About

Under the direction of Andrew Crow and Kerry Glann, the Ball State Choirs present a series of concerts each year featuring a wide range of music from around the world and across the centuries.

The Ball State University Chamber Choir is the university’s most prestigious concert choir, typically comprising 32 singers: mostly upper-level music majors and graduate students. The Concert Choir is a select ensemble open to students of all disciplines by audition.

Program

The program is themed around nature and finding hope, peace, and joy. The concert will feature several selections of South African music as a nod to the November concert from guest artists Soweto Gospel Choir.

Chamber Choir

Featuring composers Jake Runestad and Zanaida Stewart Robles. Chamber Choir will also perform a student composition called “The Glade” by Theodore Hicks, who is completing his doctoral studies this semester!

Concert Choir

Music by Ola Gjielo, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (honoring the 500th anniversary of his birth), Felix Mendelssohn, Jake Runestad, Melissa Dunphy, and Thabo Matshego.

Palestrina’s “Sicut cervus” and Mendelssohn’s “Wie der Hirsch schreit” form a coupling as settings of the same Psalm text (Ps 42, Like as the hart desireth the waterbrook…) in different languages and composed across a time span of roughly 250 years.

The Melissa Dunphy piece “I Took a Walk with Joy” featuring poetry by alum Mark A. Boyle.

Connecting to the campus visit of the Soweto Gospel Choir in November, Concert Choir will present Matshego’s “Ukholo lwami,” an arrangement of two traditional South African gospel songs.

The University Choral Union is a large and lively mixed choir comprised of approximately 100 students that performs a variety of literature, from multicultural pieces to show tunes. The Cardinal Chorus is a tenor-bass ensemble and Vox Anima is a treble-voice ensemble.

About

The Faculty Artist Series features School of Music faculty sharing their talent and passion for music with the campus and community. 

Anna Vayman is associate professor of violin at Ball State University and a member of American Piano Trio. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Anna Vayman made her solo debut at the age of eleven with Omsk Symphony Orchestra in Russia. Since then she has been a soloist with various major orchestras. Highlights of her career include solo performances under the baton of leading conductors such as Valery Gergiev, Yury Temirkanov, and Gianandrea Noseda. An active recitalist and chamber musician, Ms. Vayman has appeared on numerous international music festivals including International Music Festival in Lucca, Italy; Musical Spring Festival in St. Petersburg, Russia; Mikkele International Music Festival in Finland; Red Sea International Music Festival in Israel; and Rotterdam Philharmonic Festival, Netherlands.

Pianist Michael Seregow leads a vibrant and diverse career that brings music to life in a variety of forms. As an acclaimed soloist, chamber musician, dedicated educator, and recording artist, his journey has taken him to cities and stages across the United States, Latin America, and Europe.

The Barefoot Movement integrates bluegrass, blues, folk, rock, country and pop into music that’s delightfully fresh. Shows feature original songs and reimagined cover tunes with tight three-part harmonies and hot instrumentals.

Since 2011, progressive acoustic band The Barefoot Movement has been recording and touring internationally, winning the 2014 IBMA momentum award, and releasing three studio albums as well as a live album, a holiday album, two EP’s, and a covers collection.  They’ve been a tight knit group of four, with a loyal fan base in the bluegrass world.  But when the pandemic brought their momentum to a halt, the four-piece ensemble began to fragment, with bandmates moving in different directions during the forced hiatus.

6 Guitars is a pitch perfect blend of music, comedy, and theater. Just 1 performer portrays 6 guitar-playing characters each representing their own style of music:

As each character shares the anecdotes and songs that define their relationship to music, the audience is treated to breathtaking musicianship, beautiful storytelling, and top-notch comedy. Audience interaction and improvised songs tailors each performance to any given crowd.

Just a spontaneous jam session at Nashville’s Station Inn between a few friends. All women, all seasoned players out to make a little noise on a weeknight. What happened next was alchemy: the room lit up, the crowd roared and by the time the night was over, something had shifted. The landscape of bluegrass, and the women who played it, would never be the same.

A GRAMMY-nominated, IBMA-sweeping, Grand Ole Opry-starring force. But for all the stages they played and accolades they earned, they were still often reduced to a single line: all-female bluegrass band. It was true, yet reductive. Because Sister Sadie was never about labels. They were about the music. They are about the music. The stories. The fire. Since forming in New York City in 1995 they have been a galvanizing element in the Irish music scene – a lightening rod of talent and inspiration that set new standards for musicianship, repertoire, and intensity. Duende Libre is an award-winning jazz trio whose original music combines jazz virtuosity with roots rhythms from Cuba, Brazil, and West Africa into a “strikingly authentic blend.” Each having apprenticed with direct descendants and master musicians of these traditions, they consider themselves disciples of their teachers. The result: A euphoric new jazz that honors its historical roots, pushing open the boundaries of genre to invoke a powerful sonic freedom.

Comprising core members Alex Chadsey (bandleader and keys), Jeff Busch (percussion), and Farko Dosumov (bass), Duende Libre is collectively influenced by the trio’s direct connections with master musicians including Clinton Fearon, Dudley Nesbitt, Dave Hassel, Jesse Bannister, Chucho Valdés, Carlos Santana, Martha Gonzalez, Quetzal Flores, and Joe Santiago.
