The Scene @ the Cup: Ep 7 - BGPJ & The StereoFidelics
7:00pm to 12:42pm @
The Cup
1606 W. University Ave
Every Thursday at The Cup, a recent episode of "The Scene" from Indiana Public Radio will be played. "The Scene" highlights the best live local music from Central Indiana. Swing by, have a great cup of coffee, and enjoy some rad tunes!
This episode:
BGPJ - Two-piece blues/rock band from Marion, IN.
The StereoFidelics - "Imagine you’re back in time enjoying the groove and virtuosity of 70’s art-rock band, then hurled decades forward, colliding with the energy and intensity of today’s indie rock scene. There’s unexpectedly powerful jazzy female vocals intertwined with a strong, satin-smooth male voice. Thumping synth basslines and popping, funky drumbeats drive the skillfully intricate guitar playing and explosions of electric violin string-shredding. Reflecting their influences of past and present (including Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, the Talking Heads, Arcade Fire, and the White Stripes), the StereoFidelics avoid performing with loops, computers, and digital effects in favor of the more organic approach of using Moog Taurus pedals, scat vocal solos, and multi-instrumentalism. You see, the fast-fingered guitar player (Chris Padgett) keeps the basslines pounding through a one-octave floor keyboard, the tiny female vocalist (Melissa McGinley) is also the drummer; he sings too, and she plays violin. They perform with a natural passion and synchronicity that not only dispels any association with the herky-jerky one-man-band cliché, but post-performance, leaves their audience sympathetically exhausted and dripping with sweat."

The Scene @ the Cup: Ep 8 - Molehill & Late Nite Reading

Every Thursday at The Cup, a recent episode of "The Scene" from Indiana Public Radio will be played. "The Scene" highlights the best live local music from Central Indiana. Swing by, have a great cup of coffee, and enjoy some rad tunes!
This episode:
Molehill - "Since 2009 Molehill has had over 150 performances throughout the Midwest and East Coast and along the way has opened for major and indie label acts Bret Michaels, Blind Melon, Royal Bliss, The Elms, and Jesse Malin. In 2010-12 Molehill showcased at the Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA and was featured twice in the Red Eye (Chicago Tribune Pop Publication) along with features in numerous local print and online publications. 2011 continued with tours throughout the midwest and east coast and an invitation to perform at CBS Studio Chicago where they received high praise from a celebrity panel including owner of the Metro (Chicago) Joe Shanahan, US99 Morning Show Host Lisa Dent and Chicago R&B stalwart Frayne Lewis. On March 6th, 2012 Molehill’s new album ‘Equinox’ was released. The release was coupled with a sold out show in Chicago. ‘Equinox’ was produced by Manny Sanchez and Molehill."
Late Nite Reading - "Surfacing from suburbia Indiana, pop-punk band Late Nite Reading is quickly climbing up the industry ladder and doesn’t show signs of slowing down. After two EP releases and ready for a third, the band has done nothing but spread their name and tour non-stop throughout 2012 & 2013. For being a band just out of high school, they have already shared the stage with an impressive roster of bands such as All Time Low, Cartel, The Summer Set, and Taking Back Sunday."

Art of Injustice exhibition opening
6:30pm to 9:00pm @
The Cup
1608 W. University Ave
The “Art of Injustice” antiwar art exhibit opens at The Cup in the Village on Friday, February 7th and is on display through March 9th. The showing wants to bridge the gulf between a military and a civilian experience of war by featuring two war veteran artists and two civilian contributors.
The opening night event will occur between 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. at The Cup this Friday. It will begin with music and will include presentations of the exhibit’s artists. The night will end with a drum circle.
The two veterans featured in the show are art professionals who use their war experience as inspiration for their art, as well as for their strong belief in the need to fight war only when it is morally justifiable to do so.
The surprisingly effective war awareness art of Ehren Tool, a ceramist, explores the decoration of an object of everyday use, the cup, to signify the death, destructiveness and futility of war. Ehren, a Gulf War veteran, believes that, for some, “the cups have been a place to start a conversation about the unspeakable.”
Aaron Hughes, Chair of the Art Committee for the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, is a nationally known artist-activist who prefers to capture experiences of beauty, poetry, and connection, to reclaim his sense of self. His life was radically transformed by the dehumanization and oppression he saw after being sent to Iraq by the National Guard.
Jake Ressler, a Ball State University senior with a focus on a career in human rights work, is featured prominently, as well. His art – both his collage work and his poetry – is extraordinarily powerful and compelling in its depiction of war and its excesses.
Finally, George Wolfe, a renowned saxophone musician, and a former director of the BSU Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, is included for his antiwar poetry and his exploration of world music as a protest against war.
See the exhibit’s allied website at: http://artofinjustice.org/.
The intended audience for the show and the website includes veterans, but the goal is also to reach the uninitiated, to educate and explain. This as an excellent opportunity to increase understanding about the long-term effects of war, with the art and website creating platforms for community reflection and dialogue.

- Cuplets 6:00pm to 8:00pm @ The Cup dine-in area 1608 W. University Ave
This free monthly event for live poetry reading at The Cup will pair flow with joe, rhythm and brews, beats and beans, and result in many a steamed stanza. I'll be your Host and I have only one rule for Cuplets: Buy something from The Cup, each and every one of you, no exceptions. :) They've got espresso, coffee, chai, tea, soda, juice, and yummy food too, from bagels to sandwiches and more. That's right, support your scene with a few bucks to the venue. Don't worry about tipping me, but I'm sure the baristas would appreciate the support too. Let's keep them busy!
I CAN'T WAIT TO HEAR YOUR POETRY!
Cuplets is not curated, everyone is welcome to read. I know y'all are nice and will match the length of your reading to the attendance level so everyone has a chance to read. Read new work or old, rhyme or don't. If it's poetry to you, it's poetry at Cuplets!
Many thanks to the owner of The Cup, Martin George, for inviting me to create this monthly event! And a big ol' thank you to Lucian Cruor for the poetry/café word pairings above! :)
