8 Days in Cuba

Gallery 308 opens 8 DAYS IN CUBA “exhibition with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 3.  The exhibit features the photographic journey of 15 Ball State journalism students and four journalism faculty members on an eight-day trip to Cuba in March 2015.

Ryan Sparrow, the exhibition coordinator and three other BSU journalism teachers accompanied the students on the trip including Chris Flook, Robin Blom and Hans Kellogg.  Sparrow said, “The students went on a trip of the lifetime. The idea was to travel to Cuba and get a sense of its people, culture and history.   What they found was a county ready to forget its past conflicts with the United States but not quite aware of what that might mean.”  He added, “What we got from the trip was the chance to interact with the people of this warm and inviting country.  There is a sense of optimism about the future of Cuba and a county on the brink of change.”

The spring break trip saw the travelers visit Havana, a former coffee plantation and the town of Trinidad.   The exhibit will feature a mix of 25 photographs from both the faculty and the students of landscapes, old cars and of interesting faces of people they met on their trip.

The exhibit will be on display during the First Thursday gallery opening on December 3 and by appointment through December 30. Visitors may call or text 765-289-8575 to set an appointment.    Admission is free.
