Aerosol and Old Lace – Series Seven

The Artist Within will feature new art by local visual artist, poet, and artivist Deborah Gindhart Dragoo. Layers of vibrant colours, textures, and vintage plastic lace motifs create this new stunning series of canvas brilliance. There will be also be PINK earrings designed specifically for The Little Red Door of Delaware County / ECI. After reading the courageous cancer journey of Muncie's own Sonya Paul, the artist chooses to share her art gifts. These special earrings will be on sale for $10 per pair with all proceeds to benefit The Little Red Door for their breast cancer awareness programs.

Conversations About Nature Through Art and Poetry

A two-woman exhibit featuring artists Carol Blakney and Mary Ann Rahe opens First Thursday at Gallery 308 on September 4.  “CONVERSATIONS ABOUT NATURE through art and poetry” features prints by Carol Blakney, ceramics by Mary Ann Rahe and poetry by Mike Brockley, Karen Hiday, and Jeffery Owen Pearson. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held from 5 to 8pm on First Thursday.

Blakney explains the exhibit, “It’s a collection of the observations, inspirations, and memories of local artists in a collaborative exhibit of prints, ceramics, and poetry, inspired by our local wildlife and environment.“ Blakney stated she is interested in individuality, intelligence, and metaphor in nature.  She created a series of Abobe Artistic Filter prints of the wide variety of creatures she has discovered in her Muncie garden.

Mary Ann Rahe uses ceramic forms and surfaces to explore themes of nature. She added, “For me, art inspired by nature engages the observer in both formal issues of design and imaginative interpretation. In addition, invited poets will contribute verse related to themes of nature. “

According to the two artists, “NATURE” is full of powerful and often contradictory meanings.  We recognize the sounds and landscapes and familiar creatures of our local environment as part of what “home” is.  The more welcoming we are of nature in all its forms, the more creative and healthy our home will be.  A place where in parks and gardens and wild places we can still learn about form and color, life and death, and how we are in the universe”

A Muncie native, Rahe attended St. Louis University and earned B.A. and M.A. degrees in ceramics from Ball State University.  During the nineteen-eighties, she was resident potter at Sinclair Shops, Hartford City, Indiana.  She taught ceramics at Yorktown High School during most of the nineties and has taught for the Art Department and School of Extended Education at BSU for fourteen years.

Blakney received her BFA in Fine Arts and Art Education from the University of Massachusetts in 1982.  She taught art and reading in a public school resource room until she was hired as the first project manager for the Oxford Guide to Classical Subject in the Arts, published in 1993.  She has traveled extensively to photograph and illustrate the landscapes and wildlife of Turkey, England, Ireland, Mexico and the eastern United States.  The daughter of missionaries, she was born into civil unrest that toppled the apartheid government of Rhodesia.  She has remained engaged in social and environmental activism in the United States.

Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly “First Thursday” exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 ArtsWalk exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com. Here and There:  Recent Paintings by Alan Patrick

When Alan Patrick needs to look for new subject matter for his oil paintings, he doesn’t travel far. He and wife, Cindy, live the artist’s life on their small farm just outside Albany, IN. Well-tended gardens, a fish pond,  greenhouse and separate studio provide just about everything an artist could hope for, in the way of subject matter. Often, the award-winning Patrick paints flowers and still life scenes in the comfort of his studio. But sometimes, he just has to get out and tromp around in the woods to find his next inspiration. Nearby streams and a river provide both compelling scenes and a strong reflective light that bounces off tree trunks and leaves. Many artists paint beautiful stream scenes. What sets Patrick’s paintings apart has to be his technique of layers and layers of translucent colors that give a depth and brilliance even cameras can’t convey.

“I am interested in common-place subjects. If they are important, it is because of the formal elements such as line, shape and color. I do hope that they strike a chord with people, but the meaning is in the drawing and brushwork rather than the subject matter,” the prolific painter offers. He continues, “I can pass by a place a hundred times and that place is just ordinary. Then, one day, it’s magic. It has color, form, light and drama. It has suddenly become a wonderful place to look at. I know there is a painting there.”

He continues, “I photograph places and then return to my studio and think about the subject. What feeling does it evoke? What forms and colors work in the composition? I usually do compositional studies in charcoal first, working out the structure of line and value. Then I think about color. I spend a lot of time on a painting before I ever touch a brush.”

The public is invited to view the exhibit during the First Thursday’s Arts Walk on September 4, 2014 from 5 to 8 PM. The artist will give a short talk and answer questions about his work beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served. Graduate students from Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning, along with architecture professors Gernot Riether and Andrew Wit, designed and built an innovative pavilion during their summer coursework.  Conceived of as a “traveling pavilion for the city,” the pavilion’s initial rendition and location served as a test of concept, structural ideas and durability.  This open house exhibition shows the design process (research into computational design and fabrication methods, drawings, models, detail studies), and end result (photographs and component pieces).  Students will also be present to demonstrate the fabrication of tensegrity units.  The pavilion is currently located on the outskirts of Muncie, Indiana, standing in stark contrast to lush natural surroundings. Perched between a lake and a forest, the stretched lycra tensegrity structure appears to float as it lightly grazes the earth.

Doodles, Down Time Patterns

Rose Court is pleased to host artist Cynthia McHone and her exhibit entitled:  'Doodles, Down Time Patterns'  for September's First Thursday.   Cynthia's primary medium is pen and ink. Here is what Cynthia has to say about her work:

"When I moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Muncie, Indiana I knew that life would bring me new opportunities. I had no idea that in my leisure/down time I would find relaxation and enjoyment through random doodling. Albuquerque averages 310 days of sunshine a year and since Muncie's weather patterns are quite different I found myself appreciating indoor activities a great deal more. One day, while watching the evening news I picked up a sketch book and a few color pens and began to draw.

"The dictionary describes a doodle as a simple drawing that is unconsciously created while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied. Often done to relieve boredom, I found that these repetitive patterns were relaxing and somewhat addictive.

"This exhibit celebrates the rhythms, geometries, textures, and abstract landscapes created under the influences/echoes of Gustav Klimt, William Morris, Owen Jones, and appliqué quilting. I hope you enjoy these little works of art to find that these abstract harmonies lessen the stresses of your day as they have done for me. "

The Artist Within

The Artist Within will exhibit a retrospective look at the artwork of former BSU Art professor Bob Lundy. Mr. Lundy taught photography and graphic design during the late sixties.  Former student of Lundy and owner of the Artist Within, Bob Hartley, has fond memories of his class. “Attention to detail and a commitment to fine craftsmanship” are two of the qualities Hartley recalls being stressed by the young professor and always visible in Lundy’s artwork.

After a career that included teaching at Earhlam College, University of Akron and Eastern Kentucky, as well as being a tech-rep for Nikon Camera, Mr. Lundy retired to Florida to pursue his passion of underwater photography and whimsical wood carving. His love of the water led him to earn the Coast Guard designation of “Captain” in 1984 and hence began signing his wood carvings “Captain Bob”. Bob Lundy lives in Muncie with his daughter Starr Manning.

“Soul Sauce…a look at the work of Bob Lundy” will be the featured show throughout February at the Artist Within.  An opening reception will be First Thursday February 5th from 5-8pm.

Pop Art Presidents

“Pop Art Presidents” showcasing the talents of artist Melissa Adams opens at Gallery 308 on February 5. The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held First Thursday, from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

The February exhibition is retrospective series of portraits of all 43 U.S. presidents painted in red, white and blue.    Artist Melissa Adams states, “I had this idea to paint the presidents in red white and blue. I didn't know if it had been done before, so I checked on google. I could not find anything quite like what I had in mind.”

Her exhibition was inspired by two things she loves, “I love portrait painting. I like painting with a limited palette. It is amazing what you can do with just a few colors. I love history.”   She added “The exhibition is intended to open a dialogue about our history. This is my attempt to make it current, to make it real in this day. History is so very important. Our presidents have led very colorful lives.”

Adams began painting at an early age, she says I am not sure why I stopped, but I did. Then about three years ago she started painting in earnest. Her preferred medium is acrylics, but she also paints in oils, watercolors and even sometimes coffee, whatever she can get her hands on. 

Before she began painting the series, Adams researched each president as extensively as she could, reading about their families, their wives and children. She said, “It helped me to paint them by knowing who they were outside of their political party. After 43, I don't know that I can recall all the details, but it was so interesting. Some everyone will recognize others I didn't even know by their portrait before I started this series. I love that I have learned so much and my hope that this series helps others to do the same.”  History buffs will also appreciate that Adams is also including a quote from each president under their portrait.

“Pop Art Presidents” exhibit continues through February 27. Muncie Makes Charrette // Redesign the Neighborhood
After inspiration from both Urban Planning and Architecture professors, sophomores Megan Clevenger and Samantha Wiser teamed up to plan an interdisciplinary charrette. The focus of the charrette was in the Maker's District, south of downtown, along Wisor street. The duo advertised within Ball State's College of Architecture and Planning for teams of architecture, planning, and landscape architecture students. The Martin Luther King Day charrette had a successful turnout of Graduate and Undergraduate students, representing all three majors, combined. The team tackled strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of the site while incorporating possible solutions to the underused space.

Sensory Soul Box
Prof Pam Harwood's Culture and Environment students each​​ created a box that holds and assembles selected images and cultural artifacts that tells a story of one’s place in the world. The boxed constructions allow the reader an escape to a miniature universe inspired by distant places and times, evoking conscious memories through the juxtaposition of objects and imagined allusions.

Catie Newell, Alibi Studio + Prof Tim Gray’s undergraduate architecture studio have done a site specific design build installation in MML.

Asian Infusion

Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on April 2, 2015, for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon and Aidan Crosby. The show entitled “Asian Infusion” is an exploration into art forms originating in traditional East Asian culture infused with a modern perspective.

Leon and Aidan, a father son duo, are excited to share their individual and collaborative efforts for the first time together. The collection includes mixed media paintings featuring modern influences such as graffiti and pop art utilizing unconventional styling.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display throughout the month of April.

Leon, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone, was born in Toledo, Ohio and started his journey in art at a young age. His biggest inspirations come from Japanese art, American Graffiti, and comic book graphics. He has received both formal and informal instruction from the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo and regularly displays and sells his art throughout the Muncie community. In addition to teaching at Cornerstone, Leon has volunteered his time at Sutton Elementary and has several private lesson students.

At 10 years old, Aidan has a passion for art unlike many.  He began showing interest in art at 4 years of age. Aidan suffered from a chronic illness as a child, which is what led him to begin classes in visual arts at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. This was a reprieve for him from ongoing illness and it soon became something he could look forward to. A few years later he showed more interest and got involved with classes at Ball State University. Aidan is quite inspired by many art styles, but is highly attracted to the Japanese animation styles especially those displayed in Pokemon. Aidan likes to create in general, often playing video games that allow him to design his own characters and his own worlds. He is an energetic and imaginative child and it shows when he is playing with other children as well when he creates art.

In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, the Ball State University Office of Victim Services will host an art installation called The Clothesline Project during the First Thursday art walk. The Clothesline Project is a collaborative art installation featuring T-shirts designed by students to raise awareness about consent. The installation will be on display on the fence next to the Downtown Development Office at 120 West Charles Street from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 2. Peer victim advocates will be on site to talk about the artwork and refreshments will be provided.

Twistable Perceptions from Inside the Corn Crib

A Muncie native, Terri Gillentine graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute. The artist also creates artworks and performances under the name of Lucky Ace Everlast.  The April exhibition is a body of work that records impressions of wave patterns that morph into microcosmic organisms.

SKETCH: The Art of Study

Brian and Genny Gordy met in art class at Ball State University. Years later, they purchased what is now Gordy Fine Art & Framing in downtown Muncie. Braydee Euliss, also a BSU art graduate joined them in 2004. The GFAF team may be small, but their collective passion for building a community of art appreciators couldn't be bigger. Monthly rotating exhibits and artist talks raise awareness and increase the accessibility of various art forms in their gallery. In an effort to pursue this passion more thoroughly, they have designed an entire exhibit around the idea of studying art.

For the month of April, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will focus on the practice and process of creating art. The exhibit, SKETCH: The Art of Study is a group show featuring an array of preparatory work that represents what sketching is and can be for artists who work in both 2 and 3 dimensions with all types of materials. Thirteen participating artists will be introduced at the First Thursday opening reception on April 2, 2015, at 6:15 PM.  The public is encouraged to attend and ask questions about the exhibit and the different methods employed by each to create the various pieces.

Exhibiting artists include Scott Anderson, Hannah Barnes, Josh Cogeshall, Eric Ernstberger, Brian Gordy, David Johnson, Paul Laseau, Alan Patrick, Mary Ann Rahe, Kristen Reeves, Jacinda Russell, Janice Shimizu, and Juli Thorson. While each artist uses sketching techniques, patrons will see both similarities and great differences in the final works of art. A sketching station will be set up for patrons to try their hands at drawing a likeness.  Art teachers will be on hand to encourage and assist participants.

Mun(See) is a photographic interpretation of Muncie's first 150 years through the components that make it a resonant culture. Composed by Ball State University's Landscape Architecture ‘Design with Photography’ elective, this exhibition encompasses the sights and textures of what it means to be a member of the Muncie community.

It defines immateriality as specific thoughts, feelings, ideas, drawings, images, concepts, discussions, or debates that are remotely architectural. It dwells on their potential and is determined to project their possibility.”

A group of ten fourth year architecture students will be creating four separate site specific installations at the Muncie makes Lab. The projects offer a range of sculptural installations using a range of re-purposed materials and dealing with themes such as reflection, material and light.

Art teachers Margie Frank, Britt Husman, and Helen Zacek bring together a showcase of art from their Advanced Art students for this First Thursday art show. The student advanced art show showcases the talent and variety from the advanced art students at Central High School.  This exhibit will remain up through the month of May with an opening reception will be held May 7th from 5-8pm.  Live music by Bryce Taylor and light refreshments will add to the evening’s festivities.

Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual

Drawing and paintings, step aside. Sculpture will take over the gallery at Gordy Fine Art & Framing for the month of May, thanks to Ball State University art instructor, Chet Geiselman. The artist describes himself as, “a creative problem solver, a collector and arranger of objects and information, a fabricator of visual forms, and a lifelong student of spiritual and human nature.” Bauhaus design has served as a beacon for his personal creations made of wood, steel and “recontextualized found objects.” Geiselman grew up in a small German farming community in southern Indiana. His grandfather was a blacksmith and his father and uncle were welders. Chet learned to weld and build things at a very young age, and eventually earned an MFA in Metalsmithing from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Guests to the January Salon Show at Gordy’s may recall a pair of framed wood sculptures by Geiselman. Neatly contained in deep white wood cases, undulating wood forms recall smooth-skinned knobby trees, or perhaps, sand dunes held in time. Each of Geiselman’s pieces suggests a formal relationship to the space it inhabits and alludes to the potential functionality of the objects that compose it. The full title of this exhibit is, “Minding the Gaps in the Foundation of the Sensual.”

The artist will speak briefly about his work and answer questions beginning at 6:15 PM during the opening reception on Thursday, May 7, 2015. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults. ​Darkness Discovered is an architectural installation that looks to explore the uncertainty that darkness holds on our spatial perception. Visitors are encouraged to slowly explore the essence of light added to the space by interacting. Flashlights are provided for experiencers to explore the light, darkness, shadow and reflections that the space has to discover.

Pop Art Presidents

The show entitled “Pop Art Presidents” is a collection of paintings by Missy Adams honoring the lives and history of the 43 presidents of the United States.

Missy Adams is a local artist who took her love of portrait painting and history to create a series of paintings celebrating the colorful personalities and interesting lives led by the nation’s presidents. The show was painted with the limited color palette of red, white, and blue and utilizes shading and layering to create depth representing each president’s own personality. Each painting features a corresponding quote from that president displayed under their portrait.

Adams describes painting as her passion, love, therapy, and her nightmare at times. She started painting at a young age and has been primarily self-taught. She has experimented with watercolor, acrylics, oil, gouache, and even coffee to paint on glass, cardboard, canvas, and paper to discover what works best. She describes her style as not realistic per se, attributing her ability to see things differently from others as her inspiration.

Kali Yuga

Gallery 308 will showcase the talents of abstract artist Hannah Barnes, with an exhibit entitled "Kali Yuga". The opening reception for the new exhibit will be held Thursday, September 3 from 5 to 8 p.m. The public is welcome.

Barnes said, "My inspiration for the exhibit is a reflection on a six week research trip to southern India that I took last summer. In Hindu cosmology, Kali Yuga is the name for the era the world is currently cycling through - the last of four in a cycle. It is marked by conflict, discord, and strife"

According to Barnes, she has been making abstract images since she was four years old.  She added, "A combination of my experience in India and the events of the last year inspired me to create a body of work that emphasizes the accumulation of patterns and structures marked by conflict, discord, transformation and degeneration."

Barnes is an Associate Professor of Painting at Ball State University. She creates work that draws on a familiar vocabulary of abstract forms and tropes to explore the nature of meaning within abstraction. Her work has been exhibited in such places as the Institute of Contemporary Art in Portland, Maine; the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Wroclaw, Poland; Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana, and Trestle Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. Barnes recently completed a residency at the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation in Cranberry Isles, Maine, and she was the recipient of a 2013 Full Fellowship to attend the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT.

Ms. Barnes received an MFA in Visual Art from Rutgers State University of New Jersey and a BFA in Painting from Maine College of Art. In 2008 she joined the School of Art at Ball State, where she teaches beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in painting and drawing, as well as undergraduate senior projects and graduate seminars in studio art practice.  Born in Massachusetts, Barnes resides and works in Indianapolis, IN.

According to Barnes, "My work engages the interplay of drawing and painting to explore ideas of structure and fragmentation, surface and depth, perception and illusion, and the indeterminacy of images. My recent work draws on the fragile and indexical qualities of watercolor to foreground touch, trace, mark, process, and impermanence."

Gallery 308, which provides space for local and regional artists with monthly "First Thursday" exhibits, is in its 14th year as a nonprofit art gallery.  For more information about the Gallery 308 exhibit opening, contact sherry@jackscamera.com. Interiority: New Paintings by Jessica Summers

Jessica Summers has been selected to exhibit for the month of September at Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company. Her oversized drawings and oil paintings command attention, as the viewer feels included in the scene, or just offstage. The artist explains, “I honor the tradition of artists representing the contemporary domestic interior and choose to use my suburban home as the subject and setting for my work.”

Beneath the exceptionally detailed surface, Summers’ pieces “explore modern relationships in which couples cohabitate but for numerous reasons rarely connect.”  Her use of dramatic lighting and sharp camera angles, along with eye contact to acknowledge the audience, brings intimacy into the these private spaces while the artist remains in control of what is revealed or concealed, undoubtedly leading her viewers to seek for more information in details, angles and shadows.

Summers holds a BFA in 2-Dimensional Studies and Art Education from Bowling Green University and an MFA from Bowling Green State University, where she is currently an adjunct professor in Fine Arts. The winner of numerous awards, Summers was invited by Ohio’s First Lady, Karen Kasich, to be the Fall Spotlight Artist at the Ohio Governor’s Residence, where she delivered an artist talk that was later televised. She has also had solo exhibitions at Durham Arts Council in Durham, North Carolina and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, West Virginia. Jessica has also participated in a number of invitational small group shows at Indiana University South Bend, University of Findlay in Ohio, and Portland ArtsPlace in Portland, Indiana, among others.

There will be an opening reception on Thursday, September 3, 2015 from 5 to 8 PM and the artist will speak about her work and answer questions, beginning at 6:15 PM. Light refreshments will be served, and the public is invited to attend. There will be art-related activities for both children and adults.

Muncie Public Library's UDo makerspace hosted a six week Google Maker Camp for the second year in a row. The purpose of maker camp is to help inspire and instruct young innovators, engineers, and artists. Our featured projects included felt finger puppets, cardboard guitars, circuits and LED's, and even a DIY terrarium.

College of Architecture and Planning First Year Design Students Retrospective
Students within the First Year Program at the College of Architecture and Design at Ball State University learn and develop environmental design principles and skills through presented questions and a series of explorations. This exhibit is a celebration of the exemplary responses to these questions throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. Individual projects displayed within the exhibition include: "The Order of Things," "Defining Spaces," "Translations," "(S)P(L)ACE and EVENT," "Folding Space," "Biomimicry," and "Stitching the Urban Fabric of Muncie”.

Faces of the Cheonggyecheon, Christine Johnson (BLA '16)
During the spring semester of 2015, Christine Johnson (BLA '16) conducted an observational photography study about the Cheonggye Canal in Seoul, South Korea, and the people that came to visit from the middle of winter to spring. From that she has produced maps, drawings, photos, and videos that look deep into the history and culture of the Cheonggyecheon and into the experiences of those who visit. She hopes that through this project she can raise awareness about how important these types of landscapes are to people in the form of social, insightful, and pleasant experiences.

Afterhours Art Reels – Phantom of the Paradise

Muncie Downtown Development Partnership, in collaboration with The Fickle Peach, presents After Hours Art Reels following the First Thursday Gallery Walks in June through September. Come enjoy the gallery exhibits from 5-8pm throughout DWNTWN, and join us afterwards at dusk for these great cult and art film classics!

Our final show is: Phantom of the Paradise. Phantom of the Paradise is a 1974 American musical film horror film written and directed by Brian De Palma, and starring Paul Williams, William Finley and Jessica Harper. In the film, a disfigured composer writes his music for a woman he loves so that she will perform his music. However, a record producer betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, The Paradise. Betrayed, the composer dons a new appearance and exacts revenge on the producer.

The story is a loosely adapted mixture of several classic European works: Gaston Leroux's novel The Phantom of the Opera, Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, and Faust by Goethe/Christopher Marlowe.

Initially, the film was a box office failure and received negative reviews, however it earned praise for its music, receiving Academy Award and a Golden Globe nominations. Over the years, the film has received much more positive reviews and has since become a cult classic.

The Ball State University student short film shown prior to this month's movie is "WHOLE" . Film by the Rieth Brothers. This film was the winning short film for the 2015 BSU Frog Baby Film Festival.

Films are projected onto the Mutual Bank wall on Charles Street at dusk. Seating will be available on the Fickle Peach patio area located at 117 E. Charles St. for guests who are 21 and up. Viewers who are not yet 21 can watch the films from the sidewalk surrounding the patio area. A hot dog food cart and beverages will be available.

Life is short, capture it! Born and raised in Delaware County, and a graduate of Ball State University, Lorri Markum has spent most of her life behind a lens. Her professional career began with a love of music and live performance. After landing her first concert photography job photographing Aretha Franklin, and soon after, Sir Elton John, she has spent nearly twenty years photographing the top artists, and legends in music.

Though most of her work is known through her work in the music industry, her true love as a photographer lies in pursuing photojournalism and street photography in black and white. She enjoys capturing moments as they naturally unfold, the common, the forgotten, the subtle, and the bizarre from New York City, to New Orleans.

A collection of Lorri Markum’s photographs will be on display during September 3 from 5–9 p.m. at the Rose Court on East Charles Street. The works are black and white canvas prints of street scenes, and nature, from Indiana to Mississippi, New Orleans to Muscle Shoals. All will be available for purchase.

Bold and Broke

In its second year of pop up shows, DYNAMO will be hosting its seventh show: Bold and Broke in the GearBox: Muncie, the former Cintas building, on First Thursday, March 3, 5-9 PM. More than 20 artists, largely comprised of current and former Ball State students, will be displaying their work. Types of medium represented will be drawing, painting, ceramics, glass, metals, photography, video, and multimedia installation.

DYNAMO is an art collective dedicated to creating traveling pop up art shows based in Muncie, Indiana. The artwork is from a mixture of student and local artists with a variety of media and subject, and a strong interest in learning how to exhibit work professionally. The goal of this group is to promote diversity of art throughout our community, and to familiarize students with the exhibition process.

Space in Motion
Twelve dancers, twelve unique environments. Space in Motion brings together the talents of Ball State University’s architecture and dance students for a one-time performance in downtown Muncie as part of First Thursday Arts Walk on March 3. From 6:00-7:00pm, twelve Ball State dance students will perform, each occupying a unique environment created by one of twelve Ball State architecture students. The performance will take place at GearBox:Muncie, the former Cintas building located at the intersection of Jackson and Madison streets. Admission is free and music will be provided by Department of Theater and Dance musician, Adam Crawley.

The project was organized by Ball State Architecture Professor George Elvin with Dance Professor Susan Koper and IDIA Lab Director John Fillwalk. “Space in Motion promises to be a very unique experience,” Elvin said. "The students are merging design, dance and music in one of Muncie’s most interesting new art spaces. I think anyone with an interest in any of those things will be glad they came.”

The Muncie Arts and Culture Council is thrilled to have been given an early opportunity to help activate the GearBox space while simultaneously facilitating First Thursday events for artists and groups who might otherwise find it difficult to participate in this Downtown Muncie tradition.

At 7:30pm, David Blakely, violin and Rebecca Burkart, harpsichord will perform Sonata No. 6 in G Major by Johann Sebastian Bach at Grace Episcopal Church in Muncie.

Rebecca is a local performer on harpsichord with a degree in Harpsichord Performance from Ball State University and a Ph.D. in Historical Musicology from Florida State University. She was a Finalist in the International Music Prize for Excellence in Performance in 2011.

She taught at North Florida Community College for seven years and now teaches music history and harpsichord lessons and directs the Collegium Musicum at Ball State University.

Radicle Traces

Gordy Fine Art and Framing Company will celebrate First Thursday, March 3, 5-8 pm with an opening reception for Radicle Traces, paintings by Kaylee Dalton. The exhibit will feature several new paintings by the artist who will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend.

Appropriate for March, Dalton’s work is a whimsical interpretation of the garden landscape with a focus on “the ever longed for spring season and its perpetual fascination of new growth.” Bulbs, seeds, and blooms, both above and beneath the soil, have all found a home in her most recent work. Exploiting the rare combination of encaustic wax and water media, Dalton clearly embraces strong textural differences, reflective of the various surfaces often found in nature

Dalton received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Ball State University in 2008. She was the 2006 recipient of the Watercolor Society of Indiana scholarship. While attending Ball State University, she received five painting awards, including three purchase awards. Dalton studied at the University of Miami, Florida for a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. She has shown in over 25 group exhibits including Art Basel Miami. She is a member of the Northern Indiana Artists and recently received the Carolyn Jagodits Memorial Award at their latest exhibition. Locally, Dalton was awarded third place at the Minnetrista Open Space: Art About the Land juried show in 2015.

At 6:15, the artist will speak briefly about her work. Guests are encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the artist as well as her unique pairing of artistic media.

First Floor: Mask Making Workshop at the DOMA

Taking place over the course of two weekends, individuals will look at masks in the collection with artist-teacher Aaron Nicholson and create their own works of art for display on March 3 at the downtown gallery of the BSU College of Architecture and Planning called Muncie Makes Lab. Students will learn how to make a sculpture using an armature, paper-mâché, and found objects.

For an assignment in an architecture class at Ball State University, students explored the role of social and environmental justice art in generating awareness, empathy, and change. Students researched topics that they were passionate about and visually communicated what they want the public to know about these injustices through art making.

“Colby's Zoo of Legendary Creatures” Colby Golden, a graduate student in animation at Ball State University, will have his MFA exhibition on view during April’s First Thursday, with an opening reception to be held April 14th, 4-6pm. His show is a collection of different kinds of sculptural and two-dimensional tactile animations that can be viewed in a physical space. Using Cryptozoology as the primary subject matter, Golden’s aim is to bring to life a supernatural zoo of mysterious creatures—known as cryptids—to his viewers. He uses a variety of different media for his creations, such as copper electro-forming, clay, glass, acrylic, and steel, in order to help convey the idea of each creature to the viewer. “Vibrant Earth” Join Cornerstone Center for Arts for First Thursday on April 7, 2016 for an opening reception and art show featuring the art of Leon Crosby. The show titled “Vibrant Earth” explores the softer side of Crosby’s art style featuring themes and scenes found in nature. He has decided to go back to his art roots with this collection. Using painting techniques he learned throughout his college years, while also maintaining his elegant modern edge.

Each painting in the collection represents an aspect of the vibrant colors, emotions, creatures, and forms present on planet Earth. This multi-media collection combines both traditional painting techniques and modern stylings.

The opening reception will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the Cornerstone Art Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone Center for the Arts. The show will be on display and open to the public throughout the month of April.

Leon, a visual arts instructor at Cornerstone, was born in Toledo, Ohio and started his journey in art at a young age. His biggest inspirations come from Japanese art, American graffiti, and comic book graphics. He has received both formal and informal instruction from the Toledo Museum of Art and the University of Toledo and regularly displays and sells his art throughout the Muncie community. In addition to teaching at Cornerstone, Leon has volunteered his time at Sutton Elementary and has several private lesson students. His passion for art and teaching encourages him to inspire his students to make the world a more beautiful place.

Muncie Makes Lab will host three exhibitions for First Thursday:

“Experimental Watercolor, Carol Burt + East Washington Academy Art Students”: Explorations in watercolor techniques supported by Bell Grant Funding.

“Huggable Architecture: Rachel Dickey with Morganne Walker”: Huggable Architecture is an exhibit produced as part of the Design Innovation Fellowship at Ball State University. It is no mere representation of design research, but rather a demonstration of it. In an effort of design and making, the exhibit interrogates how we might mediate between the quantitative and qualitative aspects of design by drawing on ideas of softness, empathy, warmth, and the body. It takes an opportunistic approach to design research and tries to find the equilibrium between computational control and material volition by bringing together a change of state material with a digitally controlled and automated flexible mold. Securing 1,150 pounds of gypsum cement—one of the most commonly used building materials today—an unconventional approach to its use was derived for freezing geometric variations. The sea of individual soft, dense, and pure casts that result taxonomize the range of curvature achieved through the reusable parametric mold.

“Renderpalooza: Hosted by Ball State’s AIAS Chapter”: Renderpalooza is a collection of student works from the College of Architecture. The exhibit exemplifies a wide range of graphic representations ranging from 3rd year to graduate level work. These representations explore different means and methods to convey architectural visions and ideas. “The Napkin Sketches of Tony Costello”: Rose Court is pleased to exhibit the napkin sketches of Tony Costello during the April Arts Walk. Costello is the Irving Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Architecture at Ball State University and the principal of C+A Costello + Associates, an award-winning architecture firm he founded in 1976. This exhibit is comprised of 70+ ink sketches on cocktail napkins created during a family cruise on the Rhine-Main-Danube Rivers in 2015. It is the second in a series entitled Personal Postcards. Many of the sketches took less than two minutes to create, some as many as ten. The subjects include bridges, industrial buildings, churches, vineyards, riverfront cityscapes, and river lock sequence images. Taken collectively, Costello feels that this collection of sketches, created with the human eye and hand, captures the evocative essence of travel experiences far better than any camera.

YART is a Yard Sale for Art! YART began in Muncie, Indiana with students at Ball State University and continues in several U.S. cities! The Muncie YART is now held Downtown, twice a year, Spring and Fall, on the First Thursday of every May and October. 

The Fall 2016 Muncie YART will be held in conjunction with the 2016 ArtsWalk, in the Old National Financial lot on the corner of Walnut and Charles Streets in Downtown Muncie, Indiana, on Thursday, October 6th, from 5-9pm. 

This community art sale, with a goal of making art affordable and accessible to everyone, brings together artists and art patrons in a casual and unique setting. 

All forms of art are welcome! Art of all kinds, by all kinds of artists! YART encourages interaction between artists and the community, hoping to make art more accessible, especially to those who think they cannot afford to buy art for themselves. To this goal, all YART art will be priced below $40!

Each YART Artist will be present throughout YART to meet the public, discuss their art, handle sales personally, and some artists will be making art LIVE at YART!

83rd ANNUAL STUDENT ART SHOW: The School of Art Atrium Gallery will have extended hours until 8:00 PM on First Thursday for a viewing of the 83rd Annual Student Art Show.

This annual exhibition had its genesis in 1935. It showcases a representation of student artwork from the past year that has been selected by a professional juror. This year’s juror is Harris Deller, Professor of Art-Emeritus, Ceramics, who taught for 35 years at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. His work has been featured in more than 100 group exhibitions, and in over 15 solo exhibitions in museums and galleries throughout the United States as well as in Asia and Europe. Deller’s work is represented in over 25 major collections, and he has received numerous honors including having his work featured in several publications.

The show runs from Thursday, February 22 to Tuesday, March 13, 2018 with an Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony on Saturday, February 24, 6-8:00 PM with cash awards totaling up to $2600.

The Atrium Gallery is located adjacent to the Atrium Foodcourt on the First Floor of the Art & Journalism Building. Atrium Gallery hours are Monday - Friday 9:00 am - 4:00 pm and Saturdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. Closed Sundays and all Ball State breaks and holidays.

Book Arts Collaborative will be displaying vintage posters from the Tribune Showprint library of historical work. On the wall right outside our shop, we'll be displaying work by English students who have visited Book Arts Collaborative this semester. This was funded by a Dean's Immersive Learning Grant, and the exhibit is part of that Immersive Project's public presentation of what the students learned.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts and PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union Young Artist Exhibition Reception: Cornerstone Center for the Arts, in partnership with PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union, will host the Young Artist Exhibition on Thursday, March 1 for school-age children in Delaware County. The show will feature the artwork of students in kindergarten through twelfth grades who reside in or attend school in Delaware County. The public reception on March 1 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. will take place in the Colonnade Room at Cornerstone Center for the Arts in conjunction with First Thursday with awards being announced at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This is the second year for the show which will feature both 2D and 3D artwork submitted by hundreds of local students. Entries will be placed into four grade categories: kindergarten-second, third-fifth, sixth-eighth, and ninth-twelfth. Submissions will be accepted at Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ second floor information desk until Friday, February 23. Teachers may submit up to 10 pieces of work or students may submit up to three of their own pieces with assistance from a parent or guardian. Prize packages, including cash awards, will be awarded for first, second, third, and honorable mentions in each category. A panel of community judges will select winners prior to the public reception.

Winning artwork will be on display at Cornerstone Center for the Arts during the month of April. The opening reception for the winners showcase will be held on Thursday, April 5 in which all winners are invited to attend and share their work with the public. Additionally, winning artwork may be displayed at PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union’s three locations.

Debra Gindhart is presenting her outspoken commentary and through her visual art. “I am a spoken word artist as well, so it has been my voice and poetry flowing through the paint—be it aerosol, acrylics, assemblage or otherwise—it’s tactile and telling,” says Gindhart. Her work will tell the story of a young girl-artist-woman, giving voice to such issues as childhood sexual abuse/the degradation of women and girls, divorce, cancer—it’s funding, research and cure, chemical effects on the planet, and hunger, all told through vibrant colors sprinkled with spray art.

Debra Gindhart is always outspoken and creative, she’s poured her energy, over the years, into various projects, both personal and community-wide. She’s practiced her love of spoken-word poetry at various First Thursday & Poetry Nights, her chapbook "My Cemetery Plot is Paid For" is available as well.

A new acrylic series will debut March 1st, JACKSON-ESQUE is vibrational as the textures flow. Her Green Glam Studio line of environmentally friendly jewelry is part of her exhibit at Madjax Muncie. 

“I believe that life passes from our art. We evolved with age and, hence, our style and media evolve. My art is storytelling using strokes and spray,” says Debra Gindhart. “My art has been fiber and paint and public. This show reflects the information gathered in my different age progressions. Art is in my spirit, resounding from my soul.”

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company to present an exhibition of paintings and sculpture by artist Kevin Campbell, Thursday March 1, 5 – 8 pm.   

Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will open the exhibition Pieces of Infinity with paintings and sculpture by artist Kevin Campbell, Thursday March 1, 5 – 8 pm.    The exhibit will be anchored by his drawing of tiny interlocking puzzle pieces which is well over 100 square feet.  The drawing is a map that guides his Puzzle Project and will be shown to the public for the first time to offer viewers a direct understanding of the artist’s motivation.  Throughout the evening, Mr. Campbell will be on hand to engage with viewers and answer questions. At 6:15 he will speak briefly about his work.  Light refreshments will be served and the public is invited to attend. 

All of the works in the show are expressions of the interconnectedness of the natural world.  Each individual piece is “inherently part of something larger than itself,” says Campbell speaking about the idea that has driven his art for decades.  The Puzzle Project is a work of art that has no edge and so it “can be added onto – can ‘grow’ indefinitely.  As it grows, pieces and groups of pieces are separated and treated as individual works of art.”  These pieces and groups of pieces will be hung and for sale in the Gordy gallery.  Those who own a piece of the Puzzle Project will forever have a place in the larger composition. 

“Works of art are often referred to as ‘pieces of art,’” says Gordy owner Carl Schafer.  “For Kevin Campbell this is literally true.  He is making only one work of art that has many pieces.  The title of the show, Pieces of Infinity refers to the fact that Campbell has placed no boundaries on his single work of art.  It can continue forever and each piece will always have its place.”

“Blue and Red States (of Mind)”:  Jeff Brackett is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Ball State. This display of his acrylic ink and paint in blue, red, and black, blends precision and ambiguity, disrupting uniformity and conformity in subtle – and not-so-subtle – ways. His emphasis on patterns and repetition of colors, columns, and rows invites viewers to look for details, and to be suspicious of stereotypes that oversimplify and distort diverse perspectives. He has a different series of black-ink line drawings, “Power Lines,” on display at The Cup (March-April).

Muncie Makes Lab presents a collection of work by architecture students from Ball State’s College of Architecture and Planning. The work – including designs by students in Professor Joshua Coggeshall’s ARCH598 furniture elective and Professor Kristin Barry’s ARCH329 architectural history and theory course – covers a wide range of design projects. Professor Coggeshall’s project, “Simple Chairs,” challenges students to research and build classic simple wood chairs. Professor Kristin Barry’s project, “Monument to a Movement,” allows students to create a speculative design for a monument that encompasses a theory behind a certain architectural movement.

“Sonder” at PlySpace: Muncie Arts and Culture Council is pleased to celebrate First Thursday, March 1, 2018 with an opening and closing reception for Sonder, an art exhibition from 5:00 - 9:00 PM at PlySpace, the soon-to-be new home for MACC located at 608 East Main Street in downtown Muncie. Produced in partnership with a Ball State University School of Art immersive learning course, the exhibition of student work gets its name from John Koenig, the creator of the “Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows.” “Sonder” is a term coined by Keonig to describe the realization that each random passerby lives a life as vivid and complex as your own and that an epic story is continually unfolding invisibly around you. In this case, the exhibition Sonder explores and celebrates the inner worlds, passions, and inquiries of Ball State University students from varying formal disciplines and personal backgrounds.

In addition to producing the individual works of art, the students are also responsible for designing, curating, and installing the exhibition. Participating artists include: Alexis Brooks, Danielle Campbell, Mallory Creekmur, Veronica Debone, Michael Dorsey, Mikey Higgins, Megan Lange, James Lupkin, Rowan Mayo, Summer Moore, and Megan Sutton. The selected artworks represent a variety of 2D and 3D media including glass, ink and charcoal drawings, video, and ceramics. The artists will be present throughout the evening and available to answer questions and share insights about the program and individual works with guests.

Muncie Arts and Culture Council welcomes the public to this one-night-only First Thursday event in downtown Muncie. Parking is available in the lot immediately adjacent to the building. Local artist and dj Jannell Summers and artist Karl Erickson will be hanging a show of mixed media experiments for the month of March. On Thursday, March 1st, starting at 9pm, they will take over a corner of Savage's game room to do live, blind-gesture drawings of patrons. For a small donation, patrons will learn to quickly create portraits using this method by drawing one of the artists (no skill required). Each patron, in return, will get a portrait of themselves by either Jannell or Karl. Jannell and Karl will also be showcasing some various video art experiments and programming on the main television throughout the evening. Where the Wild Things Are, Featuring the Art of Mary Beth Reinhard:
Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, February 6 for the opening reception of Where the Wild Things Are featuring the photography of Mary Beth Reinhard. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with February’s First Thursday events.

Where the Wild Things Are, is a collection of North American animals found in their natural environment. Giving the animals the respect they deserve allows Reinhard to get close enough to develop a relationship with each animal which is often displayed in her images. From the vulnerability of the Deer, wisdom of the Raven, and rugged majesty of the Moose, it’s almost impossible to look at these images without feeling a connection to the featured creature. 

Every animal on our wild planet has its own distinct personality. The objective of Reinhard’s photography is to capture the personality of each animal as observed in the Wild. With a deep respect for wildlife, she often sits in awe of the many creatures which surround us. 

Mary Beth Reinhard, an Indiana native, has had a passion for the great outdoors and our animal friends from an early age. An adventurer at heart, Mary Beth enjoys scuba diving, snorkeling, sky diving, backpacking our National Parks, and many other outdoor pursuits. Mary Beth is a graduate of Ball State University with Master’s Degrees in Clinical Mental Health and Rehabilitation Counseling. She is a Certified Naturalist and enjoys studying our vast natural environment and its inhabitants. She resides in a log cabin in the woods just outside of Muncie, and is currently employed as a Mental Health Therapist in Private Practice. She also teaches Yoga and various dance classes at Cornerstone Center for the Arts.

Where the Wild Things Are will be on display and open to the public in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery throughout the month of February.

Join Cornerstone Center for the Arts on Thursday, March 5 for the opening reception of A Never-Ending Quest featuring the art of Shannon Mehaffey. The reception will take place in the Judith Barnes Memorial Gallery on the second floor of Cornerstone from 5 to 7 p.m. in conjunction with March’s First Thursday events.

This collection of new mixed-media artworks by artist Shannon Mehaffey is a culmination of new processes and themes the artist has discovered through experimentation, meditation, and dedication to the study of art. Inspired by the fantastical landscapes, items, and stories found within the digital realm of video game franchises such as “Skyrim,” “Death Stranding,” and “Fallout.”  The artist has dedicated her artistic practice to exploring new art mediums and processes. Born out of the artist's long lost love of analog darkroom photography, this body of work is about learning to control the alchemy of the papers and inks using solvents, moving ink around the page in a totally uncontrolled manner, and finding order within the chaos.

Shannon Mehaffey is a Visual Artist living in Muncie, Indiana. She earned her BFA in Photography in Fine Arts at Ball State University in 2010, she currently teaches Watercolors, Drawing, Landscape Painting, and Mixed Media at Cornerstone Center for the Arts. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her partner, her two dogs, binging Netflix, and playing video games.

Cornerstone Center for the Arts, in partnership with PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union, will host the Young Artist Exhibition on Thursday, March 5th for school-age children in Delaware County. The show will feature the artwork of students in kindergarten through twelfth grades who reside in or attend school in Delaware County. The public reception on March 5th from 5:30 to 7:30p.m. will take place in the Colonnade Room at Cornerstone Center for the Arts with awards being announced at 6:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

This is the fourth year for the show which will feature both 2D and 3D artwork submitted by hundreds of local students. Entries will be placed into six categories: kindergarten-second, third- fifth, sixth-eighth 2D, sixth-eighth 3D, ninth-twelfth 2D, and ninth-twelfth 3D. Submissions will be accepted at Cornerstone Center for the Arts’ second floor information desk from Wednesday, February 12 through Friday, February 21. Teachers may submit up to 10 pieces of work or students may submit up to three of their own pieces with assistance from a parent or guardian. Prize packages, including cash awards, will be awarded for first, second, third, and honorable mentions in each category. A panel of community judges will select winners prior to the public reception.

Winning artwork will be on display at Cornerstone Center for the Arts during the month of April. The opening reception for the winners showcase will be held on Thursday, April 2 in which all winners are invited to attend and share their work with the public. Additionally, winning artwork may be displayed at PrimeTrust Federal Credit Union’s three locations.

The Fickle Peach (21+)

Madeline Douglass will show her work at The Fickle Peach. Madeline grew up in Muncie, Indiana, and then attended university at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia. She majored in screenwriting, but held close to her original love of drawing.

This collection is a few of her studies of human anatomy. They are largely mixed media – including conte crayon, charcoal, watercolor, colored pencil, and ink.

In these pieces, Madeline observed and attempted to capture the grace and fluidity of the human form. She sat for several hours, just about every Friday and Saturday, for three years, staring at naked people, doing her damnedest to replicate every little nook and cranny. She was forced to squint at these poor models as her professors tried to get her to see shadow shapes and highlights. Madeline had her own personal style of drawing ripped apart and rebuilt to someone else’s standards.

“A Little Bit OM and A Lot Googly Eyes” is local artist Debra Gindhart’s March First Thursday gallery walk show. Up cycled jewelry from her Green Glam Studio collection includes Om Necklaces and Googly Eyed wearable art. Assemblage, collage, and found objects techniques creating humorous wall art. Gindhart FiberART hand knitted infinity scarves featured as well. Come for wearable art and fun contemporary artwork. As the Muncie Fieldhouse looks forward to hosting the 2020 Basketball Sectionals in March, Gordy Fine Art & Framing Company will continue the exhibition Our House: Muncie Fieldhouse, a community gathering place, Thursday March 5, 5-8 pm. Images are drawn from the Ball State University’s Archives and Special Collections, a department of Ball State University Libraries. Additional material is contributed by Muncie Public Library.   Selected images include photographs and architectural plans that celebrate the historical importance of the Fieldhouse as a sports arena and a community gathering place for car shows, union meetings, circus events, and concerts. 

Copies of images will be sold to benefit the Muncie Community Schools efforts to preserve the Muncie Fieldhouse and its history. Light refreshments will be served with comments at 6:15, and the public is invited to attend. The show will be up and images for sale through the end of March.

Indianapolis artist and Ball State graduate, Neal Soley, presents Egocentric: A Pop Up Show. Soley’s company, The Tulip Factory, offers an array of products based upon his distinct style that is best described as an expression of his individuality.  Egocentric features over 25 works based on The Tulip Factory’s logo, including a photo collaboration with Las Vegas based photographer, Michael Hurley. Through the manipulation of TTF’s logo, Egocentric offers works that are a pursuit of self through the exploration of media. All works are available for purchase.  Join the artist for light refreshments at this one-night event, happening March 5 during First Thursday events on the second floor of the Madjax Muncie building at 514 E Jackson Street from 5-8 pm.

“In the Footsteps of Our Ancestors” is the first in a series of exhibitions by Leslie Price to examine the roots of culture and our relation to the past. The “Celtic Roots” show features images of Scotland- from where my ancestors originated- before they migrated to Ireland. Perhaps yours did too. Here you will get a chance to walk the ancient passageways of far off castles, explore a rare class of Neolithic henge monument, and meander down the street that inspired J.K. Rowling’s Diagon Alley. Come and follow in the footsteps of our ancestors- through the winding green hills and lush river valleys, past the castle gate and up the spiral staircase cut out of solid stone. Adventure awaits! Come celebrate St. Patrick’s Day early with Leslie and the nice folks at the Muncie Map Company. You might even make some new friends. 

Leslie Price is an independent Historic Preservation Specialist in Muncie, Indiana. She has a Master of Science in Historic Preservation from Ball State University with minors in urban planning and energy studies, and an Associate of Applied Science in hands-on building preservation from Belmont Technical College. Leslie is a painter; writer, activist, photographer and craftsman. She has a unique vision of the evolution of culture, which is reflected in the texture, details and composition of her images.  Leslie’s dedication to arts and the environment is evident in her pursuit of the perfect perspective. This is her fourth time participating in First Thursday

INTRO TO DESIGN

You may not have noticed it before, but the spaces that we live, work, learn, and play in have all be designed by someone. Sure, some have been more intentional and certain details are often afforded more attention, money, and effort, but, nevertheless, decisions have been made. Sometimes the decisions were even made with you in mind!

Join faculty and students from the Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning to explore the processes designers use to shape the world around us. This is part one of a two-part workshop series. This introduction will provide you with foundational skills that you will practice and exercise before our second workshop’s showcase event.

This workshop is recommended for 9th-12th grade students with an interest in design, engineering, and/or the built environment.

All of our workshops and classes are led by professional makers, artists, entrepreneurs, educators and community partners. We strive to provide high-quality and unique learning experiences. Registration will close up to 72 hours prior to the start of the event to provide time for instructors to prepare.
