Black Scare Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States

"This upcoming Wednesday, we will continue our study session of “Black Scare/Red Scare: Theorizing Capitalist Racism in the United States” by Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly for Black Study Group. This book discusses the long history of anti-Black and anti-communist/radical repression that has been integral in domestic and foreign US policies and governance, and how racism and racial hierarchy are at the heart of capitalist exploitation and US society.

We will be reading a condensed version of chapter 5 entitled “Wall Street Imperialism and Expropriation Abroad.” This chapter explains how the profit motives of Wall Street Imperialism extended beyond the U.S. border to exploit and expropriate the Caribbean and Africa. Dr. Charisse Burden-Stelly connects the economic exploitation, racial violence, and surveillance of Black people in the imperial core to the militaristic violence, resource theft, and U.S. occupation of Black people abroad. Join us on November 11th as we read through this chapter together while engaging in a robust discussion along the way.

This event will be available in-person and on zoom!
