  • Ball State Photovoice Exhibition 5pm to 7pm @ Ivy Tech Patterson Building 3rd floor

Dr. Amanda O. Latz, Associate Professor of Adult, Higher, and Community Education, and the graduate students in the EDCC 641 course “Community Colleges and Diversity” invite you to attend “Teaching Students and Telling Stories,” a participatory action research photovoice exhibition to be held on Thursday, May 3, 2018 from 5-7pm at Ivy Tech Community College’s Patterson Building, third floor ballroom.

The photovoice exhibition is the culmination of a research project carried out by 19 graduate students in the EDCC 641 course who worked with approximately 20 faculty members at Ivy Tech Community College. Through a process of providing 20 Ivy Tech faculty members with disposable cameras to record aspects of their teaching lives, students developed a strong sense of what it is like to be a community college faculty member at the Muncie campus of Ivy Tech. Students talked with the faculty about their photos and analyzed conversations to gain an understanding about faculty experiences.

The EDCC 641 class, in collaboration with Ivy Tech, has organized the photovoice exhibition as a way to showcase this immersive learning project. The exhibition will include the instructors’ photos and serve as an interactive space for dialogue and reflection. Refreshments will be served. All Muncie, Ivy Tech Community College, and Ball State University community members are welcome to attend and engage those who were involved in this project at this event. For more information about the EDCC 641 photovoice project, please contact Dr. Amanda O. Latz at aolatz@bsu.edu.

Kaiti Sullivan photographed these families in attempt to reveal their arduous lifestyles and moments of connection.

The artist notes: I have spent the past 30 years working in the jewelry business in local stores. I spent the last twelve years at Ashcraft Jewelers before they closed in June. I opened my own business this past October hoping to provide my clients with the same customer service, and style they had come to expect from me. I am now a private jeweler who works with customers on a personal level. I enjoy doing special community events, as well as pop up shops within a local business.  I offer a collection of unique jewelry from different designers. I carry a large collection of affordable jewelry that would be perfect for any special occasion as well as a self purchase. Working with designers like Frederic Duclos who enjoys working with different textures and finishes allows me to have collections that are both stylish and well made. The 2018 Spring Term PlySpace Open Studios invite the public to Madjax for Brink of Summer ArtsWalk in Downtown Muncie! Open Studios offer an opportunity to learn more about our current residents and their personal and collaborative residency projects. Ask questions about their artwork, their creative processes, and upcoming events and activities once they leave PlySpace.

Spring 2018 Residents: Melissa Joy Livermore, Nick Witten, and Danielle Graves

Melissa Joy Livermore has recently returned to Indiana from extended visits abroad where she was reminded of the importance of creating space for others to express themselves as she tried to hold conversations in China and France, constructing sentences word by word. During her time at PlySpace she has been researching linguistics and looking for connections between language learning and interpersonal communication. She will share video work that documents a computer's attempt to provide thought for thought translation of lines from the Tower of Babel in google translate.

Nick Witten and Danielle Joy Graves work collaboratively with themes of character appropriation, branding, and other elements from pop culture and entertainment— arranging, distorting, and perversing these elements to create absurd alternate versions of reality. Their time at PlySpace will result in the exhibition of new work at Kime Contemporary in Indianapolis. Their open studio event will preview the collaborative process for this new body of work.

PlySpace is a program of the Muncie Arts and Culture Council in partnership with the City of Muncie, Ball State University School of Art, and Sustainable Muncie Corporation. PlySpace is generously supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
