, BSU BFA, transitioning to Alfred University for MFA. “My work deals with the anxiety of ideologies that I have internalized from society’s issues of health, gender, and sexuality. Through this understanding each figure is an auto-biographical reference that connects my inner thoughts into a large scale reality.”

Mun(See)
Mun(See) is a photographic interpretation of Muncie's first 150 years through the components that make it a resonant culture. Composed by Ball State University's Landscape Architecture ‘Design with Photography’ elective, this exhibition encompasses the sights and textures of what it means to be a member of the Muncie community.

Side Investigations
Work by Eric Lawler, BSU 3rd year Architecture student. “This project investigates the immaterial side of architecture. It defines immateriality as specific thoughts, feelings, ideas, drawings, images, concepts, discussions, or debates that are remotely architectural. It dwells on their potential and is determined to project their possibility.”

Design Build Interventions at MML
Work by BSU 4th year Architecture students under instructor Tim Gray. A group of ten fourth year architecture students will be creating four separate site specific installations at the Muncie makes Lab. The projects offer a range of sculptural installations using a range of re-purposed materials and dealing with themes such as reflection, material and light.
